This is a condensed version of my FAQ about RAM for those that want the bottom line without being overwhelmed with information.
- RAM can only make your computer as fast as your CPU.
- Having a lot of RAM does not make up for an mediocre CPU.
- 8 GB RAM is recommended for most laptops and desktops.
- 8 GB is perfectly fine for 99% of games (16 isn’t needed).
- 16-32 GB can be helpful for 4K video/photo editing and 3D modeling.
- DDR4 motherboards need DDR4 RAM.
- Faster RAM offers marginal benefit (with some exception to Ryzen).
- All RAM will run as fast as the slowest RAM stick.
- Using 3 sticks of RAM is not optimal. Use 2 or 4.
- Preferably, all sticks should be same size, speed and brand.
- Any reputable company is fine. Corsair, G. Skill, Crucial are good.
- Install RAM in the 2nd and 4th slot preferably.
- Laptop and desktop RAM are not interchangeable.
- Don’t buy more RAM than you need when its expensive.
