Return to Pojo's Dragonball

Q: What made you want to start an all fan-oriented site? Don't you get bored of the site every once in a while?

A: When I first discovered Dragonball on the Internet, I noticed that there were sites that specialized in its various aspects. Humor could be found at Meri's Temple O' Trunks; any information you wanted on the series was at Greg Werner's Ultimate DBZ Info. Site; and multimedia was covered by VegettoEX's Home Page. Before I started my site, however, I had not come across any highly popular sites dedicated to Fandom on the net. Of course, now that my site's up and running, it hasn't exactly become highly popular either. Anyway, for that reason, my original plans for making a Dragonball website were always directed towards making a Fan-Oriented website. I knew I couldn't scan enough pictures to make a decent layout, I was not going to stoop to the level of page piracy, and I had plenty of DBZ Fanart lying around. Also, by making my site entirely dependent on Fandom, I am assured an infinite amount of expansion possibilities. There is a finite amount of Dragonball images and information that can be explored. Eventually, everything drawn or created by Akira Toriyama could be put on the net, and no more could be done. By creating a Fan-Oriented website, hopefully I will never run out of material. There will always be people drawing and writing about Dragonball and its characters. I have thought of adding informational sections in the past; such as Bios, Relationships, Techniques…but when pages such as Planet Namek started coming out with work that was far superior to anything that I could put together, I figured that it would not be worth my time and effort to do it originally. So, to make a long answer short, every other topic was pretty well covered, and Fandom is/was what I'm good at.

Yea, every once in a while the site gets boring. When that happens, however, I just take about a week or so hiatus. I have plenty of other things that happen in my life to keep me occupied. What really keeps me interested in the site are the Fansubmissions I get. It's always a nice surprise to see a new Fanart/fic in my mailbox. I have a few loyal contributors that have long-running Fics on my site, and those are always an interesting read. I have no plans to let the site go static, as long as the submissions keep coming in.

Q: Hey, your site is still pretty young. Any plans in the future to change/expand its focus to more than just fandom?

A: Whoops, kind of answered that one earlier, but I'll expound upon it here. I am currently working on an editorial that is leaning more towards informational. If it turns out to be somewhat successful, I may do others of that type. So if anything on my site will lead away from true Fandom, it would probably be in the editorial section. Do not look for any major changes, though. My site's doin' fine the way it is, and I'm gonna keep it going that way.

Q: All right, let's talk about something else besides your site. So what did you think of Season 3? Was it better or worse than what you expected?

A: So far, I think it's been good. It could have been better, but it wasn't as godawful as some predicted it would be. Some parts were better than I had thought, but others were much worse. The biggest hit to me was when I heard Piccolo's and Vegeta's new VAs. It saddened me to hear the big ole' green guy portrayed that way, and Brian Drummond was Vegeta, there was no other voice possible. I think I actually beat myself in the head when Piccolo made his first appearance in Season 3. As the new episodes continued on, however, the voices kind of grew on me. Not too much, though. I'd take Scott McNeil and Drummond back any day. The nicest bonus that I got from Season 3, however, was the "edited" version on CN. It was a vast improvement over what was shown on television from the first two seasons. Without a doubt, though, the worst part of Season 3 goes to the Dialogue. It was disgusting at the beginning of the season. The end of the season was getting much better, (I loved what FUNimation did with the last Freezer Saga episode, even Bulma's use of "homeboy,") so I am looking forward to seeing what the Garlic Jr. Saga looks/sounds like. Also, since CN's announced they were looking for a new title song for DBZ, things are looking better in that area.

Q: Do you see any hope for FUNimation?

A: There is always hope. Yes, FUNimation can improve. Yes, I foresee American DBZ getting better. However, FUNimation won't get it perfect. The episodes are slowly getting better, and there are so many episodes left that one has to have hope. Facing the facts: the dialogue can't get much worse, the background music could use a lot of improvement, and the voice acting is somewhat palatable. Superceding all of this is the fact that FUNimation will be releasing subtitled DBZ on DVD!! The added bonuses that will be put on these DVD's will definitely make them worthwhile buys. If FUNimation holds true to their promise of subbed DBZ DVD, then I have all the hope in the world for them.

Q: What in your opinion seriously needs work when it comes to the series. Would you rather see the original music or the original dialogue put back into the show

A: What? You're saying we can't have both? (laughs) In this case, I would have to say that the dialogue would be the better choice for improvement. My mind can block out the music if it's bad enough, but bad dialogue kills any scene. The story could be told, albeit without as much emotion, without the background music. Since dialogue is such an integral part of the story, it must be done well. You cannot get much better than going with a direct Japanese translation. When one considers that the subbed DBZ DVD's will contain both the original music and script, the future looks bright. I am just biding my time until they come out.

Q: If you could have FUNimation bring one DBZ movie over to the U.S., which would it be, and why?

A: Hmm….that's a toughie. I could always go with my favorite movie; Movie #9 (The Bojack Movie, if you haven't memorized the numbers,) but if FUNimation does a bad job on the translation and everything, I won't be able to stand it. The background music and dialogue in #9 are so goddamn fitting that anything that FUNimation could do will be a third rate job in comparison. Personally, I really am not looking forward to seeing the next DBZ movie that FUNimation puts out. I am worried of what they could do to it. I understand that the series can improve as it goes along because of the massive amount of episodes available. The movies, on the other hand, are stand-alone stories. If they're done badly once, they're done badly forever. FUNimation can't improve a movie and re-release it. Unless they wait to release the rest of the movies until they've gotten decent voice actors, I say give me my fansubs any day!!

Q: What is your favorite type of fandom and why.

A: I believe that all fandom is good, so this question is very opinionated. My vote goes to Fanart, if only because that is what I do best. Fanart is probably my favorite, because…….because…..aw hell, I don't know. I just like doing it! I get to draw pictures, and I like doing that! The recognition thing is nice, too. I've had people come up to me in class, notice a sketch I'm working on, and ask me, "Is that one of those Anime characters? Yeah, isn't that okay or something?" It's obvious that they do not know what the hell they're talking about, but they can tell what it is that I'm drawing. The recognition my work has gotten hasn't stopped with that, though. I'll never forget the day that one of the Japanese foreign exchange students at my school looked at one of my drawings of Trunks and said in a very thick Japanese accent, "Dragonball?" It was all I could do to just smile and nod. That was the pinnacle of my Fanart career.

Q: So, any major plans coming up in the future that you can let us in on?

A: Yea, I got some major plans for you. First off, I'm gonna graduate in May, (about damn time, too,) I'm heading off to college, I don't wanna get a job…oh, you meant future stuff with the SITE? Okay. Unless some shocking revelation comes to me out of nowhere, the answer is "No." I have no major plans in the works. Since I just revamped the site and changed to a no-frames version, I have kind of been putting any major plans on the back burner for a while. I am going to keep my Fanart coming in, and I will keep accepting Fansubmisions. Everything is going well, and I hope it continues that way.

Q: When do you expect another lesson to be posted? I attempted to follow the coloring Manga, but I didn't have the patience.

A: Yea, I've kind of let that part of my site go dormant lately. I know I promised a small HTML tutorial a while ago, but I never got around to it. The main reason that I have the How-To section is because I kind of threw it together in about 2 hours. I had the edited Manga pic that I used saved in stages, so I didn't have to work too hard getting them together. I know that this probably means I should be able to put up a new Tutorial once every two weeks or so, but I'm incredibly lazy. I just had a sudden desire to create a new section for my site, and went along with it. In the future, that's probably how that section will progress. More as a "spur-of-the-moment" type thing. Who knows, tomorrow I might sit down and think to myself, "Hey, I think I'm gonna do a tutorial on 'How To Draw Gohan' today," or something. I guess I really do not know when I'll make another How-To section. Rest assured, though, that if I ever get the urge to do some teaching in the future, it'll be there.

Q: Have you had any other web sites in the past? If so what were they called and what were they about?

A: Nope, my first venture onto the World Wide Web is what you see.

Q: A little bit of a different question. Now whenever you want to post up a new fan oriented work you have to download it from an e-mail. Don't you ever worry that some idiot is going to send you a virus or something along those means?

A: That's an eye-opener. I guess I never thought of that. I trust the Dragonball Fandom community a little better than that. Maybe it's misplaced trust, but I believe that deep down human beings are really decent. I really hope nobody is mean enough to send a virus via email disguised as some kind of Dragonball fandom. However, I guess if somebody really hated Dragonball, I could see them doing something like that. To err on the side of caution, however, my computer is equipped with preliminary virus scanners. Although I'm not quite sure how that program works, I have faith that it'll tell me if something evil makes it through.

Q: Have you had any problems with page piracy? Even though your whole site is fan related I have known people to steal fan art. What do you think of page pirates, and do they belong anywhere on the web?

A: Yea, I've caught a few people using my images without credit. A speedy email giving them my opinion of what they had done rectified the situation very quickly. I have not yet seen anybody with flagrant Code Stealing, though. You also have to remember that my page has had a grand total of like 5 visitors, so the chances that someone has taken my work or HTML is very slim. I have a policy of not letting people use my work unless I submitted it personally, so even emails I get requesting an image are denied.

As for my personal opinion of page pirates, I would have to say this: LEARN THE VALUE OF DOING SOMETHING ON YOUR OWN OR DON'T DO IT AT ALL!!! Damn…if any of the page pirates out there actually put together their own original website, they would know of the hours of typing and checking and rechecking and the little things that it takes to make a decent website. If you haven't scanned your own images, encoded your own multimedia, or researched enough for informational matters, then don't even try creating a good webpage. You will not succeed. The 'net has enough worthless sites out there. Page pirates and their pages represent a community of; pardon my stereotypical nature here, 6-13 year old kids who don't know the meaning of DOING SOMETHING ORIGINAL!!! Most of them believe it is perfectly fine to just copy and paste HTML coding that took an honest webmaster a decent amount of time to write. It sickens me when I click on a random link and I see a blatantly copied Planet Namek layout, or Werner's sections used without credit. Page pirates do not belong on the web.

Q: Has your site been affected when it comes to content, because most of your site is based on what other people submit?

A: Most of the content that I is submitted is very good. I have had very little work put in to me that is not good, and even less of what is submitted doesn't make it onto my page. Because I haven't been around for too long, I haven't been very choosy as to what goes up in my page! I think that all of the art I have gotten has been put up. The writing has given me a little trouble, though. I try not to play the editor when people submit writing to me, but sometimes that is hard. I know the English language pretty well, and nothing annoys me more when I am reading something than bad grammar or usage. I usually give editorials/fics a quick once-over to make sure that no obvious errors are present. As I am extremely lazy, and have actually gotten quite a few submissions lately, I haven't put forth that much effort into my editing.

Q: What is your favorite song from the Japanese soundtrack?

A: Another hard choice...so many that are so good. The classic "ChaLa" will always be near the top of my favorite Dragonball songs. I haven't really dabbled into the original Dragonball songs, (read as 'Not DBZ,') so I can't really judge any of them. Any of the GT songs would rank up there, though. "Sabitsuita Machine Gun…," that's a good one. "Blue Velvet," "Dan Dan Kokoro…," they're all just so damn good. I guess my answer to this question would be the GT Songs. I don't know if it's because they are the most modern of the Dragonball series' songs, or if there's another reason I like them. They are my favorites.

Q: Who is your favorite character; and if you could have any two people fight, who would they be and what would be the outcome?

A: I think Brodie of Kevin Smith's 'Mallrats' said it best: "Wow, that's a great question. Tough one, though. I mean, what does one gauge his response on? Physical prowess, keen detection skills, the ability to banter well with super villains?" GAAHH!! You're making me pick a favorite character? I'll tell you that SSJ3 Goku looks the coolest. I really haven't thought about this one that much. I enjoy all the characters with their own subtleties. I enjoy Goku's innocent demeanor; Prince Vegeta's overbearing personal pride; Kuilin's little, "Why does this always happen to me?" line; Chibi Goten and Trunks' hilarious antics; Piccolo's "I'm gonna kick your ass if you look at me wrong again," presence; they are all perfect. I actually see that I have no one favorite character. I'm sorry if this is ducking the question a little bit, but it really is true. They're all my favorites.

I'm going to have to duck your second part, also. There is one fight that I have always wanted to see occur, however unlikely it is that it would happen. The two "people" that I would like to see duking it out are Shenron and Porunga (grins.) I mean, can you imagine that? Two nearly omnipotent eternal dragons battling it out in a blackened sky? The mere fact that they each dragon is easily over 300 feet tall/long would make the fight incredible. As to who would win the fight, this one would be close. Porunga obviously has the bigger physique and the longer arms, but Shenron is so damn long! I guess I would have to predict Shenron for the win. I think he'd wrap up Porunga and do a boa-constrictor thing on him. Or maybe he'd just use his one wish to kill Porunga. Of course, it could go the other way. Porunga could use one of his three wishes to do whatever he wanted to do to Shenron. Who knows?

Q: Now for the last question: What did you want to see happen when Y2K hit?

A: Well….I'm not quite sure. I missed the fireworks that went off downtown, those would've been nice to catch, I suppose. I'm glad that no half-whacked terrorists bombed Time's Square or anything. I'm glad I didn't have to see Dick Clark dropping that ball thing. I guess what I wanted to see happen was for the entire world to put aside paltry differences for just a few hours, and coexist peacefully with their fellow man. I mean world peace, man! Cats sleeping next to dogs, Canadians making their own culture, Republicans getting along with Democrats, stuff like that, heh heh. How's that for a sappy answer? Seriously, though, I would have liked to see the ATMs in town decide to give everyone free mass withdrawals. Right after midnight. I would have been standing outside one with a big Hefty bag and a shovel. By one o'clock, I would have upped my tax bracket three or four times.
