Duel Masters Invitational
Circuit - Johnny Blaze
Time Warp Comics
Cedar Grove, NJ
July 9th, 2005
30 participants
Ok so this is the 2nd Invite tourney that I have
participated in this year. We also went to Origins this past
July 4th weekend but I did not participate in that tourney.
My son did and I was surprised that for an Open Invite
Tourney there were only 16 players. That is pretty sad that
any age could win a trip to the Continental Championship in
Los Angeles and only 16 people showed. For the Cedar Grove
tourney there were only 11 in the 15+ division and about 20
in the 11-14 age bracket. So there would be a total of 5
rounds in each age division with a cut to the Top 4 for each
age division.
We really need to do something to improve attendance at
these things because you see DuelMasters is one of my
favorite TCG’s and it is fast paced and fun and yet it is
still strategic. I’m afraid that if the numbers don’t
improve we wont see much more big things instore for Duel
Masters in the years to come. So get some of your friends or
family to play this great game. Enough of that on to the
report. I decided to run a Fire, Dark, and Water rush deck
that also concentrated on creature destruction/manipulation.
Here is the list that I used:
Fire - 14
4 – Pyro Fighter Magnus
4 – Tornado Flame
2 – Twin Cannon Skyterror
2 – Metal Wing Skyterror
2 – Burst Shot
Darkness - 15
4 – Locomotiver
4 – Terror Pit
4 – Proclomation of Death
3 – Ghost Touch
Water – 11
4 – Aqua Surfer
4 – Emeral
3 – Corile
40 cards total
Round 1 vs. Bill
Bill was using a Mana Nexus deck with a bunch of Shield
Triggers. I think his main attackers were Nature with Bronze
Arm Tribe accelerating mana. He got me game 1 and then I
rushed him Game 2 before he could really get anything set
up. Game 3 was back and forth and ultimately him using Mana
Nexus and reusing the 2 Holy Awes in his mana zone was my
undoing. Bill wins 2-1.
Record 0 – 1
Round 2 vs. David
David was using a Fire and Water deck with a splash of 4
Terror Pit. I was able to outrush him Game 1 to win. Game 2
was close as he had some decent Shield triggers to slow me
down but in the end my creature destruction and I used Metal
Wing Skyterror to destroy his blockers to win. I won 2-0
Record 1-1
3pts.
Round 3 vs. Danny
Danny was using a Nature acceleration deck and got the best
of me Game 1 when I couldn’t get any thing good from my
Shield Triggers and his EarthStomp Giant just couldn’t be
stopped. He got it out so quick with all his mana
acceleration. Game 2 I was using mad bounce to bounce his
EarthStomp and other creatures. At 1 point he kept on
drawing the Earthstomp as I would Corile it back on top of
the deck for 3 turns in a row. I end up winning Game 2 as I
also got out 2 Fighter Dual Fangs. Game 3 was all about
creature destruction. I kept on destroying his creatures
with spells and attacks and then it was easy sailing for me
to take out his shields with little effort. I won 2-1
Record 2-1
6 pts.
Round 4 vs. Lisa M.
I remember Lisa from Origins 2004. Her Dad and bro. also
play. Lisa is now in the 15+ division and was the only girl
player today. Lisa’s family has been playing DuelMasters
since it came out and they are all really great players and
nice to deal with. Lisa was playing a Nature/Water deck with
a splash of Terror Pits. The 1st game Lisa couldn’t really
get much going. She did get a quick Barkwhip but hit the
Terror Pit that me Emeral replaced. Then I go for the rush
with 2 Pyros and a Twin Cannon to win. Game 2 was much
closer as she got some blockers out and was hitting mana
acceleration like crazy. What did her in though was that the
last Bronze Arm Tribe she played her Fighter Dual Fang was
placed in the mana zone. If she would have hit that most
likely she would have won. My next turn I top deck a Twin
Cannon Skyterror for the win.
Record 3-1
9 pts.
Round 5 vs. Joe M.
Joe is Lisa’s brother and is currently the only undefeated
player in the tournament. I told you they were good players.
Lol I ask Joe if he wanted to ID as then we would both be
automatically in the Top 4. Joe declines as he is against
ID’s so we play it out. Joe is using straight Water. Game 1
is very close and if I didn’t miscalculate with a Burst Shot
I would have won it. Unfortunately I misplay and drop the
Burst Shot into my mana on Turn 1. The reason he won is that
he topdecked a Crystal Lancer for the win. But my Metal Wing
Skyterror was keeping his blockers off the board so that my
other attackers could break in. Joe wins Game 1. Game 2 was
much worse for me. I start with like all 5 and 6 cost cards
in my hand and really don’t see anything until after he drew
like a zillion cards with Aqua Hulcus, Brain Serum , Jet
Stream and all the other 1337 draw cards he was using. Lol
He pretty much pwnd me on Game 2 and Joe won 2-0.
Record 3-2
9 pts.
So we know that the top player Joe is in with a 5-0 record
and then the other two 4-1 players are in. There would be
only 1 3-2 player that makes it in.
So its not me. I end up in 6th place. Joe’s dad Michael
actually makes the 4th spot and Joe goes on to win the next
2 matches and he stays undefeated all day long. Congrats
Joe!
My son Nick makes the Top 4 in the 11-14 and loses in the
1st round. So he winds up in 4th place. Here is the 11-14
winner – Matt.
