  Death Smoke

Base Set

Date Reviewed: 4.26.04

Constructed Average Rating: 4.15
Limited Average Rating: 4.85

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst. 3 ... average.
5 is the highest rating.

Hydromorph Death Smoke

Like Spiral Gate, Death Smoke is just going to be one of those Darkness staple cards. Four mana for one creature is amazing, granted you can get to the creature before it gets going, or gets attacking. Lots of Light creature are vulnerable since the good ones either untap after their initial attack, or are blockers, and are nine times out of ten untapped during your turn.

In limited, creature kill is creature kill. An early pick.

Constructed - 4

Limited - 4.5

 Otaku

Name: Death Smoke

Type: Spell

Civilization: Darkness

Cost: 4

Effect: Destroy 1 of your opponent’s untapped creatures.

Flavor Text: Savor the taste of fear!

Mana#: 1

Set/Card#/Rarity: Base Set, 53/110, Common

Attributes: This is your basic Spell card.  If this was a shield Trigger, it would have a shot at being the top monster removal card.  Oh well.  Chances are they would have tacked on another mana of cost then, which would not have helped it.

Abilities: You get to destroy one of your opponent’s untapped creatures!  Click. Click.  BOOM!  Obviously, this doesn’t help if your opponent is already blitzing you with a card-if it’s attacking, it’s been tapped.  However, until the Evolutions come out, you will always have a window of one turn to nuke something.  This is rally great for clearing high Power blockers, who wouldn’t yet be tapped though.

Uses/Combinations: Any deck that can fit in black.  Budget decks should always run black, btw: Some Rippers and this can make up for a lack of Terror Pits.

Ratings

Newbie Format: 4/5-Easy to get and very effective.

Standard: 4/5-Here most people can afford the good stuff, but I am not dropping the rating, because in a Darkness Deck (and many di- and tricolor decks), you will want to be running a load of removal.

Limited: 5/5-All creature removal is great in this format.  Yes, some are better than others, but they are all so good without going into a lot of detail.

Summary

Probably number three for Creature removal, and number two for creature kill (Terror Pit is tops, and Spiral Gate is number two for removal).

Stegyman Death Smoke

Creature removal is good.

Death Smoke: Darkness Spell, 4-Mana. Intrigued? It says that you can destroy one of your opponent's untapped creatures. Did I mention this card is ONLY a common?..

Is this a good card? Heck yeah! =P Every deck that you'll see that is running Darkness is running 4/4 on Terror Pit and Death Smoke. Why? Because destroying creatures is good! Terror Pit can destroy any creature and is a Shield Trigger, while Death Smoke can destroy any one untapped creature. If your opponent had just played something like a King Depthcon or Deathblade Beatle, then you can play Death Smoke and destroy it, since that creature card would be untapped. Awesome, huh?

Pros: COMMON, destroy any untapped creature

Cons: 4-Mana w/ no Shield Trigger

The earliest you could play this card would be on your forth turn, but you'll probably be just setting up then. In Limited this card is so awesome it's unbelievable. Definately a first pick if you see it.

Tournament: 4/5

Limited: 5/5
