Duel Masters Tournament Report

Galactic Quest in Lawrenceville GA - Steven Cantrell
Saturday, June 4, 2005
Five Dollar Entry Fee

Nine Duelists
Four Swiss Rounds

This tournament did not look promising when I arrived at Galactic Quest. Lee, Matt #2 and I were the only duelists for a while. Finally some more people came in so we could get started. Then this guy who runs Anachronism (some new TCG which I have no interest in playing) starts complaining about his tournament not happening. So Kyle, the owner of GQ, gives in and lets him start Anachronism first. I had to sit there for another hour in boredom until the Duel Masters tournament finally started.

After all that, I decided to use my Black/Blue/Red control over the other deck featuring Craze Valkyrie. Here is the decklist:

Water [16]

4x Emeral

4x Hulcus

4x Corile

2x Illusionary Merfolk

2x Brain Serum

Fire 10]

4x Pyrofighter Magnus

2x Twin-Cannon Skyterror

4x Searing Wave

Darkness [18]

4x Horrid Worm

4x Locomotiver

2x Ghost Touch

4x Proclamation of Death

4x Terror Pit

Total: 44
Mana Curve: 4.0

Round One: Vs. Matt Gracek (Green/Blue Triggers)

Matt is what you could call the resident idiot at Galactic Quest. His skill, or lack thereof, is rather embarrassing to have representing Team GQ during major tournaments. I thankfully do not end up playing Matt very often.

Duel one did not start well. He rushed with Barkwhip and Crow Winger before any of my kill spells could come out. My only choice was to rush him back, but I hit a Holy Awe to end the attempt. The next two games Matt managed to rush again. This time my control setup worked like a charm. He still got me to just one shield, but a swarm lead by Horrid Worm(s) took him down.

Record: 2-1

Cumulative Record: 2-1 duels, 1-0 in matches

His key cards: Barkwhip, Crow Winger, Mana Nexus, Holy Awe

Round Two: Vs. Patrick Smallwood (Yellow/Green/Black Evolution)

Patty borrowed my extra deck because he currently did not have one assembled. I was glad to have drawn this matchup, because I obviously know how to beat my own deck.

The first duel was quick and clean. Horrid Worm tore apart his shields and an opposing Barkwhip met my Corile on three separate occasions. He tried to weenie rush me the next time. I took control of the board, partly thanks to a nice Searing Wave. Patty got me down to one shield then stalled out. I swarmed the field to take his shields over the course of two turns. I was also dictating every move to Patrick and telling him what to do just to annoy him. All in good fun.

Record: 2-0

Cumulative Record: 4-1 in duels, 2-0 in matches

His key cards: Craze Valkyrie, Rumbling Terahorn, Magris

Round Three: Vs. Tyler Smallwood (Yellow/Blue Mana Deceleration)

Tyler built a new deck with the potential to be very nasty. He tries to swarm the field with cheap Light creatures, and then blast your mana back with Hydro Hurricane. Not a new idea really, but no one has ever tried it here.

Tyler ended up forfeiting the match because his strategy was not working. His main weakness was having too many high-costed cards. We did get about 10 turns into each duel though, so I can still summarize what happened. Hand control was the key to stopping him. I played Loco, Ghost Touch, and Horrid Worm several times each to really slow him down. His field did not last for long either thanks to Searing Wave and Corile. Tyler only pulled of two minor Hurricanes throughout both duels. Better luck next time I guess.

Record: 2-0

Cumulative Record: 6-1 duels, 3-0 in matches

His key cards: Phal Eega, La Ura Giga, Brain Serum, Hydro Hurricane

Round Four: Vs. Lee Sandow (Black/Blue Control)

Lee and I were the only duelists still undefeated at this point. We settled in for the final match, with major tournament and DCI implications on the line.

I agreed to play only best of one because Lee had to leave quickly. The duel looked bleak when I saw my opening hand. Everything cost four mana or above. Luckily my draws kept getting better as the duel progressed. My hand advantage from taking the second turn payed off too. Pyrofighter, Horrid Worm, and Corile all worked nicely together. His best move was a Lost Soul to discard my medium sized hand. Lee could only manage Aqua Jolter and a Crystal Paladin after that. He had to rush before I killed him, but fell short. Lee left right after our duel ended, but not before showing me the Bolmeteus he pulled from his prize pack. You better take good care of it! J

Record: 2-0

Cumulative Record: 8-1 in duels, 4-0 in matches

His key cards: Crystal Paladin, Lost Soul, Aqua Hulcus

Store owner Kyle wanted to duel me in a match after the tournament. When I manhandled his petty deck 2-0, he didn’t take the loss easily. Kyle switched decks and I still won several convincing matches in a row. That’s what you get for wasting my time earlier...

The Aftermath:

My undefeated record was good enough to nail down first place in the tournament. It’s kind of funny how my only loss the entire day was the first duel. Lee ended up getting second, Kyle placed third, and Ramsey took fourth. The prizes were pretty nice. Kyle basically asked everyone what promos they wanted and gave them out.

Props:

Winning the tournament

Getting four of the Locomotiver promo cards

Playing Lee in the finals (and beating him)

My DCI ranking went up since last week, now 1760 pts.

Slops:

Slack, Ladshaw, Florio and the Fordhams didn’t show up

Anachronism guy for interfering with Duel Masters

My retirement from Duel Masters lies just two months away for reason out of my control. In other words, my parents are sick and tired of me playing card games. I need to start saving my money too rather than blowing all of it. The Invitation Circuit on July 30th will likely be last tournament. Hopefully I can win the trip to Los Angeles and go out with a bang. Until then, my plans are to continue using this deck.

That wraps another tournament report. I may miss the next two tournaments, but do not expect a report even if I can go. Once again, my name is Steven Cantrell and you can email me at Smcman7@aol.com. Till next time...
