There are so many dimensions to this card, which is slightly remarkable considering how straightforward its abilities are in themselves. You can just slot this into the upper part of the curve for a deck that seeks to take advantage of Esper themes or Tezzeret, and it’ll perform well – but where it really gets interesting is when your deck is dealing in ways to generate large amounts of mana. Want to take advantage of almost anything that looks at artifacts coming into or leaving play? Want to cast lots of off-color cards with a moderate amount of effort? Want to lose really, really hard to Burning-Tree Shaman? This is the card for you! Constructed: 3/5 |

Black/blue has oft had a bit of an artifact subtheme going on to it since the days of Alara, and Deadeye Plunderers is in that grand tradition. It’s also a pirate, and pirates do like their treasure, right? The strength of Deadeye Plunderers is that it’s a hugely self-sufficient engine that can take over Limited games easily. Its stats are markedly below-average unless you have one artifact…which, in Ixalan, shouldn’t be too hard, between the cheap artifacts and the Treasure generation. It even makes Treasure to buff itself. It’s not flashy, but it is very solid, especially in Limited. I feel it’s too slow to make it elsewhere, but I could be surprised that way. Constructed: 2.5 |

Ahoy matey, today is the final day of Pirate Week as well as the 4,000th COTD. Although a bit pricey at 5 mana, Deadeye Plunderers can quickly become a serious threat. It is always nice to have a card to sink mana into late game, its just weird that you’re investing mana into more mana. Most of the time you’ll want to save her ability either as a combat trick or at the end of your opponents turn to bluff a control spell. Clearly Plunderers is meant to be ran with a treasure deck, but there are a bunch of artifacts from Kaladesh, that can this card a huge power boost. This card loves the company of Torrential Gearhulk and Tezzeret, The Schemer. It’s just a shame that Clues rotated out of standard. Although not a great fit in every deck, when given the right support Deadeye Plunderers can start to run away with the game. Constructed: 3 |
