Duel Masters Tournament Report
Steven Cantrell There was no tournament last week because an ice storm kept everyone stuck in their houses. So rather than going to the tournament I spent time testing my Black/Blue control deck and made a small modification. (First one to notice what the difference is from my first report wins a cookie.) And now I present my deck, henceforth known as Murky Riptide: Darkness [20]
4x
Bloody Squito Water [20]
4x
Aqua Guard Today was a normal, DCI sanctioned tournament. My ranking had somehow slipped to 27th in Georgia, but hopefully that would change for the better. My deck isn’t the most exciting, but its well-rounded and incorporates hand destruction, field control, and draw power. Plus making people topdeck is just so much fun. :) Round One: Vs RobertRobert just started coming a few weeks ago but I think he played at a different store before. So we’re about to start dueling when Justin says he has to redo the pairings because a few people didn’t hear him call to signup. I still dueled Robert anyway for fun but we didn’t get to finish. Round One Again: Vs Tyler SmallwoodOkay, now for the real first round. This is the guy who I lost to in the last tournament. He was using the same Evo deck but with Ultracide Worm added. My outlook wasn’t very good but I could not afford to take zero points in the first round. Both duels were about the same. His evolutions (mainly Barkwhip) did a decent amount of damage but Terror Pits showed up in the shield zone multiple times. Corile took care of his evolutions over and over which screwed up everything for him. The second duel was much closer, but all I can say is that Crystal Lancer is the schiznit. Record: 2-0/2 Points Round Two: Stephen (Slak) Stephen has been here a long time and he usually places in the middle of the pack. This week he was running Black/Red destruction if I remember correctly. This match was over quickly and Stephen just didn’t put up much of a fight. In the first game my hand was bad with 3x Locomotiver, but I allowed his Gett to take a few shields to get better cards. From there I rebounded because his destruction could only be spread so thin. He did set me back with a Searing Wave a couple of times, but his offense was lacking. He only pulled out Valdios once and I Pitted it before major damage was done. So I moved on virtually unscathed. Record: 4-0/4 Points Round Three: Patrick Smallwood Patrick is Tyler’s older but not quite as skilled brother. Coming into this match I was pretty confident that I could beat his Obsidian Scarab deck and move on with six points. The first match was just as I had predicted and I was able to shut down everything easily. The next duel, however, hit a bump in the road. Patrick had everything going for him this time. He got a large hand, plenty of mana, and Nexus set up in his shields. I managed to fight back and get him down to zero shields but it wasn’t really that close. He delivered the finishing blow with Obsidian Scarab, which was starting to annoy me. That loss took me by surprise so I vowed not to underestimate him again. The third duel of our match turned out to be dead even until I topdecked an Aqua Guard, evo’d, ended the duel. Record: 6-1/6 Points Round Four: The Almighty Lee Sandow So after a close call to get here, I would now face the one and only Lee Sandow. Justin (tournament organizer) lost 2-1 to Patrick Smallwood in the other match of importance this round. That meant that whoever won the epic battle between Lee and I would win the tournament. It’s Go time! Lee was very determined because I beat him in the last tournament. He came out strong in the first duel and shut down my hand. I was topdecking (and not very well) for a while so Lee took a well-deserved win. The next duel was down to the wire but I somehow scraped out a win after getting a bad opening hand. So the tournament came down to the final duel, with everything on the line…And he drew a really cruddy hand. I took my time, set up the field, and owned the whole duel from turn one. Better luck next time, Lee. Record: 8-2/8 Points The Aftermath: So I won my second tournament ever, w00t! I got 4 Survivor packs, 3 Evo-Crushinator packs, and some cool sleeves for winning. Now if only I can win the REAL tournament next week…. Props: Winning the Tournament Nice Prize Support today Lee for being a good sport even though he didn’t get his revenge Nice Trades to get all the Survivors I needed My parents will drive me to the 5 civs next week (at a different store) Slops: Only one foil in all seven packs of my prize packs Justin for making us wait between matches because he was eating lunch This is only the second of hopefully many more tournament reports you can look forward too. Once again my name is Steven Cantrell. Contact me at Smcman7@aol.com or AIM Smcman7 and my username on the Realms is Thrash-494. I’m open to challenges on DMC and any comments on the deck or whatever. |
