Tournament Report Steven Cantrell Galactic Quest in Lawrenceville, Georgia Saturday, May 28, 2005 Five Dollar Entry Fee Thirteen Duelists Four Swiss Rounds Water [16] 4x Emeral 4x Hulcus 4x Corile 2x Illusionary Merfolk 2x Brain Serum Fire 10] 4x Pyrofighter Magnus 2x Twin-Cannon Skyterror 4x Searing Wave Darkness [18] 4x Horrid Worm 4x Locomotiver 2x Ghost Touch 4x Proclamation of Death 4x Terror Pit Total: 44 Mana Curve: 4.0 My normal Black/Blue, dubbed the Murky Riptide, has been put into retirement. From now on I plan to switch every other week between this deck and my Craze Valkyrie deck. Whichever of those two does better will become my new deck for major tournaments. I am also glad to confirm that Galactic Quest will host an Invitational Circuit on July 30th. Before the tournament began, I played some practice duels to get an idea of how this new deck works. My record with “The Threat” ended up being 4-2, which I was fairly happy with. All the Team GQ regulars showed up even though attendance dropped from last week. Now onto the tournament! Round One: Vs. Ramsey Payne (Blue/Red) Ramsey is a nice guy that I enjoy dueling. He never places very high despite being one of the more skillful duelists here. That’s probably because his deck choices are usually more fun than competitive. Anyway, onto the action... We both started off with bad hands. Ramsey drew tons of cards with Serum and Hulcus to get going quickly. I could just manage to keep his hand in check, so we stayed even midway through. Then I busted out Merfolk and started to break away. My Twin-Cannon dealt the last blow a couple turns later to claim duel one. Next game I got stuck with only four mana for a while. Meanwhile Ramsey pulled some tricks with Emeral and drew tons of cards again. For a few turns I really thought he would win. Then he started beating me down with several Pyrofighters, but 2 Locomotivers and a Ghost Touch made short work of them. Twin-Cannon led another winning swarm for me one turn before Ramsey’s last Pyrofighter would have killed me. Record: 2-0 Cumulative Record: 2-0 duels, 1-0 in matches His key cards: Twin-Cannon, Pyrofighter, Brain Serum, Emeral Round Two: Vs. Tyler Smallwood (Black/Green Control) This is the same guy who cheated in the Five Civilizations tournament. The same guy who ran Merfolk for over a month. The same guy who I do not at all enjoy dueling against. I had Tyler corned and was dictating the pace of the duel both times. Right when I start to build up my hand for the kill, he decides to drop Lost Soul. Screw me out of win number one why don’t you. In the next duel, I had him down to two shields with Twin-Cannon and Emeral on the field. He set one of the shields (Serum) with Mana Nexus before. All that matters is the other shield being crap so I can win. It is of course a Natural Snare. Tyler finished the duel to beat me again by luck. Oh well. Record: 0-2 Cumulative Record: 2-2 duels, 1-1 in matches His key cards: Vampire Silphy, Mana Nexus, Mighty Bandit, Horrid Worm Round Three: Vs. Stephen Fordham (Black/Blue/Green) Along with Patrick Smallwood, Stephen is one I duelist I seem to wind up playing very frequently. We also played a practice match beforehand that I took two games to one. His main weakness is going first when using a control deck. I prefer going second with control because card advantage is often better than time advantage. Suit yourself Stephen. The first duel was mine somewhat easily. Hulcus and Horrid Worm came out together early on. I would have Hulcus break a shield, then Horrid attack to destroy the card he just got from his shield. Not much trouble. The second game was harder because Stephen pulled off a Merfolk or two. My hand control worked very well though to prevent too much damage. I won mainly thanks to a couple well-timed Searing Waves. Record: 2-0 Cumulative Record: 4-2 duels, 2-1 in matches His key cards: Fighter Dual Fang, Corile, Merfolk, Locomotiver After this round I went over to watch another match finishing up. Mr. Sandow kept sending David Fordham’s Merfolk back to his deck with Corile. Then David would play Merfolk again and again to amass a huge hand. The whole time Lee was just waiting to drop Lost Soul. In the end David had to discard his eight card hand and ended up losing. Good times. Round Four: Vs. Justin Couch (Black/Blue/Red) Justin won the last Five Civs tournament in the big boys division. I believe he ran a slightly modified version of that deck in today’s tourny. This match would not be easy to win... My notes were bad here so forgive me. Both duels ended up being fairly similar. All that really mattered was who could get their Pyrofighters and control the other’s Pyrofighters. I admit that I caught a few lucky breaks, but my hand control really pwned his. The match ended in my favor quickly. Record: 2-0 Cumulative Record: 6-2 in duels, 3-1 in matches His key cards: Pyrofighter, Locomotiver, Ghost Touch, Crimson Hammer The Aftermath: Top five standings went like this: Florio won with Phal Eega/Future Slash deckout. Second place was Tyler Smallwood using Black/Green control. I finished third place today. Austin Ladshaw was fourth with Blue/Red rush and Lee Sandow came in fifth using Black/Blue control. Today was a successful tournament as far as I’m concerned. Unfortunately, Kyle (the owner) only gave out 15 packs to split between thirteen people. Can you say cheap? Props: Getting third place behind only Smallwood and Florio Buying 4 Terror Pits for $10 Finding another new deck I like playing Slops: Terrible prize support happening too often lately Justin Fordham borrowed my extra deck and bent the cards a little In case you still don’t know this by now, my name is Steven Cantrell. Contact through AIM at Smcman7 or email at Smcman7@aol.com. School is out here, so I am available to duel against or chat anytime. Till next week... |
