Tournament Report
Steven Cantrell
Galactic Quest in Lawrenceville, Georgia
Saturday, July 16, 2005
Five Dollar Entry Fee
Fourteen Duelists
Four Swiss Rounds
Welcome to yet another of my tournament reports! This one
covers a regular Saturday event held at Galactic Quest down
in Georgia. Let me clarify what’s going on right now: The
first of two Invitation Circuits will be held on July 30th.
Justin Florio, Stephen Fordham, Matt Gracek, and of course
myself are the current favorites to make Top 4 of the
14under division. I have yet to decide which deck I will run
in the big tournament. My two best are both popular
controls, a tricky B/U/G and the U/B/R listed below. My
pending retirement from the game will likely come following
the continental championships in October.
Water [15]
3x Emeral
4x Hulcus
4x Corile
2x Illusionary Merfolk
2x Brain Serum
Fire [11]
4x Pyrofighter Magnus
2x Twin-Cannon Skyterror
3x Searing Wave
2x Apocalypse Vise
Darkness [19]
2x Bloody Squito
2x Propeller Mutant
3x Horrid Worm
4x Locomotiver
4x Proclamation of Death
4x Terror Pit
Total: 45
Mana Curve: 4.08 Mana Curve
We had another solid turnout today. Both Smallwoods and
Justin Florio were the only regulars missing. Since there
are two weeks left before the Circuit date, I planned to use
each deck once to see how they perform. The deck I went with
today has been updated slightly due to the release of
another expansion set.
Between rounds I was absorbed in the newly released Harry
Potter novel. (For future reference my favorite jam is
raspberry.) Unfortunately that left little time for note
taking, so don’t expect details up to the usual standard
this time. Now let’s get started!
Round One: Vs. Ramsey Payne (Red/Yellow Rush)
After not playing Ramsey for the longest time, we are now
paired up fairly frequently. This first round would be a
rematch of the opening round a few weeks back. I beat him
2-1 then, so my hopes were on a repeat performance.
This match is a complete blur. I remember he summoned Braid
Claw out on the first turn and never looked back. My hope
was that Emeral setting a Proclamation could slow him down,
but this turned out to be a bad move because I picked up
Terror Pit. My lack of blockers and his Speed Attackers were
the difference. He beat me again the second time in similar
fashion, though I did manage to put up a fight.
Record: 0-2
Cumulative Record: 0-1 matches, 0-2 duels
His key cards: Braid Claw, Pyrofighter Magnus, La Ura Giga
Round Two: Vs. Stephen Fordham (Red/Green/Black Aggro)
Stephen is the oldest of the three Fordham brothers, and one
of my future rivals in the upcoming Circuit event. He
finally ditched Black/Blue Merfolk for a more unorthodox
Speed deck.
Just a tip for anyone writing a report: take good notes so
you don’t regret it later. I can vividly remember his
Barkwhip attacking my shield which was Terror Pit, but
that’s about all. I think my Emerals continued their streak
of bad luck as well. We went the distance to three duels,
with me squeezing out a victory.
Record: 2-1
Cumulative Record: 1-1 matches, 2-3 duels
His key cards: Barkwhip, Pyrofighter Magnus, Rikabu the
Dismantler
Round Three: Vs. Justin Fordham (Blue/Black/Green with Awe)
Justin Fordham was borrowing my spare deck for this
tournament, so of course I wind up playing him. I could not
let my guard down, needing a win to move forward in the
standings.
Justin started off quickly with the majority of his cards
from the Nature civilization. He had about 7 mana on turn
five, but couldn’t use it to his advantage. His best play
was to summon a Thrash Crawler that stumped me for a while.
Later on my swarm took him out for the win. The next duel
was more of a struggle because of Justin’s triggers, but my
board control was good enough to win again.
Record: 2-0
Cumulative Record: 2-1 matches, 4-3 duels
His key cards: Bronze-Arm Tribe, Mana Nexus, Thrash Crawler
Round Four: Vs. Jason Marella (Blue/Red Rush)
Jason has been playing Duel Masters since the beginning. He
started coming to Galactic Quest about two months ago, and
has placed fairly high every time. Needless to say, I was
not at all thrilled to draw another matchup against Rush.
Jason rushed well to start the match. Thankfully a pair of
timely Proclamations turned up in my shield zone (even
though one was a Pit until I picked it up with Emeral). My
own Pyrofighter and hand control punished his resources. The
next duel was in my favor all the way. We got at least 10
turns into the game with me still having two shields left. I
started building up my field to kill him the next turn. Then
Jason topdecked a Twin-Cannon to steal the duel right before
I would have finished him. After that I took the final duel
of the match with ease.
Record: 2-1
Cumulative Record: 3-1 matches, 6-4 duels
His key cards: Pyrofighter, Kamikaze Chainsaw Warrior,
Hunter Cluster
Quote of the Day: Austin Ladshaw picks up his
five-card-hand, grins, and proclaims “I got a Full House,
what about you?”
The Aftermath: Lee ended up winning his first tournament in
forever by beating David Fordham in the finals. David and
Matt Gracek finished second/third ahead of me even though we
were all 3-1 on the day. That gave me the leftovers at
fourth place. Overall a good day, though I expect better of
myself. Looking forward to several BIG tournaments in the
near future.
Now for the grand total Emeral count: I used his effect
seven times today. Five of those picked up a Terror Pit and
the other two picked up Brain Serum and Locomotiver...Why
me?!
Props:
- A decent fourth place finish
- Winning one pack for good sportsmanship
- The Half-Blood Prince was excellent
- Everyone who helped me with the Thundercharge puzzle
Slops:
- Luck (Mainly involving certain Shield Triggers)
- The morons at WotC for changing the Championship date

challenge me to a duel (just not on DMC) or chat about the
game. Till next time...
