Tournament of the 5 Civilizations - Stegy
Adam “Stegy” Trunzo
5 Civilization Tournament Featuring Stomp-A-Trons
Alter Reality in Lakewood, OH
April 30th, 2005
Around 25 in the 15+, around 30 in the 14-
Greetings, everybody! It’s been a while since I’ve written a
tournament report, huh? I guess living AN HOUR AND A HALF
from the nearest tournament would do that to you. It sure
was nice to play in another tournament, though; the
excitement of wondering who your next opponent will be, the
thrill of a good duel. Good times, good times. Anyway, I was
so excited to play in a 5 Civilization Tournament. I had
never actually managed to play in a 5 Civ., tournament
before, so I was prepared for anything.
I left my house around 1:30, and my wonderful mom drove me
all the way up to Lakewood. At a little after 3:00, I
entered the store and was blown away by the sheer amount of
people in the store. Everywhere there were players with ages
ranging from five or six years old to older adults playing
with their kids. The first thing I did was make my way into
the store and check out the competition. I saw how everyone
was filling out a deck-list, so I grabbed one myself.
Now, before I list my cards, I want you to know that I was
unable to obtain my 3x Natural Snare I needed to complete
the deck. I panicked over what deck to run, and made this
list right before I left my house.
Water/Nature Control
Water-20
4x Aqua Hulcus
4x Corile
4x Illusionary Merfolk
4x Emeral
4x Spiral Gate
Nature-17
4x Torcon
4x Bronze-Arm Tribe
4x Barkwhip, the Smasher
4x Mana Nexus
1x Natural Snare
Darkness-3
3x Terror Pit
Fire-8
4x Searing Wave
4x Pyrofighter Magnus
With my lack of Natural Snares, I filled the three spots
with Terror Pit. Yes, I would have dropped Snare altogether
and just played with four Terror Pit, but.. I don’t have
four Terror Pit. Yeah. =\
Anyway, after filling out my list, I casually walked around
the first half of the store, where the 15+ crowd was housed,
and checked out the competition. In all actuality, fairness,
and as kind as I can make it, I didn’t really see too much
to be worried about. Most people played Blockers, but only a
few had, at the most, three of a particular card. The 14-
crowd actually had better competition, and a handful of
players were playing with theme decks! It was crazy.
So, after waiting until 4 o’clock, the tournament began.
Now, as a warning, I only remember two names because it was
so loud in the room and the tournament organizer (awesome
guy, by the way) read outloud who was playing who. I just
sat in one seat the whole time and rose my hand whenever my
name was called. ;x
First Round: (forget name) with Disruptive Forces Theme Deck
[Oddly enough, I had helped him and a friend how to play the
game before the tournament started. Ironic, huh?]
Duel One: Not much to say here. He made a few errors, like
playing that Schusa dude when he had little shields and only
six mana, and not attacking my tapped creatures. Pyrofighter
did the work for me.
Duel Two: A got out a turn 3 Bronze-Arm, followed by a
Corile, then random stuff like Pyrofighters and Hulcuses.
When I had two Shields left and him none, he dropped a Snake
Attack with two attackers out. I actually panicked, but the
two Shields he broke were a Spiral Gate and a Terror Pit.
[1-0]
Second Round: Rudy with Nature/Light
[Rudy was a real nice guy.]
Duel One: I dropped a Hulcus turn 3, got a nice hand six,
and started a Pyrofighter Swarm. On his sixth turn, he
managed to drop a Ladia Belle (I think that’s right) on one
of his two Blockers. He hit a Terror Pit and a Corile (I
believe), so I destroyed the Ladia Belle. I Corile’d him
next turn, and it was game a few turns after that.
Duel Two: He only managed to play maybe three Blockers, and
one of them he evolved into Ladia Belle, again. I had set a
Terror Pit with an Emeral a few turns earlier, and he picked
that Shield. =D I won shortly after.
[2-0]
Third Round: (forget name) with Water/Darkness/Light
[He was one of the older adults. He was running Emeral/Ill-Folk
with Pits, Slayers, and Blockers.]
Duel One: This was a fun duel. I built up a force of five
attackers, played a Spiral Gate on a lone Blocker, and
summoned a Pyrofighter. He didn’t have any Holy Awes in his
Shields. =D
Duel Two: This was one of my better duels of the day. I
think he dropped a third turn Senatine Jade Tree while I
dropped a Hulcus. At one point, he had that 3-1000 Slayer,
Candy Drop, and Senatine on the board. I Searing Wave’d. ;x
Just a few turns later he had no Shields, I had two
attackers with a Pyrofighter in my hand, and he taps his
Senatine to destroy one of my attackers, then scoops.
[3-0]
So, I’m undefeated going into the fourth round. The store
organizer announced that round four was going to be the last
round before top eight. My opponent was a kid around my age
and he asked if a draw was okay, because he was both working
AND playing in the tournament. I said it was fine, and wait
around. After close to half an hour, the top 8 is announced,
and I’m in third place (due to %).
TOP EIGHT: (forget name) with Mono-Black
[He didn’t say too much..]
Duel One: You know the whole ‘Searing Wave vs. Cursed Moon’
thing? Well, that happened in this duel. He thought that
only Cursed Moon would be destroyed, stating some Magic
terminology, and I said that everything with 3000 or less
power would be destroy because Cursed Moon dies first.
Luckily, the owner of the Alter Reality in Elyria was right
next to us, and he agreed with me. I don’t remember much
else, except that I won.
Duel Two: Needless to say, my opponent wasn’t that happy
(and I felt terrible). He was obviously not interested in
the duel, and I swarmed him pretty bad.
[4-0-1]
TOP FOUR: Fred with 5-Civ
[..he SEEMED nice..]
Duel One: Four words--I. Love. Pyrofighter. Magnus. I had
THREE in my hand at one time, and I was summoning them left
and right. Mized. ;x He also summoned a Pyrofighter, but it
was his only creature.
Duel Two: My opponent wasn’t very happy. He got, like,
nothing out, and I won pretty quick.
[5-0-1]
Get this: After I won, my opponent scooped up his cards and
STORMED out of the card shop (it was around 7:30 and there
weren’t a lot of people). During our match I saw him draw
extra cards and switch cards in his mana zone with his hand
when I played him. A few of the other players noticed him
cheating also. Not cool. >=\
FINALS: (kid I drew with in round 4) with
Water/Darkness/Light
[I watched him play another kid, so I knew what to expect.]
Duel One: His only Darkness card was Locomotiver from what I
saw. I won on my fifth turn, no joke. He didn’t get a single
Blocker.
Duel Two: He managed to put up a fight, getting a (Shields)
Locomotiver, Senatine Jade Tree, and a Corile. I remember he
played his Corile on my Torcon, and destroyed my Hulcus with
his Senatine when he had no Shields. Next turn I drew my
Torcon, thought for a few seconds, and realized that I was
holding a Pyrofighter. I was like, “Oh, duh!” and played
Pyrofighter for the win!
[6-0-1]
I went undefeated throughout the tournament. I felt so
proud. I got my plaque, box of Stomp (Jim, the store
owner/organizer, said we could swamp the box for any other
box if we wanted, but I stayed with Stomp), a choice of a
promo (I got Armored Goblav or whatever it’s called), and a
Snip Striker Bullraizer, but I forget the latter! ARGH! The
top three in the 15+ got our picture taken (Fred would have
been 3rd/4th, but he left), as did the top four from the 14
and under.
Here’s what I pulled from my box:
Daidalos, General of Fury
Bolmetus, Steel Dragon
Invincible Cataclysm
Invincible Aura
Invincible Abyss
Aeropica
Laveil, Seeker of Catastrophe
Lu Gila, Silver Rift Guardian
And a nice assortment of Rares.
Overall, it was a great day. I just can’t believe that I won
with a deck I threw together the day of the tournament. =D I
would like to thank Jim and all of the other store workers
for hosting the 5-Civ. Tournament, and for putting up with
so many people in the store. They really did a fantastic
job.
Well, thanks for reading my long report! If you want to
contact me in any way, my e-mail is Stegyman@aol.com .
Thanks again! =D
