Mono-Blue Bounce Rocks Joshua (DK) Weisbrod-Torres Pat's Games (www.patsgames.com ) Austin, Texas February 12, 2005 11 people 5 civilizations tourney report (sorry for it being late had other stuff to do).
This is my first tournament report and I would like to say if this is bad ignore it, but if it is good then let me know. Well where I live (Killeen, Texas) the only Duel Master players are my family. This been my mom, dad, and sister (Janice). Since there is no local gaming store that has tournaments for Duel Masters, we go to Austin to Pat's Games. I go there sometimes to play Duel masters and sometimes for Magic. I get up at 8:00 and start to get ready. We leave around 9:00 because the tournament starts around 11. We sign up (I got the blue hat. I wonder why?) I found out that the tourney is 3 rounds cut to top two because there are only 11 players.
Round one: DK vs. I think his name was James- he was new and had a 100 card deck. He was playing blue/white.
Game one: He got all white blockers out quick so I had to cast Paladin and then got him in one attack. 5-0 shields 1-0 Game two: He somehow got quick attacks but I finally got enough stuff like guards and hulcus etc. to hold him off until I get my paladin and lancer to take him out. 3-0 shields 2-0
Some of the players I talked to the last time I was there had come to play. There names were Joel (ranked 2nd in Austin) and David (ranked 3rd in Austin). Joel and I played in the finals both of the last two times I had came so, I know he was going to be a challenge So here comes round two (My mom won 2-0 and it was her first tourney. I was happy.).
Round two: DK vs. David - Black/White control deck using Ballom and Alcadeias.
Game one: I knew against this deck that I would have to win fast because if you give him enough turns he has board control. I win on turn 8. Turn one, guard. Turn two, vehicle. Turn three, hulcus. Turn four, serum. Turn five, hulcus. Turn six, jolter. Turn seven, lancer. Turn eight, paladin sealed the deal. He had like 6 blockers out and that was it so I had this game. 5-0 shields 3-0 Game two: I just lost this one bad he Alcadeiased 7th turn and all I had was spells in my hand. I had no way to counter till the turn after I lost I would have drawn a unicorn fish. 0-1 shields 3-1 Game three: He had to put Trox, Ballom and Alcadeias in his mana zone so he could at least stand a chance but my army out did his in the end and delivering the final blow with Paladin. 4-0 shields 4-1
So I went and watched my mom's game and she made a few mistakes (she was playing mono-red agro human) but pulled it out. My sister (Janice) was not having so much luck getting called time with fewer shields (she was playing mono-white blockers w/cutter) she lost that game and they ended up drawing. Making my record 4-1, my moms 4-0, and Janice's (0-1-1). There where three undefeated players, and only one round to go. The three undefeated where me, my mom, and Joel. Round 3: DK vs. a new kid playing the tin red/black deck
I found out that he beat my sister and with what you ask? Purple Piercer. Which I did not expect so I did not build anything to counteract around his card and that is why she lost.
Game one: His deck was poorly built because he was just starting to learn how to play. So quick attacks won this game.5-0 shields 5-1 Game two: Same as game two, just this time he got mini-titan gett. 3-0 shields 6-1
So after the round I looked at his deck and gave him some rares cards and changed his deck for a better all around games. So, after this I went and watched my mom finding them playing game three. She lost but because he had the good hand for what he was playing. So now is the cut to top 2 being me vs. Joel.
Finals: DK vs. Joel playing blue/green agro Evo (with 3 or 4 Obsidian Scarab)
Game one: I was nervous. My opening hand was 2 fish and 3 spiral gates. *How does that happen? I thought I was going to lose. This deck has never seen a hand like that* I went first and drew guard. And from there it went up hill drawing hulcus and draw cards. And winning with the final attack with aqua bouncer (I know you are thinking what? but yeah aqua bouncer the 6 casting cost blocker with bounce and can attack). 2-0 shields 7-1 Game two: He got a good hand. I had 1 tribe, 1 scarab, 1 hulcus, 1 gate, and 1 barkwhip. Everything in my hand cost 5 or 6 making me slow to react to things. 0-4 shields 7-2 Game three: All he had was high casting cost things and he miss played by playing Scarab after I bounce it. This slowed him down every time he played it again and I finally won this game. 3-0 shields 8-2
Yeah I won.
Props: Winning this 24k tourney. Getting a box of survivors and getting all but 2 cards. Finishing my survivors set. Awesome new corile. Mom getting 3rd place . Dci skyrocketing me to 18th in Texas. Pat and Turbo for running the tourney. A new shiny plaque that will go on my wall of awards.
