Hello fellow
dreamers. Sorry we've been out for so long.
Don't know what's been going on with the other
guys, but I for one have been gorging on eggnog
and dreaming of wiis. That's my excuse and I'm
sticking to it.
Anyway, drinking habits aside, here we have the
latest addition to the Zungar family, Zungar
Standardbearer. Big flag, big sword, and
come-into-play Skirmish. What's not to like?
Make no mistake, this dude probably is the
single best Zungar we have had. 8VV is getting
us 4 Power, 8 Defense, and 9 Life. One point
less than the Bodyguard and he beats him pretty
soundly because he actually has a decent
cost-to-stat ratio. Also, even a one-off
Skirmish is better than Bodyguard when we are
investing anything more than 4 spawn points. The
Zungar are finally getting some love.
Thing is... this guy is pretty simplistic.
Skirmish is a very overused Valor ability, just
like Scare is for Fear or Crit is for Passion.
Sure, it's still a very solid power, but it
is... boring. The fact that it's only useable
once under normal circumstances doesn't help. He
is, however, another wonderful CIP piece to use
with Baxar and Citadel, and if we ever get an
Edgemaker-type ability for CIP abilities... well
that would be pretty broken and even if the with
it has crappy stats, it will still make a
completely new kind of warband thanks to
Lockjaw, Buzzclaw... and this dude.
However, that's for the future, assuming we ever
actually see such a piece. As it stands, he
still has Brighthammer Avenger, Saint of Roses,
Whirlwind Dervish, Temple Lion, and Sightless
Eunuch to compete with. BHA and Whirlwind
Dervish are the main ones to worry about, but
Eunuch and Lion do have their supporters as
well. The only thing this guy REALLY has going
for him is that he's a common, which makes him
PERFECT for sealed/limited. This guy will shine
brightest in those major tourneys; not in
constructed.
So yeah. Not the big bruiser flagship piece I'd
have liked to review, like what we all hope
World Eater and Pearlthorn Dragon Knight are,
but we still got a nice little limited gift
here. Deal with it.
Constructed: 3/5 I can think of considerably
worse pieces that you could play, but god knows
there are so many other good ones out there as
well. If your collection is limited, he's a
great filler piece until you build up.
Limited: 4/5 The thing that works best in the
Standardbearer's favor is his rarity, or lack
thereof. He's got pretty nice, solid stats, and
an ability that, while not very exciting, is
certainly going to be useful by the time you are
ready to bring out guys at his point in the
spawn curve. |

Zungar
Standardbearer
Ok, new piece review. Sorry I've been away from
this since school exam time is kicking up. Today
we have a new set from the Plague. Off the back,
he has the exact same stats as Whirlwind
Dervish. That already makes it a powerful force.
Although not as defensive as most Valor pieces,
it can still do good in the dreamscape. 4 power
is also decent, plus this guy has a power! Not
bad for a common. Its nothing new, but its how
it is used. Skirmish has seen alot of play, but
never as a come into play ability. So how could
this be useful?? One idea of mine is to toss it
as a 1-of in the Kistune bands that have seen
top tables. Being able to throw in an additional
movement during the spawn phase can greatly
change board position to later shift and strike
upon. Besides that, it doesn't have too much of
an impact, seeing as it only works once does it
make it anymore useful to you. Of course, you
could Call it back with Baxar, but there is no
real need for Skirmish much in Fear bands,
especially for 8 spawn! Another new piece to
experiment with should be fun.
Constructed - 2/5 - really only see a good
impact in Kistune bands
Sealed - 2.5/5 - kinda hard to tell, but it
seems like they're trying to play down on the
movement abilities that everyone seems to love
too much. Any movement helps!
Artwork - 4/5 - Ardent grew up!!! Now he's a
solider with random weaponry |
