$15 entry fee-10 people

Hey, everyone. This is my first tourney report for Duel Masters of a hopeful longer list in the future. I figured I’d give reporting tournaments a shot. And….here we go

The day was total crap. Weather-wise that is. In Oregon, it is fairly warm in wintertime. However, that night, a cold front collided with a warm front, making Saturday a cold day and loaded down with freezing rain. The ground was horrible, the entire city was covered with a blanket of ice. What was weird was that the next day, it was 50 degrees again. Weather sucks…

The tournament started around noon. I got there around 11:30, to trade and talk and all that stuff. Most of the people at the tournament were usuals, no one really new showed up that day. The same day, a mechwarrior tournament was also going on, a release tournament for the new set, Age of *something*, so the place was packed. I bought 1 pack of survivors, to test out the new stuff, and I pulled a king mazelan, so that was a cool start to the day.

For $15, you got 4 survivors packs to make 30-card decks in a draft format. For those unfamiliar with draft, we open packs, choose one card from it, and pass it on to the next person, which alternates from moving clockwise and counter-clockwise. After all packs are opened, the players then make decks out of them. Since there are 40 cards in 4 packs, you can make a 30 card deck with 10 cards that you don’t want to use.

So the draft started. 10 people were separated into 2-5 player pods. In my pod were

Me, Adam, James, Shane, and Mike.

Ok, enough of that. The packs were decent. Here’s the deck I created

Monsters

Darkness

1x Vashuna, Sword Dancer

3x Gigazoul

2x Skullsweeper Q

1x Wisp Howler, Shadow of Tears

1x Sinister General Damudo

Water

4x Solidskin Fish

2x Spikestrike Ischthys Q

2x Split-Head Hydroturtle Q

Light

1x Syforce, Aurora Elemental

4x Kulus, Soulshine Enforcer

2x Calgo, Vizier of Rainclouds

2x Gallia Zohl, Iron Guardian Q

2x Ballus, Dogfight Enforcer Q

2x Le Quist, The Oracle

3x La Guile, Seeker of Skyfire

Spells

2x Glory Snow

Total-34 cards

Ok. I was pretty confident in this deck, seeing as it has 5 double breakers in draft, which is amazing. The first round pairings were posted and we were on our way

Round 1

Nimbly Vs. Justin S.- (fire, darkness, and splash of yellow)

Game 1- The game was a beatdown. On turn 2 I had a Le Quist out and ready to go. I didn’t know he had red-black, which Le Quist owns up on. Soon enough I had out Kulus out. Le Quist taps a red or black creature, Kulus smacks it up. It was bad. The game ended with me taking the game with the Quist and a La Guile (double breaker)

Shields-(4-0)-Winner- Nimbly

Game 2- This one was a little closer. I didn’t have Le Quist out to rely on. He came out strong with a rikabu and a Blazesaur Q, to take out 3 of my shields out soon. I had Kulus take out his weaker monsters and soon Enough, La Guile bats clean up, and beats him.

Shields-(2-0)-Winner-Nimbly

So Round one went nicely. My other friend, Gustaf, also one, with this green-yellow deck. He showed it to me, and it seemed alright and really strong against me. He had a lot of monsters that get stronger with the opponent having more water and darkness monsters. Grrr…

Anyway, Round 2 was off without a hitch…

Round 2

Nimbly Vs. Justin F.-(yellow-and I think fire)

Game 1- This game I thought I had control of. We really didn’t attack each other until we both had a strong field. I got out La Guile, and then he did on his next turn also. He had no shields, 3 blockers and, what I thought 4 attackers, but Gigazoul can’t attack w/o shields, so I miscalculated, so to speak. He won the next turn.

Shields-(0-0)-Winner-Justin

Game 2- This came down to the wire. He had this cheap monster, 4 for 6000 that could take out my monsters easy when tapped(Ruthless Skyterror). Le Quist was useless in this game. La Guile for me came up early, and Vashuna also. As soon as he has about 2 shields left, he busted out 2 blockers and a La Guile on me. Evil. His La guile bumped heads with mine and Vashuna took the rest of his shields. The next turn, he ran out of blockers and Le Quist finished it.

Shields-(1-0)-Winner-Nimbly

Game 3- This game went a little faster, since everyone was waiting for us to finish. I had out most of my 3 cost monsters and Le Quist. He did get out a blocker, but was not enough to stop a wave of small cost monsters

Shields-(4-0)-Winner-Nimbly

I can’t believe I came out of that one with the win. La Guile has been bailing me out of these jams a lot. Gustaf won his round also. I think my friend James was at 1-1 at the time.

Round 3

Nimbly Vs. Adam H.-(yellow-green)

Game 1- This game I learned that Crow Winger really sucks. Wow. It was evil. I had almost all water and darkness the whole time, and that thing only got stronger. I was down to no monsters with his 2 crow wingers on the field. I top decked La guile after he broke a glory snow shield. I had 7 mana to burn. La Guile bails me out again.

Shields-(2-0)-Winner- Nimbly

Game 2- Crow Winger sucks. I had all high level cards in my hand and he busted out some cheap stuff, quick. He had some 3’s out and then busted out Moon horn, which I couldn’t believe was a double breaker, and of course, it has the crow winger effect. I drew the 3’s and 4’s, but it was too little, too late. He got me with cheap stuff and a La Guile for the finish. Yea, pain…

Shield-(0-3)-Winner-Adam

Game 3- Once again, everyone was waiting for us to finish. Yellow is really slow, so I didn’t know what they were to expect. I had a skullsweeper Q wipe out his hand, then I used Vashuna to take out some shieldage. He had a La guile and a blocker ready to stop Vashuna and my skullsweeper, as soon as I had him down to no shields. Eventually I finished it with a syforce.

Shields-(2-0)-Winner-Nimbly

Once again, It had to come down to game 3. I hate game three. It’s real nerve-racking. Moon Horn took me by surprise, how a card that decent is an uncommon. I figure that Gustaf has some in his deck also.

Round 4-THE FINALS!

Nimbly Vs. Gustaf H.-(yellow-green)

Game 1- this game was a beatdown. Picture this

Turn 2- La Quist

Turn 3- Calgo, Vizier of Rainclouds

Turn 4- Kulus

Turn 5- Vashuna

Turn 6- La Guile

Beat..down. This game ended as soon as it started

Shields-(4-0)-Winner-Nimbly

Game 2- Did I mention Crow Winger Sucks? Well, it does. And it took out all of my quick monsters. I had no la Guile or Vashuna to help me out this time. Oh, yea, he also brought out this beast of a monster, Nocturnal Giant. Yea, triple breaker, 14000 when attacking. It shocked me when I found out it was a triple breaker. This game was over with 3 attacks.

Shields-(0-2)-Winner-Gustaf

Game 3- This game looked like the first one. Really the same, as I had Vashuna and La Guile out quick, thank you glory snow. He had more blockers this time, but he ran out and played a Nocturnal giant as his final move. One turn to late though. I took this game and the tournament.

Shields-(3-0)-Winner-Nimbly

So I took first, Gustaf got second, and Justin S. got third. Everyone who got top 4 got a survivors pack with the bonus item everyone got, a special DM binder thing with checklists of each set up to the next one, Stompatrons of Invincible Wrath, great name. In my binder were 3 Twin-Cannon Skyterror promos. So after the tournament, I traded alright. I got every very rare of the set, yet no supers.

Well, after the tournament, started my shift at the store, which I recently got a part-time job for, so I got front-row tickets to the chaos of the mechwarrior tournament.

Ok, for the Props and Slops

Props

Winning the Draft

Getting all of the very rares in the set after the tournament

Getting a cool binder to put my sets in

For La Guile, who pulled me out of the fire several times too many

For Rainy being a cool store.

Slops

Not getting a super rare

Getting only a very out of the draft

Mike pulling 2 Death Cruzers

The binder didn’t have an evo checklist. What’s up with that?

The store being really crowded

The cold front giving the city a blanket of ice on the weekend. Seriously, is it too much to ask to have that kind of weather during the weekday?

Well, that’s my release tournament. Pretty good for me. I got my 4 Rikabu for my Red-Black deck, which I’ll show you next week for the next tournament. If you have any comments, concerns, complains, whatever, e-mail me at

pt_1bc_2@yahoo.com

or you could PM me on the Pojo Message Boards. Don’t use AIM. Mine’s all screwed.

That’s it. Thanks for reading. I’ll be back next week with the results of the next tournament. Until then, Later days…
