Today we finish the week with some eye
candy. The artwork for Syrius,
Firmament Elemental looks dangerously
inspiring but is that all that Syrius
has to offer?

Ok, aside from the cool artwork the
first thing that everyone sees is the
cost, and we are justified in doing so.
If we ever need to spend more than seven
mana on a card it better be
game-breaking, right? Well let’s take a
look. We’re paying eleven mana for a
creature with 12,000 power. This seems
like a terrible waste. Duel Masters is
a game of mind over power. If you
really do have 11 mana to tap then
you’re better off casting a combo
instead of a creature that could be
fodder for Corile, Terror Pit, Critical
Blade, etc.
The blocker effect isn’t too great
either. For example, it can’t do
anything versus slayers and various
dragons. So basically if you run a card
like this in a deck you better either be
using Transmogrify to get it out (still
a waste) or stall long enough to get 11
mana so your opponent can laugh when you
put Syrius down. Seriously, if you have
11 mana to spend, then play Aeris and
evolve into Alcadeias or do something
equally useful.
The Good:
Yes, there are better creatures to be
using Transmogrify on but at least this
one blocks. A transmogrify combo could
throw your opponent off.
The Bad:
The power-to-cost ratio is lackluster
and the effect do not justify the cost.
The Ugly:
If you’re basing a non-transmogrify deck
around this card you’ll be lucky if you
even make it to turn 11.
Constructed Rating:
2/5 – Transmogrify is the only card
which makes this creature somewhat
adequate
Limited Rating:
1/5 – I’ve never EVER seen anyone who
could summon this thing in limited.

questions, and/or objections on the
