That Guy That
Plays DreamBlade |
SILHOUETTE
New pieces keep on flowing, and Charninja picked
some of the cooler common / uncommons for this
week. We start with a Fear 4 drop, which Fear
lacks a good one IMO. He's 3 - 4/5, which is
more aggressive for a 4 drop. Now his effect is
one that might make him see play in big
tourneys. Shadow prevents him from being
targeted by effects. What does that save him
from? Warpstrike and Venom are the damaged based
ones he can escape. He also isn't falted by
Lure, Expel, or Scare. In a way, he's best
against Fear, which is odd since he is Fear.
Still, Fear is big, which can make this guy a
good guy to have around for the mirror match, or
for all those bands that splash Thunder Sultans
and Voodoo's to cause havoc.
Constructed - 3/5 - Not a game-breaking effect,
but he's a decent piece that will do well in the
early game.
Sealed - 4.5/5 - This is where he shines. More
effects to dodge here, plus more of a need to
have him included to fill in the low spots of
your curve.
Artwork - 2/5 - Not as cool as most art in this
set.

Silhouette
Yeah, yeah, I know, I know. It's been so long
since I did a review, but hey guys, college, it
ain't exactly easy, you know.
Anyway, this week, I've picked some figs I
believe will be sleeper hits. Nice, solid stats
with abilities that may or may not be
immediately figured as good. These may not be
better than Baxar, Ragedrake, Angel of Sunrise,
or whatever else have you, but I'm telling you,
pay attention to these in the future. If I'm
proved wrong... well poot, but at least I'll
have made my case. Depending on what the other
guys pick, you can look forward to the stars of
this set next week, I don't know.
But now, to start the week off, here's a little
waif known as Silhouette.
4F gets you some very nice stats, with 3 4|5. He
does have plenty of competition for that spot,
but all of them are weaker, and generally... not
very good. Walking Worms MIGHT do alright,
but... I don't like it nearly as much as I do
Shadow Fiend here. If you REALLY like Soul Grub,
Hellshrieker, or Knight of Pain and Sorrow...
well, I don't like them either, except for the
Knight, but I still don't think she's as good as
this dude. Trust me on this, 3 power for 4 spawn
cost is GOOD.
Then, there's his effect. Yes, it is a bit of a
double edged sword, but still, total immunity to
a wide variety of thing is very, very nice. No
expel, no scare, no warpstrike, no venom.
However, there's also no advance, and no
skirmish. Of course, you could use the last
piece we're reviewing to get him going, and the
next one too... Now yes, non-targeting abilities
will affect him. He is screwed by Cyclopean
Sprite and Crypt Worm, but at that same token,
will be very appreciative of Angel of Sunrise
and Virtuous Maiden.
Truth be told, I do agree with some of the
criticisms of this creature though. He is still
in the lightweight division, and as such, most
people will generally just try to kill him with
a strike instead of shunt him with expel or
whatever. This ability would be frigging AWESOME
on a piece with 5 or 6 power, because then he'd
be a very large threat, but then, the drawback
of not being able to Advance him would start to
really come into play. Of course, you could
bring people to it... Anyway, there are issues
with this guy, but I still think he deserves
some action and play testing. I would be VERY
surprised if people didn't like him.
Constructed: 3/5 Come on, great stats for his
cost and is unaffected by your enemy's blades
(usually). Only thing that hurts him is that you
won't be able to help him out either.
Limited: 3.5/5 Hey, you won't have much
competition for him, not if you're playing
straight BW. If you do have some Base Set to
pull from, it's possible... but most of those
suck.
