Q: I realize that your site has been open since August, but I was only aware of it after
it got linked by Planet Namek. I found it very interesting though. Now I was looking at
your old news and it implied that you did not originally do site reviews. So what did you
site consist of when it first opened?
A: When I first started the site I had editorials, movie reviews and the polls. It wasn't
until fairly recently that I began doing the website reviews, but they have certainly
become one of the main focuses of the site. I didn't start off with the website reviews
simply because I hadn't thought of it. When I was talking to Davelli from the Fate of
Vegeta he mentioned something about it, and I figured why not write some for my site.
Q: Now I take a ton of pride in my editorials and it looks as though you do to. How do you
feel editorials influence the people who visit your site?
A: Well, it gets people to think, and that let's them take in more of what's around them.
People inherently love controversey, so when they read an editorial they begin to think
themselves. It's when they start thinking that they start writing. However, whether or not
they write down what their thoughts are the visitors still enjoy the thought. If I can get
my visitors to start thinking instead of reading info it enhances their expierence at the
site.
Q: Your page has quite an interesting a ray of sections. Now the main sections in my
opinion would be reviews, site reviews, and editorials. That is quite an interesting
selection. Why those sections and compared to the other two what made you put in movie
reviews?
A: Well, the reason I went into those three was because I didn't see many sites that
focused on them, and I enjoy writing. Since I enjoy writing, updating the site isn't a
chore, and I update frequently because of it. Also, there is a decent selection of sites
on the internet that have editorials and reviews, but none that I know of feature them. I
update the editorials more often because of it. For example, VegettoEX's page has
editorials, but he doesn't write with the frequency that I do since he's got quite a few
other sections to worry about. Pretty much it boils down to something I felt I would want
to do. The movie reviews are incorporated into my site because they fit in with the
opinion theme of the site. Originally I intended to do editorials, but I wanted to expand,
and reach a broader audience. So when I made it I wrote movie reviews as well.
Q: OK, now lets move onto the series. What did you think of season 3, did you think it was
better or worse than season one or two?
A: I think season 3 overall was an improvement. The fact that the animation is un-altered
speaks for itself. The music was a bit better, but still nothing spectacular. I must
admit, I am very hopeful for the music in Season 4 after watching the Trunks Preview. The
voices are several steps back, however they are improving. Although I can never forgive
Funimation for what they did to Kurirrin.
Q: So, I don't know if you have heard, but what did you think of the Freeza, Piccolo, and
Kuririn characters that came out with guns and swords. What did you think Irwin hoped to
accomplish by this and what direction is Irwin try to influence Dragonball?
A: When I read that news at Planet Namek I thought it was a joke. I think they are trying
to steer it to a mainstream audience. The audience that hasn't necesarily seen the show,
but sees the toys. I'd imagine they are hoping kids will see these big guys with large
guns, and just buy them since they look cool. They probably gambled on the fact that most
serious fans wouldn't pay much attention.
Q: Do you see and hope for FUNimation and do you see them getting anywhere near let's say
the Majin Buu saga?
A: I think so, they have pushed the series for so long, I don't think they have any
imminent intention of stopping. I'm not sure whether or not the current popularity will
last, but I think it will through at least the Androids. Once they reach that point,
Funimation will probably continue to push it, they did come out with Season 3 during a
low-time for DB. I do hope they reach the Buu saga for a couple of reasons. Number one,
the quality on my fansubs just doesn't cut it, and I'd like to see how much Funimation
evolves the show.
Q: I can not believe all the sites that have closed down in the past year. What are your
opinion on that and do you see your site shutting down anytime soon?
A: It's a shame that so many sites are shutting down. Quite a few for more than bandwith
problems, the usual cause for a sites closure. I think alot of people simply lost interest
in their sites. The real tragedy is that alot of them took down their sites, instead of
simply not updating anymore. Both The Vault and DeathBall Z closed, and the content was
lost. It's too bad, but I hope enough sites step forward to replace them. I currently have
no intention of shutting down in the near future, or even the far future. I would only
shut it down if I wasn't enjoyinh the site anymore.
Q: One of the reason's I like your site it because you linked me.......no, thats not why.
I like your site because you update your site on a consistent basis and rather often. What
do you feel updated everyone one or two days does?
A: It keeps the visitors coming back. If they expect something new every couple of days,
then the visitors who enjoyed the site will come back every couple of days. The site
remains fresh, and doesn't become stagnant as long as I add something new a few times a
week. I decided to run it this way based on my observations as a visitor. It's nice when
you can come back every couple of days and have something new to loo at.
Q: So, is The Kienzans Edge your first idea for a web site or have you had other web sites
in the past. If so what were they called and about?
A: I had made a couple of pages in my early days to simply develop my HTML skills. I
started off with "Jeff's Page of Cool Links" or something to that effect.
Basically it was a page of links. I then moved on to a site about computer programming
that I kept up for about a month or two before losing interest. I currently run two sites,
one of course is the Kienzans Edge, the other is for my fathers Fantasy Football League.
The exception is I get payed for that one. Really, the Kienzans Edge is the first page I
made for myself that I have updated regularly.
Q: On your links page you rank each page, the highest rank is The Upper Echleon. If you
had to choose one thing that placed a site in the Upper Echleon what would it be?
A: Well, generally I look for a site to have many different topics, and do them all very
well. Furthermore, it must have a section that it develops better that the competition
that is original and new. Some have made it to the "Upper Echelon" for other
reasons, but generally that is what I look for.
Q: Out of all the sites you have reviewed so far which one have you enjoyed the most and
which one have you enjoyed the least ( I am not trying to put you up against the wall)?
A: The one I have enjoyed the most is probably VegettoEX's site. The editorials are
something I obviously enjoy, and I'm just a big sucker for the music of DragonBall. Planet
Namek is probably the one I enjoyed the least. It had little to do with the quality of the
site, it was simply challenging to review. Quite a few sections on the site are simply
information, and very non-descript. Plus the site is huge, it took a long time. On the
whole I enjoy doing most of the reviews I write since I get to look into the site in more
detail than I had ever before.
Q: Do you ever get sites that ask you for links and when you look at the site you want to
faint. What I mean have you ever gotten asked for a link by a site that just stunk and if
so can you tell us about it?
A: A few actually. When I get one, I try and write some pointers about how they can
improve the site. Some have had problems with the look of the site, others looked great
but had weak content. I believe that the amount of effort that goes into a site should be
respected so I always try and steer them in the right direction.
Q: Following up somewhat on the last question, have you had any problems with page
pirates. Wether you have or not what do you think about page pirates on the internet and
do you think they belong?
A: I haven't had any problems with any types of piracy. Probably since most of my images
aren't all that good, and most people don't steal editorials. I don't think there is any
place for page pirates anywhere on the internet. Why would I need a site that has stuff I
can get other places? I have little patience for it even though it's never directly
affected me.
Q: Out of all the sections on your site what do you take the most pleasure in doing?
A: Editorials, without a doubt. I have a lot more freedom over what I write on editorials.
When I write a review of either variety, I have to write about whatever is in the movie or
the site. When I write and editorial I have the freedom to write about whatever.
Q: Kienzans Edge is the name of your site and then you have that amazingly clever
introduction line, " The place for cutting edge editorials and reviews....." .
What a line, about how long did it take you to come up with that, heh heh?
A: Well, the original line was "The place for editorials and reviews.....", but
I felt it was in need of some work. The cutting edge part took me a long time to come up
with. I was asking people for suggestions, and still nothing. I just decided to tie in the
name of the site into the slogan, and so I simply threw a couple of words into it. Since
then it's kind of grown on me.
andy- Well it has been a pleasure and I hope you have much success in the future. By
the way thanks a lot for the interview
Jeff Maynes-The pleasure was all mine, and I wish you luck in the future with your site!
