Subject: The Controller at Comic Chest, VA- Christian
This is Christian with another tournament at Comic Chest in
VA, which happened on September 3rd. This is our store's
first DCI tournament and I really needed to up my ratings.
Today we had a solid turnout of 14 people, including Sean
Castor, the #1 player in Virginia.
This is also the first time in just about forever I decided
to run something besides Black/Blue. I have since changed to
a BUG deck for the use of Cryptic Totem and some other good
cards found in Nature. And now for the Decklist...
The Controller
4 Aqua Hulcus
4 Corile
4 Emeral
4 Illusionary Merfolk
2 Thrash Crawler
4 Bloody Squito
4 Locomotiver
4 Terror Pit
2 Lost Soul
4 Bronze- Arm Tribe
2 Crow Winger
2 Cryptic Totem
4 Mana Nexus
Now with the decklist out of the way, let's get to round 1!
ROUND 1
VS. Carl (Red/Black Armored Dragon)
Game 1- Why is it Carl and I get paired up in every
tournament? We were even paired up at the invitationals.
Game 1 went smoothly enough. He tried to set up a force with
a bunch of creatures, but my two Coriles stopped all that.
Also, I got shield triggers and cards I needed from my
shields which helped me wrap up game 1. WIN
Game 2- This is where the problems started. I got out a
field ready to swarm him and thought I had this game in the
bag. I guess I was a little to hesitant with attacking, as
he soon made short work of the blockers I had assembled for
defense via Critical Blade and took the game. LOSE
Game 3- I got Cryptic Totem out early in the game and
started busting his shields. His blockers became a serious
annoyance at one point, but after three consecutive turns of
attacking, I was able to pull off a win. WIN
Record after Round 1- 1-0 in matches, 2-1 in duels.
ROUND 2
VS. Wes (Mono Blue)
Game 1- Okay, first off, I think Wes is a pretty good player
and I really respect mono water as a decktype, but sorry
dood, you're going down :P. This game was actually pretty
close, but he couldn't really gett going for some reason as
I set up a huge force. After it was big enough, I started
attacking and won by using Cryptic Totem. WIN
Game 2- I just waited until I had a force big enough to kill
him, and busted out Totem. Again, I wiped him clean under
Cryptic Totem. WIN
Record after Round 2- 2-0 in matches, 4-1 in duels.
ROUND 3
VS. Mike (Mono Black)
Game 1- Mike was playing darkness. I got a bunch of
creatures out early on and summoned Cryptic Totem. He, to my
great dislike, pitted my totem in an attempt to stop my
swarm, but I still had enough creatures on the field to kill
him. WIN
Game 2- This game went along the same lines. Mana Nexus
greatly helped at replenishing my shields when he broke
them. I got a few weenie creatures out and started picking
away at his creatures until I was able to win. WIN
Record after Round 3- 3-0 in matches, 6-1 in duels.
Well, it was pretty obvious who I wasgoing to face in the
final round of the tournament, there was only one other
undefeated player at this point, Sean. That's saying
something for multi- civ. decks, as Sean and I were the only
players running more than two civilizations.
Round 4
VS. Sean (Pogiforce_14 on Realms) (Blue/Black/Red/Green
Control)
Game 1- Okay, here you must forgive my lack of good notes,
when you're playing the number 1 player in a state, you tend
to be a little nervous, and I needed to concentrate on the
game. All I can remember about the first game was that it
was dangerously close and we kept swapping control. Finally,
I was able to scrape a win with Cryptic Totem. WIN
Game 2- I tried the same strategy again but Totem was pitted
not long after he was summoned. He said he got a bad hand
and shields because he didn't draw many fire cards, and I
was able to scrape yet another win. WIN
Record after Round 4- 4-0 in matches, 8-1 in duels.
The top 4 was announced- I was in, Carl was in, Sean was in,
and Sean's sister Amber was in.
SEMIFINALS
VS. Carl (Red/Black Armored Dragon)
Game 1- Now I needed to beat Carl in order to have a shot at
first. Like all Armored Dragon decks do, he got out Cocco
Lupia and attempted to summon one pf those beasts. He
finally managed to brung out Bolzard Dragon, but by that
time I already had Cryptic Totem in play and was able to
pull off a win. WIN
Game 2- I was confident going into the second game, but this
time he got Bolzard out a lot earlier and started screwing
with my mana. Since I didn't have enough to play anything
powerful, I wound up losing this game. LOSE
Game 3- There isn't much I can say here, I was trying to put
up a fight, until my imminent defeat hit the field in the
form of Bolmeteus... LOSE
Well, congratulations on handing me my first defeat, Carl.
Too bad it had to be in the semis...
FOR 3rd PLACE
VS Amber (Mono Blue)
Game 1- Amber is Sean's sister, so I was expecting a serious
challenge from her. Basically, she just got a butload of
blockers out and then took the game with Crystal Lancer. 5
shields to none. Ouch... LOSE
Game 2- This game was almost exactly the same as the first
one. This time, after she got the blockers out again, she
opted for two Splash Zebrafish. I don't know why I couldn't
get them off the field, but I lost. LOSE
Well, fourth place isn't bad, and I'm happy with how my new
deck did today, so Ithink I will use it next week. Now for
props and slops!
PROPS
Sweeping Sean
Mom for being the TO today
Great turnout compared to what we usually have
SLOPS
Carl beating me in the semis and then losing to Amber
School starts on Tuesday
