Duel Masters Top 10 Spooky Cards

By Lee Sandow, the guy with too much spare time

Hello, it is I, Lee Sandow, back again to give you my 3 cents on which cards are the best of the best in Duel Masters.  Why 3 cents you ask?  Everyone gives his or her two cents, but I’m going the extra mile.  I figured that extra penny was nice symbolism… and now I’m off topic.  In honor of Halloween, I decided to review the 10 spookiest cards in Duel Masters.

Naturally, I will be judging these cards base on their image, flavor text, name, and effect.  So naturally, it goes without saying that this list is composed entirely of Darkness Creatures and Spells.  And now, cue the spooky music, and let the creepy countdown begin!

10:  Stinger Worm (Base Set)

This guy is just scary.  The image is a dead carcass with a bug coming out of his head.  Creepy, made only worse by his effect, which forces you to sacrifice a creature just to summon him.  He’s a parasite in it’s truest form… parasites scare me!   Finally, his flavor text:  When worms kill a creature, they can still make it move.  Icky…

9:  Black Feather, Shadow of Rage (Base Set)

You are required to sacrifice a creature to summon this guy, and this ghost seeks vengeance for the lost monster.  His haunting image, which is a formless being in dark clothes with a skull like mask over his face, is startling to look at.  He is sticking a claw like hand toward the viewer… he wants your soul!  Flavor Text:  He has none, so I’ll make one up:  He’s back, in black.

8:  Horrid Worm (Evo-Crushinators)

He looks like a brain on a stick protruding from a mass of decaying flesh.  I don’t know about you, but that’s just NOT an image I like to keep in my mind.  His effect is nasty, as he hurts your resources (your hand) every time he attacks.  Finally, his flavor text shows just how this worm lives its life:  Worms never refuse a good meal.  They never refuse a bad meal either.

7:  Soul Gulp (Shadowclash)

The only spell on this list, this image is just haunting.  A dark sky, cut through with lightning, with a sinister face apparently sucking up all the light.  Creepy to look at, and very suiting to the effect he has, which involves destroying a player’s hand (if they use light).  Flavor text:  The first victim of the war between light and dark was the sky.

6:  Giriel, Ghastly Warrior (Rampage)

He’s holding a big-honking sword, and has a huge, ugly mask on.  He has teeth and mouths all over his body; even his nipples have teeth.  His sword is so large it extends off the screen, and he is a powerful attacker who can kill almost anything in the game.  Flavor text:  Peasant or king, he cares not who its next victim is.  It cares only that its victim is warm… and very, very scared.

5:  Bone Spider (Base Set)

A giant spider, which is already dead, with his arms spread across the picture, dragging you towards him.  He is made completely of bone, which is funny, considering spiders don’t have bones.  He is good for one attack, which is all right since his opponent will die with him.  He is spooky in his flavor text:  They can wait forever, for they know they will not die alone.

4:  Writhing Bone Ghoul (Base Set)

Another living dead joins us on our happy haunt, and this one is just plain disturbing to look at.  He has no eyes, just a look of intense pain on his face, and it has many, bony legs.  Not something I’d want to bump in to in a dark alley (or a brightly lit one, for that matter).  Flavor Text:  Seeking power, they gave up their intelligence.  What they found was pain.

3:  Poison Worm (Evo-Crushinators)

Here we have a giant worm (a real turn off), secreting a slimy orange substance from its clawed head.  Lovely.  His body is long and spiked with thorns, with steam rising from some places.  He feeds upon his own comrades, if they are too weak.  I am afraid of this picture.  Flavor Text:  “You won’t get any dessert until you finish eating your friends!”  - Dark Titan Maginn.

2:  Jack Viper, Shadow of Doom (Rampage)

He’s a snakelike, skeleton ghost with big, clawed hands.  His image (Awesome art) just instills fear into me.  His effect is scary to go against.  Suicide monsters are back again, and killing his creatures proves fruitless.  Is this eternal life worth the cost?  You be the judge.  Flavor Text:  Has it conquered death, or just replaced it with something worse?

1:  Gigargon (Base Set)

I’ll be honest.  Gigargon won because he is the only Duel Masters card ever to give me a nightmare.  That’s right, he gave me a NIGHTMARE.  He was also the very first foil card I ever pulled.  He is a many headed mass of parts compiled from god-knows-what, sitting in a rainstorm.  The detail on this card is just amazing.  The steam coming out of his mouth is just the perfect touch to instill fear in me just at the sight.  Flavor Text:  There is no rest in the Dark Realm, even after death.

So there’s my top 10 list, for spookiest cards.  Agree with me, think I’m insane, or just wanna chat about Duel Masters?  Email me!  rebellee1187@msn.com ‘s place to do it.  I look forward to hearing from you.
