DECK: Terror In The Deep
Hello and thanks for checking out my latest tournament
report, all you loyal readers of Pojo. Today was a fun and
intresting day, as well as exciting. I had been waiting for
this tournament for a month.
DECK: WATER
X4 Emeral
X4 Corile
X4 Aqua Hulcas
X2 Energy Stream
X2 Illusionary Merfolk
X2 Crystal Lancer
X1 Crystal Paladin
X2 Hunter Fish
X4 Aqua Guard
Total: 25
DARK
X4 Terror Pit
X4 Death Smoke
X4 Proclamation of Death
X4 Locomotivater
X2 Propeller Mutant
X2 Horrid Worm
X4 Bloody Squito
X1 Snake Attack
Total: 25
Deck total: 50
DECK STRATEGY: This a modified control deck. Now someone of
you may be scrathcing your head at why I choose to use Snake
Attack, but you'll understand later.
BEFORE THE TOURNAMENT: The tournament started a bit late,
but I dont remember. I was playing in the 14 and under
division, as favorites to get Top 4 also were, that
inclulded Stephen Fordham, Justin Florio, Matt Gracek, and
Stephen Cantrell. Everyone got their hands on their promo
Terror Pit and wanted more. Justin Couch I believe got over
6...Well anyone there were 22 people in the 14 and under
division, with 6 forty minute rounds.
MATCH 1: Brandon vs. Cameron
1: This kid ran a mono-fire deck built to rush. I was
confident going into this duel, knowing my deck had a HUGE
advantage. In turn one, he had a Deadly Fighter Braid Claw,
and managed to break a shield. By turn three he had three
Braid Claw's, but they were alkl dealt with with
combinations of blockers and attacks. I used Snake Attack
and finished him off.
1-0
2: He started summoning Braid Claw's, but I had Aqua Guard
in my hand. He managed to break one shield before I Coriled
his Onslaughter Triceps twice in a row, and he played it
both times, giving me a nice mana advantage. The duel ended
after I picked off his shields.
2-0
So one match won. I managed to get some trading done for my
next deck, which debut at the Tounrament of 5 Civlizations
two weeks from now. I was VERY unhappy when I saw who my
next opponent would be.
MATCH 2: Brandon vs. Stephen Fordham
Great. The best Fordham brother. He was using a CHEAP deck.
A deck-out deck with 87 cards. He got the idea from Florio
and basically copied his deck. I knew it would be hard to
win. The duel started slow, building mana. Every monster I
managed to summon was destroyed. I did however get few that
picked off his shields, but he built them back up with Mana
Nexus. I decked out after about 40 turns....sheesh!
2-1
The second duel was just as tough. It went back and forth,
while I picked off some shields. I HATE deck-out decks...I
managed to pull out a victory though, but just barely. I was
shocked I won that one.
3-1
The third duel was long and boring. All I can say was that I
decked out. One loss wouldn't hurt, but another one would.
3-2 in duels, 2-1, in matches.
MATCH 3: Brandon vs. Shaun
I had talked with him slightly before the duel began. He ran
somewhat of a deck out deck, red and black. He picked off a
couple shields with speed attackers, but were *unfortuantly*
(hint sarcasm) discarded from his hand. I used Snake Attack
and won the duel.
4-2
The second duel was the same, however he picked off more
shields. I was down to my last one, but I had saved Snake
Attack for this very moment. My creatures wiped him out.
5-2 in duels, 3-1 in matches
I managed to get a Bolmeteus Steel Dragon from Lee Sandow
but I traded a lot of Yugioh to get it. I didnt mind though.
It seemed to take forever for the next round.
MATCH Brandon vs. Boy
Sorry, but I forget this opponents name. He ran a mono-light
deck. HIs blockers were destroyed, however he did hit a
couple shields, but they were triggers. I managed to keep
his hand low and his field. I used Snake Attack and finished
him off
6-2
Theres not much to say. Just look up
7-2
MATCH 5 Brandon vs. Steven Cantrell
Great. I knew my chances were poor. Steven ran a weird deck,
which I cant remember, I think nature, water and dark with a
splash of Awe if my memory serves correctly. The first duel
I had him topdecking by turn three or four, due to the fact
he was using mana excel, and wasnt drawing cards. He got
Cyber Lords on the field and then Merfolks and the next
thing I know I have lost...
I am not gonna explain this duel. I drew FOUR Aqua Guards in
a row, followed by a Squito, which Steven kindly Coriled
three times in a row. OWNED! ...
7-4 in duels, 3-2 in matches.
My chances were poor of making Top 4, even if I won my next
match.
MATCH 6: Brandon vs. David Fordham
I was worried about this duel, but soon I felt a little
better. He took out a few shields but hit a couple triggers.
I restored order with Corile and few other choice cards. I
picked off his shields slowly and swung for the win
8-4
I believe this one went back and forth. He hit three shields
early because I had NOTHING in my hand to stop it. I managed
to restore order late in the game, where he had 5 shields to
my 1. I used Snake Attack and went for it....I hit triggers
and a Gregorian Worm, sealing my fate for this duel.
8-5
This duel went in my favor. I hit hard from the start,
wanting to get my spot in the Top 4, even though it was
slim. I whacked all his shields and attacked for the big 'V"
9-5 in duels, 4-2 in matches.
Overall I did ok. Turns out 4 people had a record of 4-2,
but they said someone did get the forth slot. I was standign
at the edge of the stairs as he announced them. First place
went to Steven Cantrell, second to Matt Gracek, third to
Justin Florio. He paused...then continued, Brandon Schmidt!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!! I did it! I made Top 4! I nearly fell off
the stairs as I was cheered by the other three. I was set to
face Steven, in a match I woul of d never forget...(cue
dramatic music...)
TOP FOUR MATCH: BRANDON VS. STEVEN CANTRELL
Let me say Steven is an AWESOME duelist, but I had to match
that. We went head to head for a long time. We picked off
shields as we went. I ended up topdecking Aqua Guards again
(I swear it sucks). I lost this one.
This duel was CLOSE. We went head to head, destroying
everything each other had on the field and hand. I figured
out how to beta him though. I tried rushing and it worked. I
got his down to two shields, me 1. He had two Thrash
Crawlers and three attackers and all I had was Aqua Guard,
but a Crystal Paladin in my hand. I miraculosly won this
duel, and swore that if I beat him a would jump on the table
and start singing.
I started rushing, which worked for a while. He got Nexus's
and his shields were back, and he had just slipped out a
victory. He was sweating though, so I know I gave him a run
for his money, which almost worked. I now had to play Matt
Gracek for 3rd/4th, while Justin Florio went against
Cantrell.
TOP FOUR MATCH: BRANDON VS. MATT GRACEK
I knew I had a chance against Matt when we began the duel.
It started off slow, building mana. I rushed in with weenie
creatures, luckly hitting few triggers. I used Paladin to
get the big win
The second duel went in his favor. He killed some creatures,
but I rushed and won. I couldn't believe it. I wont reveal
who won between Florio and Cantrell, so wait for their
reports. The four of us went to the front of the store to
get out prizes. 1st place recieved a paid trip to Los
Angelas, ,a box of Thundercharge, a bracelet, and a Duel
Masters DVD. Second place recieved an Invite, and half of
box, same with third place(me). Matt got 6 packs. Me and the
second place winner split the box and I got soem nice pulls
and some nice trades so I am not complaining.
