Technically, Body Snatcher is both reanimation setup and a reanimation payoff in one card – you don’t get that often at all. The tradeoff is that it takes both time (usually) and some careful planning, but when it works, it works just as well as anything else. The tradeoffs mean it may be better when it’s one of a number of such spells, though it can provide a little insurance in limited games. It’s also decent with flicker effects, provided you have more things in your hand to discard; and it doesn’t have to return something you discarded with it, which is convenient.

Multiplayer: 3
Commander [EDH]: 3

Body Snatcher is a rather interesting take on a reanimation spell; you get something back when it dies, but it will cost you on the way in. Still, you can use it to set up your later reanimation target, and there are plenty of fun tricks you can do with sacrificing it as soon as it hits play. As a body, it’s resolutely underwhelming as a result of no really relevant creature types and bad stats…which probably explains why it wants to snatch things. It’s a particularly subtle card that can play well into black’s toolbox, and while it’s not likely to ever break through in Legacy, it’s a fun little card for more casual tables.

Constructed: 1.5 (too clunky to really make work)
Casual: 4
Limited: 2.5 (contingent on you having creatures worth getting back, which isn’t a guarantee)
Multiplayer: 3
Commander [EDH]: 3.5
