What’s up, you guys?! It’s Tuesday in our Grade 1,
7000 day, and today, we have…
Desert Gunner, Shiden
Power: 9000
Grade 2
Clan: Narukami
Race: Human
[AUTO]:When this unit is placed on (VC) or (RC), if you
have a «Narukami»
vanguard, choose one of your opponent's rear-guards, and
that unit cannot intercept until end of turn.
When I saw
that we were reviewing this card, I had to do a double
take because it was the oddest and most random of picks
to have as a COTD especially for this week. I
really was thinking that we were talking about Desert
Gunner, Raien (who is actually pretty damn good and
would personally give it a 4/5 for it’s respective
clan), but when I clicked the link, it showed this Grade
2, mediocre, waste of a RRR spot of a card. The
fact that this is only 9000 power is just alright and is
normally backed by a extremely good skill (like Viviane
for Gold Paladins, Berserk Dragon for Kagero or Deadly
Spirit for Granblue…yes I went that far). However,
Shiden’s skill just leaves me sitting here thinking,
“Why?” I mean, it’s skill is alright in a mid-late
game situation, but even then, it’s still just leaving
me sitting here scratching my head on what else it can
do…but that’s it. Now, before people start blowing
up my YouTube emails saying “But it’s 9000 power!
It can Intercept!”, so do/can all of the other
previously mentioned cards and they are still being used
to this day in their respective decks…even Deadly
Spirit. Shiden is practically an afterthought, and
that will be solidified once the rest of the
non-Eradicator support comes out and makes this card
obsolete.
Rating: 2/5…and that’s being nice.
Next time: Fluttershy’s sister…maybe?

Desert Gunner Shiden
One of two rear guard stunners of Narukami, Shiden is
the grade 2. When Shiden hits the board, you can select
one rear guard on your opponent’s side, and it can’t
intercept during that turn. He has a standard 9k power
for a grade 2, which doesn’t distinguish him very much,
so let us consider him by his effect alone. First of
all, freezing a unit for a turn is not all that useful,
especially in Narukami. In general, stopping something
from intercepting is not as good as outright retiring
it. In that respect, Dragonic Deathscythe has this guy
outgunned. Additionally, intercepting doesn’t become an
issue until you’ve ridden to grade 3, which, in Narukami,
will ideally be Vermillion. Vermillion stops intercepts,
and most likely retires them at the same time, so what
was the point of dropping that Shiden that turn? And
what if there are no units that can intercept at all?
These facts taken together, Shiden becomes a very
situational card, overshadowed by an arsenal of more
potent Narukami grade 2s.
Rating: 2/5 – Occasionally useful, but there are better
grade 2s. |

I could have sworn this was supposed to be about Raien... but okay,
I'll roll with it. o-o
Desert Gunner Shiden is a fairly underrated and
underplayed card. It's not hard to see why when you look
at the other Grade 2 options Narukami have at their
disposal - solid 10K vanilla, solid 11K attacker, a
Berserk Dragon clone, and a much appreciated unflipper.
They're also much easier to come by, clocking in at
sensible rarities. How on earth this ever made RRR
status is beyond me.
Regardless, Shiden locks an intercept on the turn he
comes down. This can be a strong play in the mid game,
as it prevents an opponent from scaling their field into
something better as easily as they'd normally be able to
be. It's all the more effective when you catch an
8-or-9K Grade 2 without a booster (especial intercepts
in particular) since their ability to fire back at you
will be severely limited for a turn. And by the time
their unit is freed up? Invalidated by a Vermillion
Thunderbolt.
...or such is the concept, but unfortunately Shiden
rarely sees play even as tech, much less accomplishes
incredible things. The future isn't looking good for
him, either, as new contenders for Grade 2 slots
continue to appear. 2/5 |
