Dragons, dragons, dragons! I have always liked both Khans of Tarkir and Dragons of Tarkir, and I will defend the latter even more now: the previews for the sequel have prompted a few people to admit that they liked the dragonless version because they read it as a Warhammer Fantasy-style grimdark miseryfest. Tarkir has so much more to offer than that, not least our recent conversations about how many game-changing cards it brought to Magic. In that light, it’s fitting that we’re starting Tarkir: Dragonstorm season with an efficient flying green dragon – not a phrase I get many chances to write. As far as abilities go, gaining life is not always the most-used ability in competitive constructed, though it’s far from useless; it does add up against aggressive decks, and there are good candidates  for support up and down the mana curve.

Of course, I haven’t yet mentioned the omen card, part of our first official variant on the adventure mechanic. I’m a little surprised it took us this long to get one, but more importantly, it helps you take full advantage of the rare opportunity that is an efficient flying green dragon. You might rue the times when the Regent is the only dragon – or one of a few – in your deck, as it might feel bad when you shuffle the omen into your deck and then miss out on the big end of the ramp deck. Still, Claim Territory is card advantage of a familiar green type, and overall, the good parts of playing with this card will outweigh the negatives.

Dragons are suitably ominous, and the new omen mechanic is an interesting take on the expensive creature type. After casting the omen half of a spell, it returns to your library to make things happen later. It’s not the same as an adventure, per se, but it does have similar connective tissue.

Bloomvine Regent is very much a card carried by versatility, though it does not hurt that the first half is effectively a limited Cultivate (or Kodama’s Reach). You only can grab Forests, but it does have the upshot of being a mostly green-light demand. Still, this does chain well into going to five mana on turn four.

As for Bloomvine Regent, it’s decent. It’s not special, but adding an extra three life onto each Dragon spell adds up, and this also is a fairly rare green flying creature. Green famously gets fewer and worse flying creatures, and while this won’t tear up Standard, it’s a good value creature who can hold the line and swoop upon the populace.
