Tournament of the Five Civilizations - Murky Riptide - Steven Cantrell
T&T Toys in Duluth, Georgia
Saturday, April 30, 2005
Ten Dollar Entry Fee
Fourteen Duelists in 15+ Division
4 Swiss Rounds, Top 4 Cut

Sorry for not writing any reports from the past few weeks. My Duel Masters schedule keeps conflicting with soccer games, so I can not make it to tournaments very often. I also do not have any pictures with this report because my camera battery died at the store.

This past weekend was the Five Civilizations Tournament. Unfortunately, Galactic Quest is not the host store for these events. I got to T&T Toys around 12 o’clock to sign up, trade, practice duel, etc. My Murky Riptide deck (Black/Blue control) is unchanged since the Gamers Marathon a few weeks back.

Darkness [20]
4x Bloody Squito
4x Horrid Worm
4x Locomotiver
4x Death Smoke
4x Terror Pit

Water [20]
4x Aqua Guard
4x Aqua Hulcus

2x Crystal Paladin
2x Crystal Lancer
4x Corile
4x Energy Light

Total: 40
Mana Curve: 3.6

For those of you unfamiliar with my deck, the strategy is much like other Black/Blue control decks. I focus on gaining hand and field advantage for most of the game. The chump blockers allow me protection while doing this. Draw power is important for opening up my options.  When the time is right, my swarm of creatures (usually headed by an evolution) will destroy all the opponent’s shields at once. Simple and effective.

Round One: Vs Robby Myers (Black/Green)

Robby was a nice guy about 20 years old whom I have never dueled before. Before the tournament, he received some deck help from Justin Couch. His deck involved the standard Black/Green tools with Barkwhip as the centerpiece.

In duel one Robby rushed me down to two shields with an early Barkwhip. This usually is a good thing because it gives me a massive hand. From there Corile and Locomotiver took over to shut down his resources. I finished with an attack headed by Crystal Lancer and Horrid Worm. Robby summoned three creatures in our next game but did not attack this time. I set up my field without any resistance. At one point he managed a 6k power Crow Winger, but I promptly sent it packing via Death Smoke. Corile and Squito took apart his field piece by piece until the time was right. Then two Horrid Worms attacked his shields over a couple turns. This was not an overly difficult match.

Record: 2-0

Cumulative Record: 2-0 duels, 1-0 in matches

Round Two: Vs Travis Bouknight (Red/Black Destruction)

Travis was another guy in his twenties whom I had never met before. He seemed to know the game well and defeated Stephan Slack in the first round. Black/Red deckout strategies have done a good job of impeding my setup in the past. I hate playing against these decks for two reasons: A. They give you zero hand to work with. B. They make my creature kill absolutely useless. This should be a challenge…

Pure frustration. Our first duel predictably came down to him with zero shields and me having only ten cards left in my deck. Crystal Lancer was sitting in my hand without any Liquid People bait. I check my graveyard/mana and there are four Liquid People left between my shields and deck. A few minutes later he won when I decked out because three of them were in my shields and one was the bottom card of my deck. What are the odds of that?! The next duel I tried to overthink my strategy and ended up losing in horrific fashion.

Record: 0-2

Cumulative Record: 2-2 duels, 1-1 in matches

Round Three: Vs Chris Richter (Black/Blue Control)

Chris is a moderately skillful duelist. We clashed in the first round of the last Five Civs tournament, when he ran Diamond Cutter. This time around he tried a more mainstream approach with Black/Blue. Despite Team GQ’s advice before the tournament, he was not running any Corile.

Despite having to win at all costs, this match was more casual. At least for me it was. I managed to summon all four Locomotivers in both duels. All Chris could do was prevent the inevitable with Hunter Fish, Teleportation, and Spiral Gate. I patiently ran out his resources then attacked with a swarm of creatures as usual.

Record: 2-0

Cumulative Record: 4-2 duels, 2-1 in matches

Round Four: Vs Patrick Smallwood (Blue/Green)

Patrick is always a treat to duel against. Unlike his brother, he takes a less serious approach to the game but still presents a challenge. I had to win or there was no chance of making the Top Four cut after this round…

My notes on this game were terrible. All I can remember is that both duels were along these same lines: He zoomed up to 10+ mana through Bronze-Arm Tribe, Faerie Life, etc. Then Patrick kept using Energy Stream to ruin my hand control. Even with plenty of mana and decent hand size, he could not summon any significant threats. Control won out in the end despite really not controlling him very well.

Record: 2-0

Cumulative Record: 6-2 in duels, 3-1 in matches

Top Four Semifinals: Vs Justin Couch (Red/Black/Blue)

Justin also plays Magic: the Gathering so he has a strong grasp of the concepts in Duel Masters. I did not expect a win coming into this round because Justin beat Lee earlier in the day.

My attempts to control were futile. His creatures all had “come into play” effects, making them virtually Corile-proof. Justin built up his field of creatures, wrecked my own field, and left me with nothing to do in both games. His own Corile and Meteosaur were too much to handle. The second duel was ended quickly by a furious onslaught of several Pyrofighter Magnus. Oh well.

Record: 0-2

The Aftermath:

I was eliminated in the semifinals like last time. My goal was met by making the Top 4 cut, but I really should have done better. My six prize packs contained Craze Valkyrie and two decent Very Rares. Lee Sandow and I then decided to duel once (unofficially) for the third/fourth place tiebreaker. I won but can’t remember what happened at all. The elusive plaque and 24 packs ended up going to Justin Couch. Justin Florio won the younger division by beating Stephen Fordham. In all, 7 of the Top 8 (from both divisions) are regulars at Galactic Quest.

Props:

Third place finish again (not bad)

Decent stuff in my prize packs

Justin C. and Travis for beating Tyler Smallwood

My DCI ranking is 4th in GA currently

The 15+ division was entirely Merfolk free

Slops:

Lee failing to get the plaque (yet again)

Andrew Frost forgetting his deck at home (borrowed my extra)

I hope you have enjoyed my tournament reports! Look forward to more pictures next time from Galactic Quest. I’m glad to discuss Duel Masters, strategies, and deck building anytime. My AIM is Smcman7 and email is Smcman7@aol.com. Happy dueling!
