Survivors of the Megapocalypse (revealed) Part 1/7
SET 5; Survivors of the Megapocalypse (exposed!)
Part 1 - A Basic Overview
This is part one of my 7 part look at set five, Survivors of the Megapocalypse.
I'll take a look at all 5 civilisations through this, and I will review every
card in at least semi-major detail. For today we'll be looking at the new card
type in the set.
Although set 4, Shadowclash of Blinding Night has only just been released, if
your like me you will already be looking forward to the next set, entitled the
Survivors of the Megapocalypse. It's another one of the 60 card boosters, and
like every set released so far (except Rampage) it has a new type of ability for
cards. Survivors. I'm not a big fan of survivors, and when it comes out I'll
probably still stick with using Shield Trigger creatures. But for those who like
to explore new possibilities - let's have a look at Survivors.
When a Survivor card is placed on the field, nothing special happens at first. A
survivor card is a basic creature, which has an average effect like; Blocker,
Unblockable, Slayer and if you want to beat down your opponent you can have a
Power Attacker and Double Breaker. Wait... didn't our cards already have those
abilities? Yes. While, there is a catch to Survivors - whatever ability they
have with [Survivor] is passed onto any other creature which also has
[Survivor]. So you bring out a survivor card which is a [survivor] blocker. Then
you bring out a card which is [survivor] unblockable. That means that both of
the cards which come on with the survivor ability, both are unblockable
blockers. Pretty sweet, huh? There are also about 6-7 other survivor abilities
that you can combine together and create hybrid creatures with tons of abilties.
Sort of like those new transformers...
The big problem with survivors are that they come in all different civilisations,
meaning that it's quite hard to play survivors in mono decks without only being
able to come up with survivors that give each other the same ability. Where
Rampage had the theme of mono decks, Shadowclash promoted having 2 color hate
decks, Survivors of the Megapocalypse trys to get 3 color decks into the picture
by having survivors. But survivors aren't the only new things in the set, infact
the best newbie trade baits since Bolshack are in this set.
Triple Breakers. They break - not 1, not 2, not 4, but 3 shields! Lovely isn't
it? Not really in my opinion. There are only a few Triple Breakers in this set,
and most of them are overpriced to the extent of going in to double figure mana
cost. The only one I'd play is the nature triple breaker, which is only a damn
rare. Little kids are gonna be scrambling to get these cards - but any duelist
in his right mind would probably stick with the Double Breakers, and the only
real Double Breakers easily usable are evolutions. So you can see where normal
breakers can be just as good...
BUT WAIT! Theres more! We've got a couple of cards in this set, not enough to
make a full deck out of - but they pack a mean punch in mono fire rush and
fire/nature decks. We have speed attackers! One of the speed attackers is a 5
mana for 3000, which is pretty decent - or you can step up to a 7 mana for 7000
double breaker which would be usable in decks that create acceleration. Since
there isn't many speed attackers out there, it probably wouldn't be to wise to
put them in your deck yet. You may want to wait until lower cost ones come out
as well. Blockers can still block speed attackers, so anti-blocker cards are a
must.
Yes, there is another ability of creatures tossed into the mix for us to use.
However, it is so obsolete and basically unusable that I won't bother mentioning
it until I get to my fire section. Let's just say, not really worth it at all.
That's part 1 of my article series: SURVIVORS OF THE MEGAPOCALYPSE (revealed!)
finished. Next time there will be part 2 - where we take a look at an indepth
look at all the light cards in the set.
See you then! JORDYCE, TikkuGaming@hotmail.com
