Hello my
pojo comrades! I missed the last tournament report, but not much happened
anyway, so here’s the next installment of my tournament report series. Today,
we get pictures!!! I just got a 4 mega-pixel camera the other day and I decided
to test it out.
The day
started out alright. Nice, rainy day. That’s the kind of weather we get around
here. Anyway, I got there around 11. People were already there, and I was doing
my usual routine of finding decent trades. I was pumped for this tournament. I
won the last 5 civ in my age bracket, and I was hoping to get another plaque to
go with my other one. The tournament was structured in 4 rounds of swiss style,
and the top 8 play off in a single elimination. There were 19 players in total,
pretty good for a tournament, but not too great for an event like this. Anyway,
here’s the deck you all know and love…

Here’s our…um…uh…”beloved” judge, Jeremy, testing out a survivor deck
before the 5 civ. |
Ok, the first round was starting and nerves were at high. Everyone knew what they had to do to make top 8. The stage was set, and we were off
Round 1- Nimbly vs. Clay P.-(Blue/Red Block Rush deck)
Game 1- This game tricked me up. Lots of rushing, lots of shields breaking, lots of blocking, yea it was great. Oh, wait…I was on the other side of this. Wha???
I got rushed. The deck built for rushing got rushed and blocked to high heaven. At the final point in the game, he had 6 attackers out. I had a valdios and rikabu in my hand, 2 attackers already, and he had 3 shields. Nice right. Wrong. I only had 6 mana. Yea, if I had 1 more, it would have been over, but what can you do…
Shields-(0-0)-Winner-Clay
Game 2- This one was the same as the first, only I had more rushing and he was more on the blocking side. This game was closer. I took control early, but he ended up with a groblav that swept the field. I was about to nail all of the shields, but a spiral gate to my validos swept my field one turn later. Oh, yea, did I mention that I had no shield triggers at all both games?
Shields-(0-2)-Winner-Clay
Well, that just about sucked. One, for losing right of the bat. Everyone at the tournament was surprised, but probably relieved in a way. I was beginning to worry. I need 3 in a row to get a guaranteed spot in the finals, as losing first round probably doesn’t give great tiebreakers for the 2-2 people. Anyway, that was unexpected. Everyone I knew had won, which was upsetting. The next round was ready to go, with my camera in hand…
Round 2- Nimbly vs. Nathan H.-(multi-color deck. High costs)
Game 1- I beat him down quick. Braid Claws and Brawlers took care of the early
goings, while rikabu batted clean up. The only care he really played was a
rothus when he got enough mana. I kinda felt bad about this match…
Shields-(5-0)-Winner-Nimbly
Game 2- This one was kind of the same. He did manage to get out a Resos pacos that actually beat up some of my humans. This card would become a Ladia later on. Too bad it was too little to late. A rikabu and an army of small stuff took out the rest of the shields.
Shields-(4-0)-Winner-Nimbly
That round was comforting, knowing that I have 1 win under my belt. I still need 2 to go for that 3-1 record. Since we finished early, I went roaming with my camera. Yea, that thing got some mileage put on it. The pressure was on. Only 2 was so close, yet so, so far away. After the second round, the judge handed out hats, and I got my green one, after only so many months of waiting.
Before the next round, The owners began to talk about the next round and who was playing. The owners were beginning to talk some stuff, and I was wondering why. It’s pretty cool how they interact with the players so well. Anyway, the next round was up
Round 3- Kaitlin E. (the owner’s daughter)-(Yellow blockage/ Alcadeias deck)
I chuckled a bit, now knowing why everyone was talking about the match. It all comes together. She was already undefeated going into our match, and with a yellow deck and a large library of cards to work with, I knew I had quite the hill to climb here. In addition, this was a no win situation. If I lost, I would probably not make the top 8. if I won, then I just beat my bosses’ daughter. Things are grim for ol’ Nimbly…
Game 1- This game was slow- moving. I rushed her quick and got her down to 1 shield by the time she just busted out an alcadeias. Then came the blockers…I hate blockers, sooo….much. Anyway, the alcadeias started to attack and I had some squitos and oozes to hold her off for a while. While that was going on, I kept busting out some cheap monsters. She got out a hanusa and urth on her final turn. I drew a rikabu and another one from the shields. I had 8 potential attackers, she had 6 blockers, none of them La Byle, the one who gets continuous blocks. The last shield she had….not holy awe. A close one.
Shields-(0-0)-Winner-Nimbly
Game 2- She played less blockers this time. I got out a Valdios and got some quick 2 shieldage early on in the game, thinking that if she did get a blocker, it would be weak. Soon enough she gets a gran gure. I didn’t bother to attack to not kill Valdios, and pass that turn. The next move she did. She holy awed my monsters and killed Valdios with a gran gure. That was the last straw for me. To kill my monster by blocking, that’s one thing. But to kill a monster by attacking with a blocker. That’s it. It’s on. I got out some rikabu and brawler, while drawing a bunch of criticals and smokes. The game ended with a hit with a marrow ooze.
Shields-(3-0)-Winner-Nimbly
Well, I won that one, so that makes 2-1. I need this next round for the guaranteed spot. I knew I was also playing someone who wanted the same spot, so the tensions will be high.
Round 4-Michael H. (Light Alcadeias/ blocker Deck)-for some reason, there were a lot of these. I guess Alcadeias really is as broken as it is shown…
Game 1- I had the early attack going with braid claw and a rikabu. He got out sentinine jade tree and blocked a couple. He eventually got out 3, not 1 or 2, 3 aeris, which is amazingly annoying if you use darkness monsters. To make things worse, when I had the chance to have 2 attackers more than he had blockers, I had somewhat of a chance. I got to 1 more twice. Then he either screaming sunburst or holy awed and wiped out the field. *sigh*…
Shields-(0-1)-Winner-Mike
Game 2- Now I was nervous. I need 2 games in a row, against a deck I know I can lose against. This game however, was a major yoink on him. I got out the cheap stuff. He got out some blockers, and a had the critical blades to stop him. Yea, this was a beat down. All tied up. It comes down to one final game.
Shields-(5-0)-Winner-Nimbly
Game 3- This game was close. I got out 3 braid claws late in the game, when he
had the blockers to stop them. It took a while to get the alcadeias out, so
that gave me some time. I got out Valdios and took out 2 shields. He busted out
a gran gure and stopped my attack in my tracks. He got out Alcadeias, and my
heart dropped into my stomach. He had a lot of blockers, so there was no chance
for a comeback. I was done. This game was over
Shields-(0-3)-Winner-Mike
Well, after the whole tournament, I went 2-2, very sub-par for my normal performance. I talked to the judge, Jeremy, and he said that only one person with 2-2 will move on to the top 8. I knew it wasn’t gonna be me, but I had to keep some sort of faith. I just knew that my tiebreakers weren’t too great, as getting a win off of Nathan, the eventual last place finisher, would kill my TBs.
The top 8 and bottom 11 prizes were announced and given. The top eight included:
Justin S.
Gustaf H.
Shane M.
Robert H.
Kaitlin E.
Michael H.
Those were the 7 already guaranteed a spot. The rest of the people was announced starting backwards from 19 to 8. By the time I got to it, it was the last 3 to be announced. 10th place…goes to….Andrew.
Well, I didn’t make it. My friend James did get the final spot, since he won the first round and got better tiebreakers by playing better people. Eh. What can you do? I got a pack and a pack of sleeves, plus 4 corile promos:)
Here’s the rest of the pictures that I took:
The final 4: The
players were oddly paired to face the person that they are competing against
for the plaque in their age bracket. The left side did the damage. |
Here’s the plaque for the 5 Civ. Cool huh? |
Here are your winners of The Rainy Day Games 5 Civilization
Tournament: 14 and under- 15 and over- Michael H.-(Light Alcadeias/ Blockade Deck) |
Ok. The 5 Civ is over. Not the greatest tournament for me, but I’ll try to do better the next one. The next major tourney for me would be the next Neopets Release on Feb. 26, ironically in the same format as today. That weekend should be interesting.
Saturday-Neopet release tournament- Duel Masters draft
Sunday- Flaming Eternity Pre-Release event.
Time for the props and slops-(these might be long..)

That was our 5 Civilization tournament. All in all, a pretty good day. I had to go to work right after the tournament, after getting some lunch next door. So playing in a cool tourney and working on the same day. It’s really bittersweet, isn’t it?
From all of us at Rainy Day Games, I leave you with a picture of all of us. Until next week, Later Days from Nimbly.
Do I really need a caption for this? I mean, it’s pretty
self-explanatory. Here’s everyone that participated in our 5 Civilization
tournament. We are a diverse group, that’s for sure. Hey, if you live near by
