Coalition Victory may look a little ponderous and fidgety, but it was also one in a number of alternate-win cards that we got around the turn of the century, and it’s had quite a lot of fans down the years. As early as Invasion‘s release, people tried to make it work in kitchen table decks, but it was always quite fragile. They decided quite fast that the best way to use it was to get one creature that was all five colors . . . and, serendipitously, there was one in Apocalypse, the famous and mysterious Cromat. More creatures in that vein came in time, and as such, Coalition Victory has remained a niche card seeing occasional use, though it’s hampered by being banned in the most popular non-tournament format. I still think that’s kind of odd, though to be fair, Commander’s slower and longer games against potentially inconsistent decks would make it easier to assemble its requirements without being disrupted.

Coalition Victory is banned in Commander.
An eight mana spell to try and win the game on the spot is always an interesting prospect, and it has gotten easier to meet the conditions for victory with Coalition Victory; by my count, you should be able to get away with three cards (a five-color creature, a tri-typed land, and a dual-typed land), and it looks better if you can cheat on Coalition Victory’s mana cost. But this is hardly a world-beater, and it’s rarely been more than a curio, thanks to its steep mana cost and its vulnerability. Remember: you can cast the spell whenever, but you only win if you meet the condition as the spell resolves, and most decks can answer at least one of the critical permanents you need to prevail then and there. It’s long been a casual fan favorite, but this is not a particularly efficacious way to win the game. It’s cute, but cute oft only goes so far.

Limited: 1.5 (the two Limited outings this has seen are Time Spiral and Invasion; there’s no way that I immediately know of in those sets/blocks to cheat on the land types)

Commander [EDH]: N/A (probably a 3.5 or so; it can win out of nowhere and is worth throwing into a five-color shell as a “just because” card, but it would be suboptimal as an actual avenue to victory on a reliable basis)
