Cromat is pretty much a five-color Morphling – hard to kill, hard to block, hard to fight around, hard to stop in almost any way as long as its controller has mana. Five colors did, sadly, hold it back a little from the same level of greatness in constructed, and unlike some five-color creatures that became casual staples later on, you still need multiple colors of mana to take advantage of its abilities. But modern casual is not like old Standard, much less Invasion limited with fewer mana fixing cards than you’d expect – Cromat is much easier to get online in open settings these days, and can ruin anyone’s day if they’re expecting to play the combat game. I’d go so far as to say that it’s underrated in the context of present-day casual Magic.

Constructed: 2
Casual: 4.5
Limited: 3.5 (again, mana fixing is harder here than it looks, but splashing for its mana cost when you can use two or so of its abilities is doable)
Multiplayer: 4
Commander [EDH]: 4

Five colors, five abilities. Cromat is an interesting creature in that it has a lot of things it can do. And while it’s a pretty mana-hungry sort of creature, it can become a very pressing threat in short order; if you cast this fairly, you should be able to have the mana to use three of the five abilities on the next turn cycle (on its own), and when one of those is evasion and another is regeneration, that’s pretty good. Cromat is a sort of self-sustaining threat that can win a game by itself and a bunch of lands…

…but, to be fair, Cromat is a very “fair” creature. It’s a very mana-hungry creature who needs time to roll, and it also demands a lot of support to come out in a timely fashion. A resolved Cromat does need to be dealt with, but there will often be a “shields down” moment for even the most enterprising players.

Constructed: 2 (too “fair” for Legacy, and not useful in an unfair capacity)
Casual: 4.5
Limited: 4 (extremely powerful if you can cast it, which isn’t a guarantee in Invasion)
Multiplayer: 3
Commander [EDH]: 3.5
