Dark Magical Circle
– #DUPO-EN051

When this card is activated: Look at the top 3 cards of your Deck, then you can reveal 1 “Dark Magician” or 1 Spell/Trap that specifically lists the card “Dark Magician” in its text, among them, and add it to your hand, also place the remaining cards on top of your Deck in any order. If “Dark Magician” is Normal or Special Summoned to your field (except during the Damage Step): You can target 1 card your opponent controls; banish it. You can only use each effect of “Dark Magical Circle” once per turn.

Throwback Thursday isn’t Dark Magician because that’s always a good go-to for special reviews on the site, so I’ll look at a nice Dark Magician support piece, probably the most important one, Dark Magical Circle.

DMC is a Continuous Spell that upon activation lets you look at the top 3 cards of your deck and you can reveal a Dark Magician or a Spell/Trap that specifically lists Dark Magician in the text and add it to your hand if there was one among the three cards, either way the cards you looked at that didn’t go to your hand go back to the top of the deck in any order. This can’t get The Eye of Timaeus because it says Dark Magician monster because Dark Magician Girl exists and she should be included with Timaeus as well.. That doesn’t hurt this card at all because you can get so many good cards like Magician’s Navigation, Eternal Soul, another Dark Magical Circle, Chaos Form, there’s several options to choose from. You can also get the Dark Magician himself as mentioned, which he normally isn’t difficult to get to, but you might want him if you got Magician’s Navigation. It can’t get Magician’s Rod if you reveal it since it’s a monster, which is fine as well since that might start to be too good. If Dark Magician is Normal or Special Summoned, you can target a card your opponent controls and banish it. Banishing removal is great removal, and Dark Magician could use it, and this is easy to achieve as Dark Magician is easy to summon. Each effect of Dark Magical Circle is a hard once per turn for proper balance, but this is still a three of for all it does for the Dark Magician Deck.

Art: 3.5/5 It’s Dark Magician’s circle basically, it doesn’t look bad, but it’s kind of lazy artwork.

I know we’ve done this once before that I can recall (but it isn’t in the archive of the archive, and I was too lazy to find it) but Dark Magic Circle is our Throwback Thursday pick this week.  This works a lot like a Spellbook card, which is appropriate to me.  When activated, you look at the top 3 cards of your Deck, and if one is Dark Magician or a Magic/Trap related to him, you can reveal said card and add it to your Hand.

The other two cards are returned to the top of your Deck in the order of your choosing.  So you net a card (assuming that one fit the criteria to be added to your Hand) and then you know what the next two cards your getting are.  Can’t go wrong with that.  Next, we see if a Dark Magician is Normal or Special Summoned to your Field (save the Damage Step) you get to remove a card from play your opponent controls.

Each one of these is a 1-for-1 effect here.  Netting a card from your Deck by playing this, and then taking a card of your opponent’s and removing it when you bring out your Dark Magician, making the Continuous aspect of this all the more delicious.  Each effect, naturally, is once per turn, but being it’ll stay on the Field, this should be able to generate you lots of advantage.

Art:  3.5/5  The color behind the seal is actually really neat, maybe like the seal is traveling, but the seal itself, despite being more visual than usual, is rather bland.

Dark Magical Circle is the card that made Dark Magician a viable archetype within the meta.

As someone who plays the deck in RL, I can say I was hyped when I heard about this card and Eternal Soul. You can brick on the first effect, but you still get to stack your deck for the next three turns. If you needed a card quicker, Circle will give you that option. Missing on the first effect won’t happen a lot, but it does happen, and it is frustrating when you need that card (any of them) and you don’t get it. The second effect is fantastic, but it is dependent on DM getting repetitively to the field. Eternal Soul, Dark Magic Veil, Monster Reborn, etc, these are needed to really get your bang for your buck out of Circle.

If it had protection it would be even better, being a Continuous Spell that will likely be the number one card to go after by your opponent (unless Eternal Soul is out there). It would have been incredible to have had a protection effect revolving around Dark Magician, either tributing it to save Circle or protection equal to the number of Dark Magician monsters on your side of the field.

Regardless, Dark Magic Circle is the best Spell in the archetype.
