Epic Dragons of Hyperchaos Sealed Review
– Fire Ratings

October 22, 2005

By Christina “cecillbill” Page

Fire Civilization

Fire offers a nice suite of removal options, some scary fattie threats, and a chance to pillage your opponent’s mana supply. Like some of Darkness’ offerings, the utility of some Fire cards in Sealed depend on the other options at your disposal and whether or not you’re willing to take risks with effects that can backfire on you.

Volcano Charger

This is an auto-pick for me. It’s removal and mana gain. Hit one of your opponent’s cards and then advance your plays. There are over 10 creatures that it can hit.

Rating: High

Totto Pipicchi

It’s a 3 drop—helps mount early pressure. It can turn all your Dragons into Speed Attackers, which is definitely nice. But, it turns ALL Dragons into speed attackers—yours and your opponent’s. Not good. Suppose your opponent plays his Dragons first and then you slap this guy down. You could try playing a Dragon the same turn as this creature, but that’s no easy task given that the cheapest Dragon is 4 mana. I’d sooner skip this creature because it has the chance to greatly help my opponent and I have very little control over what’s in his field in this format. I do not want to turn my opponent’s Giland into a Double Breaker menace any sooner that it has to be one.

Rating: Low

Torpedo Skyterror

This is a decent 5 mana creature. Torpedo has 4000 power with an increase while attacking for each tapped guy you have. So, if you want this guy to become a bigger attacking threat, then attack with a different creature first. I likely wouldn’t bother doing that unless I wanted to use it to overrun something big. Not impressive, but decent for this format. Weight your other 5 mana choices, but it’s a solid pick.

Rating: Medium

Slaphappy Solider Galback

This is another great Turbo Rush creature for the format. When the Turbo Rush requirement is met, this guy gets to nuke a 4000 or below creature when it attacks. Since there is few straight creature destruction spells in the set, this is a nice bonus. With 3000 power it can be a bit harder to kill.

Rating: High

Rocketdive Skyterror

It’s non-Aggro so it’s a re-useable kill card. Nice thing is your opponent’s creatures can’t attack it, so he’ll have to waste some type of removal effect or a blocker if he wants to keep it from slamming your 6000 and below threats. A useful card, but hurt by its inability to contribute to the offensive and having nothing to do unless you’ve been attacked with something it can hit. Evaluate your other 4 mana options before committing to this creature.

Rating: Medium

Missile Solider Ultimo

I’d pack it simply because it’s 3 mana. But, its Turbo Rush effect is also a nice incentive. When the ability kicks in it can attack untapped creatures and gains 4000 power. It can be used to pummel threats costing more mana than it, or overrun small defenses.

Rating: High

Magmadragon Melgars

Nothing special, but it’s decent. 4000 power can take out a lot of creatures. Also, it’s evobait for those scary Dragons.

Rating: Medium

Kyrstron, Lair Delver

Okay, it has a crappy cost-to-power ratio. So, you’d only pick it if you are running a decent amount of Dragons or just had the crappiest pulls ever. It’s a nifty way to get a Dragon evo into play. Have it ram something small and then evolve your evobait. Your opponent will want to kill it at some point, because it can break a shield, but he’ll pay dearly for doing it if you have a Dragon in hand. Then again, if you have no hand then this guy isn’t a good trump card. It’s a pick that depends heavily on your other options.

Rating: Medium

Furious Onslaught

This spell is way too narrow for my tastes. It only applies to Dragonoids. There are only 3 Dragonoids in this set. Two of them are Rares. If you pull some Dragonoids you might give this a whirl, but I just see this as hitting the mana zone more often than not. It’s playable, but why bother if you don’t have a nice compliment of Dragonoids to go along with it.

Rating: Low

Brusier Dragon

5 mana for 5000 power, and its Dragon evobait. It’s nothing special. But, it sure does have a dangerous drawback. When it’s destroyed you have to nuke one of your shields. So, your opponent could just attack it with something bigger to gain a shield break when it’s tapped. Requires careful play if you run it, and I don’t see the need to pack it unless you are running evos and want to pack a lot of evobait.

Rating: Low

Magmadragon Jagalzor

Bomb Fattie Alert. 6 mana for 6000 power and double breaker is nice in Sealed. Based on that alone I’d give it a High rating. But it also has a killer Turbo Rush effect. When its effect activates, each of your creatures in the battle zone has Speed Attacker. So, it as long as something else breaks a shield, Jagalzor will turn newly summoned creature plays into immediate attackers until the end of that turn—including itself. You’ll likely only need to use that effect once to seal a game. That is just sick in this format.

Rating: High

Überdragon Bajula

It has Triple Breaker, 13,000 power, and toasts 2 mana each time it attacks. It has so many effects that can downright kill your opponent and shut him out of the duel. How can you not love this guy? If it surfaces = game over unless your opponent has Sasha out. Problem is getting it into play. So, if you want to play with it then pack whatever evobait you can, and other support like tutoring, drawing, and mana gain where you can.

Rating: Medium, only because it requires evobait

Fire Summary

# High: 4
# Medium: 5
# Low: 3
# Unplayable: 0

We’re looking a many solid picks from Fire too. Again, if you’re more a risk taker then you might want to play with some of the Low rated picks. And, you are able to drop Bajula, then please let me know. J
