I know that Wizards of the Coast feels like there are design issues with prowess that keep it from being an evergreen keyword in blue and red, but when prowess-based designs come together, they do so really well indeed. Drake Hatcher is capable of so many things: it can beat opponents to death directly, and surprisingly fast. It can go wide in the style of Talrand, also deceptively fast. Drakes are becoming a rather prolific token-heavy kindred, reminiscent of Saprolings, and I’m sure there’s at least one powerful and fun casual deck with her at the center. I wouldn’t automatically suggest this card will do the same in tournaments, yet three toughness and the promise of multiple creatures is nothing to laugh at, particularly if you’re already playing a Xerox-style one-mana cantrip deck. And the art even looks like the cover of every cheap fantasy novel I read in college!

Drake Hatcher feels like a very blue creature, all in all. It has a decent body, and when it hits players, it builds up to a swooping friends. Prowess does a decent amount of work in letting this go from “nuisance” to “threat” by leaning into the blue element of casting spells. This can definitely spit out a lot of threats once it gets going, and it even can build up power while staying back as a defensive threat. If you get some support, this can definitely snowball a game hard, though it really needs a couple of instants and sorceries to really come online.

Limited: 4.75 (an army in a can, if you support it a bit)
