I’ll just come out and say it, because it’s on other parts of the internet too: Dragonhawk looks very much like a Kolaghan dragon from Tarkir, and is thus hinting that the current story arc will conclude on that fan-favorite plane. It also hints that the dragon-khans have some new tricks in their arsenal, with a powerful variant on the “impulsive” card-drawing effects that have become common in red. Actually, its ability to deal damage as a sort of alternate mode for that card-drawing reminds me of Chandra, Torch of Defiance, who’s caused a lot of trouble to a lot of opponents over the years. Being a creature makes Dragonhawk slightly more susceptible to countermeasures, but in a properly constructed deck, it’s a threat that must be answered and can put a game out of reach in at least two different ways.

Here to show how bad swooping is, Dragonhawk, Fate’s Tempest is the unnatural disaster here to antagonize Bloomburrow before it gets driven off by a plucky band of animals. Dragonhawk’s a pretty interesting creature, though, that plays a bit with the “impulse draw” mechanic to both accrue advantage and threaten burnination. It gets you one card on its own each turn, including the turn it enters, and it turns what you don’t play into fuel for a pretty big fire. Creatures like these make formidable threats because they both get to more fuel to push an advantage and help you come back from a rough patch, and while it’s not phenomenal at the latter, it ca do that on top of really forcing a good position. Add two good tribes and an efficient statline, and this is a dragon that can swoop early and often.
