Survivors of the
Megapocalypse Review for Sealed Part 3: Fire
Fire Civilization
One of the comforts of
Sealed is that Evolution Creatures don’t run rampant like they do in
Constructed play. Evolution Creatures have the potential to own if dropped,
but getting them to hit the field is no easy task in Sealed. Speed Attackers
are bombs because the lack of summoning sickness is killer in Limited and
they don’t require evo bait to get out. With blockers being in less numbers,
it’s like you’re almost guaranteed a hit with one of them. In addition to
the “lack of summoning sickness” madness of the Speed Attackers, Fire sports
funky hand disruption, the cheapest Survivor, a double breaker-granting
Survivor, and the fattest hitter in the game. If you’re all about the beats,
then Fire’s your civilization of choice for Sealed.
Blazosaur Q
I know it seems like I give
every low cost creature a High rating. I do it because the early game is
very important in Sealed, and such creatures are great when they pack a
solid effect. You want to be the person hitting first and constantly, and if
you can’t do that then you want some defense as early as you can get it.
Blazosaur is weak on the tap, but while attacking it can slam creatures with
2000 power. That’s enough power to take out many creatures costing more than
it, like the other unpumped Survivors, and he shares that ability with any
of your other Survivors. Blazosaur is best with his buddies but also a good
pick on its own.
Playability: High
Cyclone Panic
This is type of spell you’d
play when your options are less than your opponent or crappy. This spell has
potential in Constructed, but I don’t like the gamble in Sealed. What if I
give my opponent his cheap bomb with Panic? I like hand discard in limited
much better than hand disruption. Still, it forces your opponent to
unexpectedly change plans if you cast it when you have a lousy hand. Be wise
off the trigger if you deck this card.
Playability: Low
Kip Chippotto
I don’t are about its
dragon-saving effect in Sealed. Bolgash is the only Armored Dragon of the
set, and chances are high you won’t have them both out at the same time if
you attack with Kip. It’s power for the cost is very low. It’d have to weigh
my other 3 drops before decking this card. If I have little going for my
early game then I’d deck it. Playability: Medium
Rikubu, the Dismantler
…On the other hand Rikabu’s
effect makes up for its awful power at 3 mana. Speed Attacker will help you
push for the win wherever there isn’t a blocker in sight.
Playability: High
Ruthless Skyterror
It can kill many tapped
creatures including some Double Breakers and slam some Water ones before
they attack. The majority of the Water creatures in this set cost more than
Ruthless, and all have less power.
Playability: High
Cannoneer Bargon
It’s straight 4 for 4000,
which is solid in Sealed. It’s a shield trigger creature so that’s a bonus.
Its downside is that it can’t attack players, and I feel Ruthless is much
better in the ‘slam a tapped hitter’ at 4 mana category due to its power.
Playability: Medium
Bombat, General of Speed
3000 for 5 mana--as stated
before this isn’t good. Oh, wait, Bombat lacks summoning sickness. Bombat
can slam a shield or hit a tapped weenie the moment it drops. If your
opponent as no blockers, good times.
Playability: High
Twin-Cannon Skyterror
Let’s see—hit for 2 to the
dome the moment I play it? Has 7000 power so it’s hard to deal with? Costs 7
mana so it’s a reasonable late game play? Really, do I even need to explain
why you should jump for joy when you pull this card?
Playability: High
Bladerush Skyterror Q
Not as super-doper as
Twin-Cannon or as scary as Nocturnal Giant on its own, but it’s still a
worthy Sealed deck creature due to its double breaker and sharing effect. If
you have any other Survivors out with it, then you have more than one double
breaker (plus whatever other effect the other ones have) for your opponent
to worry about.
Playability: Medium
Bolgash Dragon
8 mana isn’t an obscene
mana cost for Sealed, but it’s still expensive. This creature had better win
you the game when you attack with it due to its low base power of 4,000.
It’s a good thing that it can slam for 3, so use it wisely if you deck it.
When attacking it nabs 12,000 power—it will overrun blockers.
Playability: Low
Cataclysmic Eruption
I’m very hard on spells or
creature effects that depend on a certain amount of creatures in your battle
zone or mana counts in Sealed. Not only does Eruption cost 8 mana, but also
its mana destruction effect depends on the number of Nature creatures you
have in your battle zone. It doesn’t destroy creatures, so that alone makes
me like the card less. If it doesn’t wipe away all the mana or a sizable
chunk then I don’t care.
Playability: Not playable
Billion-Degree Dragon
It’s Timmy’s favorite
Triple Breaker! Billion is the biggest darn thing you’ve ever seen. It’s
hits for 3, overruns everything in its wake, can kill anything it
desires—oops it’s 10 mana. Hey, you might get away with decking this
creature. But 10 mana is no short order when you need to play the cards in
hand more than stockpile mana.
Playability: Not playable
Fire has a nice array of
bombs and solid hitters. The stars of the civilization for Sealed are the
Speed Attackers, so gobble them up if you pull them.
