“The Galactic ConQuest:  5 Civilizations”

Team Galactic Quest

T&T Toys, Duluth GA

2-12-05

Welcome to the MASSIVE Team Galactic Quest tournament report!  This report contains reports from nearly every duelist from Galactic Quest who appeared at Saturday’s five civilizations tournament.  So that you can keep up with this, I’ll announce each duelist and give his or her decklist, and then I’ll write out how each person did for each round.  Each different person will be color coded throughout the article.  In case you are wondering, this is Sandow writing this part.  The text below is that persons EXACT words, so if some of them don’t make sense, I don’t want to hear about it.

Lee Sandow

I’ll take the color white for myself.  After my humiliating defeat at the last five civilizations tournament, I had three objectives in mind for this one:  Procure as many Coriles as possible, destroy Austin, and win (in that order).  I was, of course, running the Dark Tide with some minor adjustments.  I was going to enter into the 15+ division.

Anyways, I drove up there with Ramsey, Austin, and Justin Couch in tow.  You might ask, why bring your best competition with you, Lee?  Because I want the challenge, I answer you.  How better to prove my skills?  Besides, no Austin means no revenge.

Here’s my decklist!

I am definitely not known for my articles, but I sure as hell don’t have to stop now!

Today I was actually pretty confident. Most of the people at Galactic Quest I could get through, and we were the ONLY real competition, so I was pretty much guaranteed a spot in the top 4.  I was in the 15+ division.  I came in with a good amount of lunch meal and I took into account what I read in a few articles, wearing my most comfortable clothes and eating a pretty good breakfast.

I got in a little later then I wanted to. I had some practice time in, adjusted my deck just a wee-bit before sign up sheets and took in a couple of deep breaths. Today would be VERY long.

Justin Florio

All right guys!  I’m back with yet another tournament report for all of you people to read!  Coincidentally, a lot of other players are also writing tourney reports, and Mr. Lee Sandow is combining them all!  So now, on to the report!

I arrived at T & T at 11:00 A.M. but the store wasn’t open yet. So, I went to Quick trip and got a slushy and a hotdog. I then went back, and Matt G. was waiting there, along with the Forham brothers. I wrote my deck list and waited for everyone else to show up. A lot of little kids showed up, as well as other Galactic Quest people (known as G Q ers AKA Team Galactic) such as Lee Sandow and Austin Ladshaw. I was playing in the 14 and under tourney. Well anyways, the tourney started at around 1:30. This is what my deck looked like.

A Rainy Night  (44 Cards)

DARKNESS CREATURES:  16

4x Gregorian Worm

4x Horrid Worm

4x Chaos Worm

4x Bloody Squito

DARKNESS SPELLS:  8

4x Terror Pit

4x Death Smoke

WATER CREATURES:  16

4x Aqua Guard

4x Aqua Hulcus

2x Crystal Lancer

2x Crystal Paladin

4x Corile

WATER SPELLS:  4

4x Brain Serum

So anyways, the tourney started, and I wasn’t really too worried. I didn’t see much competition, other than the infamous Tyler Friggen Smallwood. We all thought that the tourney was going to be his from the very start. And of course, Matt G, who I had never played, was there. He was supposed to be good.  Lee:  Don’t know where you got THAT impression.

Steven Cantrell

This weekend is the Tournament of the Five Civilizations, a special tournament held at a different location than my usual dueling grounds. Massive prize support was up for grabs and I wanted to get myself a share of it. Today would also have major DCI implications.

Team Galactic Quest started showing up around 11:30 and we all warmed up in practice duels. I was using my usual Murky Riptide of course (deck list to follow). I checked out what other people were playing and saw enough blockers to make a small modification.

Murky Riptide  (40 Cards)

DARKNESS CREATURES:  16

4x Gregorian Worm

4x Horrid Worm

4x Locomotiver

4x Bloody Squito

DARKNESS SPELLS:  8

4x Terror Pit

4x Death Smoke

WATER CREATURES:  16

4x Aqua Guard

4x Aqua Hulcus

2x Crystal Lancer

2x Crystal Paladin

4x Corile

WATER SPELLS:  4

4x Brain Serum

There you have my creation. The goal is to control their field and hand to limit my opponent’s options. Ideally the blockers provide protection while my creatures slowly chip away at the shields. Two Paladins were subbed in for extra blocker control. Enough with the talk, now the tournament begins!

Lee:  Wow, FOUR Blue/Black controls in a row.  I think our metagame is in a rut, guys.

Austin Ladshaw

This will be my first tournament report ever.  Some of you may know me, I am Austin Ladshaw, Lee’s most hated rival.  Three months ago I stole Lee’s victory from him at the first five civ’s tournament, and he is out for revenge.

For this tournament I would be using the same deck that Lee helped me build, a red and black deck called the Dark Incinerator.

Dark Incinerator  (44 Cards)

DARKNESS CREATURES:  15

4x Wailing Shadow Belbetphlo

4x Horrid Worm

4x Mongrel Man

2x Bone Piercer

1x Vampire Silhpy

DARKNESS SPELLS:  14

4x Terror Pit

4x Death Smoke

4x Dark Reversal

2x Lost Soul

FIRE CREATURES:  7

2x Brawler Zyler

4x Rothus, the Traveler

1x Scarlet Skyterror

FIRE SPELLS:  4

4x Tornado Flame

4x Crimson Hammer

The deck is ready, now it is time for the rounds!!!

Justin Couch

Lee:  If we ever do this again, I’m seeing to it that people write their introductions.  This is just starting to become annoying.  Justin traveled with us, but drove in his own car, simply following us.  Ramsey and I were worried, because we thought his car might explode at any minute.  No offense, Justin.  He did at least give me a decklist, and here it is:

Ramsey Forgottowritehislatname

Lee:  Ramsey didn’t write an into, and I’m sure not going to make one up for him.  I gave him a ride to the store, so he was proudly representing Galactic Quest.  Anyways, here’s his deck.  Finally, someone who wasn’t running Contol!!!

Deck  (48 Cards)

NATURE CREATURES:  14

4x Bronze-Arm Tribe

4x Torcon

4x Barkwhip the Smasher

2x Fighter Dual Fang

NATURE SPELLS:  10

4x Natural Snare

2x Enchanted Soil

4x Mana Nexus

WATER CREATURES:  16

4x Aqua Guard

4x Aqua Hulcus

4x Crystal Lancer

4x Corile

WATER SPELLS:  4

4x Brain Serum

LIGHT SPELLS:  4

4x Holy Awe

Tyler Smallwood

Lee:  Similarly, Tyler didn’t me write an intro either.  Further, he didn’t even list his deck.  However, I can tell you that it is a Green/Black deck.  He uses the usual green mana acceleration strategy, complete with Barkwhips and FDF (Which he borrowed from me), then uses killing spells and the parasite worms of the darkness cards to finish his opponents.  His personal favorite is his Ultracide Worm, which he was using today.  Aside from Florio, he is the only one in the 14 & under division to write a report.

Preamble!

Now that everybody has been introduced, let us get on to the tournament.  There were 16 people in the 15+ division, and something like 20 in the lower division.  The tournament began at 1:30 with everyone getting their AWESOME looking Coriles and hats, then pairings were announced.

For reference, I’ll give you the color key once more:

White:  Lee Sandow

Dark Blue:  Stephan Slack

Purple:  Justin Florio

Light Blue:  Steven Cantrell

Red:  Austin Ladshaw

Yellow:  Justin Couch

Green:  Ramsey

Orange:  Tyler Smallwood

Grey:  Narrator, no speaker in particular

Maroon:  Non-Team Galactic Quest Players

ROUND ONE:  15+

Lee VS Stephan

Lee:  Stephan was running a blue/black deck, which I am weak against, and he was also running MERFOLK in it.  I don’t like it when my opponent has a big hand.  I’ll just have to do something about that!

Stephan:  Lee is the best player at GQ. I haven’t won a game with him in roughly 5 months, so I knew this would not be pretty.

DUEL ONE:

Lee:  I lost my notes for this part, so I’ll be writing from memory.  Slack got off to a decent start, and I noticed something was fishy when he used Emeral but not it’s effect.  As I would find out in duel two, he was using it for Merfolk.  Fortunately, I quickly rushed him down in this round.  Still, it was close.  1-0

Stephan:  First match was pretty close.  0-1

DUEL TWO:

Lee:  He got off a Merfolk near the end, but fortunately for me, it was too little too late.  A well timed Lost Soul helped a LOT here too.  2-0

Stephan:  It came down to a couple of shield triggers both matches =/ I wished good luck to Lee as would probably break through the rest of everyone there.  0-2

Lee:  As it turns out, I hadn’t seen the last of Slack… (Cue dramatic music)

Justin VS Mushroom

Justin:  The name of Mushroom’s deck was SKEET your Mom.  It was a red black deck, with 43 cards.

DUEL ONE:

Justin:  Fighter Duel Fang with Brutal Charge rules.  1-0

DUEL TWO:

Justin:  Very close.  I topdecked a Mana Nexus at the right time.  2-0

Ramsey VS Adam Warner

Ramsey:  He ran a survivor deck.  He got me down to one shield both matches, but I won 2-0

Lee:  It’s not my fault he and Justin are brief and to the point.

Austin VS Jackson Theacpoalis

DUEL ONE:

Austin:  My opponent was using a Fire and Light deck that had no theme or purpose.  I got off to a slow start but as soon as I got Mongrel Man on the field I just overwhelmed him.  1-0

DUEL TWO:

Austin:  He made crucial errors of always going for my shields and never using his blockers to block?!?  NEWB!!!!!  2-0

Steven VS Chris

Steven:  This guy was maybe in his mid-twenties. I wasn’t sure what to expect but his Diamond Cutter deck turned out to be no problem.

DUEL ONE:

Steven:  Paladin was kind enough to show up twice in the first round and clear his blockers. Chris ran out of a hand so quickly that he was topdecking while he only had four mana! The only wrench thrown into my plans was a Holy Awe shield triggered.  1-0

DUEL TWO:

Steven:  Next duel an early Cutter took about three shields to boost my hand. From there the control (mainly Corile) kicked in and there wasn’t even a Holy Awe to save him.  2-0

Steven:  That was a good start that I wanted. Winning 2-0 in the first round gave me a cushion incase I lost the next round. Later on Chris bought ten Base Set packs looking for an Urth and didn’t get one, poor guy.

ROUND ONE:  14 & Under

Justin VS Shaun

DUEL ONE:

Justin:  This kid was not unknown to me. I knew he ran mono red, so I definitely knew I was going to win 2 – 0. He couldn’t rush me because I got Aqua Guards out on the field. My Horrid Worms picked off his shields one by one. He couldn’t touch me. I won, 2 shields to none.  1-0

DUEL TWO:

Justin:  Same thing pretty much. He couldn’t hit me much. He did hit a few shields with Mini Titan Gett, but I managed to destroy his hand with Locomotivers. I won again, 4 shields to none.  2-0

Justin:  So, with my record being 2 – 0, I was quite confident. My deck seemed to be doing well, but that was just a mono red deck. I saw that Slak in the other division lost to Mr. Lee Sandow, which didn’t make me too happy. LEE MUST DIE!!!

Lee:  I can just feel the love.

Tyler VS Philip

Tyler:  He starts by telling me he sucks.  He is running a mono-blue deck.

DUEL ONE:

Tyler:  I start by summoning my Torcons.  I had them coming out of… nowhere.  He ran a lot of bounce, and they were soon in my hand again, but in no time they were back out again.  With evo’s on my side it was easy to take down his shields.  1-0

DUEL TWO:

Tyler:  The second round ran the same as the first. 2-0

ROUND TWO:  15+

Lee VS Austin

Lee:  Oh crap, it’s Austin!

Austin:  Oh crap, it’s Lee!

Lee:  I’d wanted this match to come to I could get my revenge, but I was really hoping it wouldn’t come so early in the day.  Here goes nothing…

DUEL ONE:

Lee:  This was the most intense game I’ve EVER had in my life.  I had seven cards left in my deck, and Austin only had six.  I had already broken all of his shields, and I only had three left.   One was a Terror Pit, because I had used Emeral to set it earlier in the day.  The other two could be anything.  Austin had five attackers, and no blockers, while I had no hand or creatures.  He had Lost Souled my Evo’s, so I wasn’t going to be able to kill him with Paladin.  He attacked shield one.  It was the Terror Pit I had set, so I killed an attacker.  He had 3 attackers left.  Shield two yielded an Aqua Jolter.  He still had two attackers.  One attacked my last shield… and I used Terror Pit as a shield trigger.  On my turn, Jolter swung for the win.  3-0

Austin:  He couldn’t maintain any field presence and he had no evolutions left.  The duel was mine… wait… I only have six cards in the deck and Lee has seven!  This is it, my last rush at the shields.  Three shields to my five creatures.  Break!  Terror Pit.  Break!  Aqua Jolter.  There is no turning back now… I have two creatures and he has one shield… Break!  …NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!  Terror Pit!!!  I lose!!!  Curse you Lee, you and your insane luck!  What are the odds of that?!?  (Lee:  The odds were 3720 to 1, if you MUST know Austin.)  ONE CARD!!!  2-1

DUEL TWO:

Lee:  I lost souled his hand as early as possible, and then kept him topdecking for a while, especially with the help of Corile.  Later, I used Lost Soul again, but he managed to somehow recover the field advantage.  He had no shields left, though, so a one turn Paladin drop ended the duel.  This would only be the beginning of Austin’s Paladin Pwnage.  4-0

Austin:  Lost Soul twice and a Paladin to finish it.  You got your revenge Lee.  ONE CARD!!!  2-2

Stephan VS Chris

Chris was a very guy. Both matches I pretty much owned, but he got in quite a few shields in the beginning. If the kid ran a rush, I would have probably lost looking at the way he played this mid game-based deck so fast.  2-2

Steven VS Ramsey

Steven:  Ramsey is a regular at Galactic Quest and he’s one of our better duelists. I had dueled him beforehand and won both times, but these would count for real…

DUEL ONE:

Steven:  He took the first game easily, mainly due to Bronze-Arm followed by a turn four Corile. I eventually had eight cards in hand and not a single blocker to impede his progressing attacks. That duel took my by surprise and I knew a match victory was now unlikely.  2-1

Ramsey:  Steven runs blue + black.  We went all three matches.  In this one, I had complete control with a turn four Corile.  3-0

DUEL TWO:

Steven:  In the next game I got Ramsey topdecking while Corile made him draw the same card a few times. That duel went to me… 3-1

Ramsey:  We had a very close match!  3-1

DUEL THREE:

Steven:  But the third was not as favorable. I got into a sticky situation and tried to sweep his shields all at once…so of course I hit a Holy Awe.  3-2

Ramsey:  I won by getting Holy Awe as a shield and Drawing a Crystal Lancer.  4-1

Steven:  Oh well, you can’t win every match. Ramsey is a good guy so losing to him wasn’t that bad. From now on I would have to do better to make the cut. In another duel of importance, Lee took his revenge on Austin by winning two intense games.

Justin VS Will Dowdy

Justin:  Will was running a Red/Blue deck.

DUEL ONE:

Justin:  I overpowered my opponent.  3-0

DUEL TWO:

Justin:  I was playing around and he hit my Holy Awe early in the game.  3-1

DUEL THREE:

Justin:  Who did he think he was?  2 FDF 2 Cold.  4-1

ROUND TWO:  14 & Under

Justin VS David

DUEL ONE:

Justin:  OMFG! Yet another mono red! What kind of morons are these people? There is really no reason to tell the outcome of this duel, because we all know who won. And did I lose ANY shields? Nope.  3-0

DUEL TWO :

Justin:  Look up.

Justin:  Well this was very exciting… 2 mono red decks and my record was 4 – 0… this tourney seemed to be no challenge. You might get a kick out of this next match though, because I found it hilarious.

Tyler VS Steven Fordham

DUEL ONE:

Tyler:  He summong Hulcus and I summoned Bronze.  He hit some triggers.  I evo’ed, taking down two shields.  He Coriles but I double worm, he sadly Coriled the chaos (???).  I cleared the field and took out his shields.  My Ultracide led the squad.  3-0

DUEL TWO:

Tyler:  I start with my faithful Torcon.  He pairs me up with 1-2 creatures.  My worm hits the field to help me out.  I start my shield hitting mayhem, but he brings out Fang.  L  Chaos broke a Torcon, and I pit his fang.  When I smacked his shield, he Snared, but my field was crawling with critters.  My Evos win again.  Thanks Ultracide.  4-0

ROUND THREE:  15+

Lee VS Justin

Lee:  Oh goody, it’s Justin…

DUEL ONE:

Lee:  Swarmed with many creatures, all five of my shields were shield triggers.  I had him topdecking WAY to early in the game.  Obviously, he was stuck.  5-0

Justin:  I got rushed and started topdecking.  4-2

DUEL TWO:

Lee:  He broke my shields quickly due to an early rush.  Finally, I coriled in an attempt to save my life, but when I Coriled the Barkwhip, he already had a Beast Folk in his hand so I died.  His remaining shields were a Natural Snare, an creature, and a Mana Nexus anyways…  5-1

Justin:  He had no shields.  He Coriled my FDF but I had a Beast Folk in my hand.  5-2

DUEL THREE:

Lee:  I’m such an idiot.  I got him topdecking, then I STUPIDLY broke his remaing shields, which allowed him to summon a small army.  He ended up evoing, and I had NO SHIELD TRIGGERS.  Duel Fang took the win…  5-2

Justin:  I was topdecking but Lee stupidly re-supplied my hand by breaking my shields.  6-2

Lee:  Great.  Now I can’t afford to lose or I won’t make finals.  Nothing like that to add tension, huh?

Stephan VS Austin

Stephan:  Austin is going through a tough time right now. He is in one of those phases where he is trying to understand the game better, if that’s how you want to say it.  Both matches were excellently played and very close. Props to Austin for showing such damn good sportsmanship, even after not placing at all. (You still wound up with 3 packs, one of which I gave to you)  4-2

Austin:  Stephan was using a  Blue/Black deck control similar to Lee, and once again Crystal Paladin delivered the final blow.  2-4

Steven VS Joshua

Steven:  This was another guy in his mid-twenties that I didn’t know. His weapon of choice was a well-built blue deck.

DUEL ONE:

Steven:  Joshua started off good and even pulled of the Merfolk combo. I managed to get his hand size down to a comfortable level, but this duel was close on both sides. Eventually I swept his remaining 2 or 3 shields at once and he didn’t trigger any Spiral Gates to stop me. 4-2

DUEL TWO:

Steven:  The next duel, my personal savior showed up multiple times in the form of Corile. Towards the end Joshua had a few blockers out and Paladin earned his place in this deck by letting my bust through a formidable defense.  5-2

Steven:  Through the first three matches I did pretty well, but so did some of my best competition. Lee, Stephan, Justin, and Ramsey all had at least four points. Everyone thought that this next round would be the last before the cutoff, but the owner had to add a fifth round because of ties.

Ramsey VS James Roth

DUEL ONE:

Ramsey:  I had complete control first round.  5-1

DUEL TWO:

Ramsey:  I should’ve used Barkwhip to attack…  5-2

DUEL THREE:

Ramsey:  It came down to the final shield and it wasn’t what I needed.  5-3

ROUND THREE:  14 & Under

Justin VS Chubby

Justin:  I have a short story to tell you about this sorry excuse for a n00b. B4 the tournament began, this chubby kid said I could trade for his Corile promo. So, we did. Then, after the first round, he says, “Hey, give me my Corile back, or I’m going to kick your ass.” Now, I would like to know how he could kick my ass when I was taller than him. Now, how I figure, the only way he could kick me ass is if he made me pass out from the odor coming from his body. He was trying to stink me to death or something. These are the kind of morons that make me hate being in the 14 and under division. Next, he called me “short”. Now it was personal. This piece-of-sh**-smelly-n00b-losing-son of a biotch was going down!

DUEL ONE:

Justin:  He had been playing for a year and I had been playing for 3 or 4 months, so this little kid thought he was much better. He got owned using a blue/red deck. He sucked really really bad. He tried to rush me with Vorgs and Hulcus, but my Guards stopped him in his tracks. I won, 4 shields to none.  5-0

DUEL TWO:

Justin:  Pretty much the same way. Except this time, I just dominated the field. Anything he put down got destroyed or Coriled. I won, 5 shields to none.  6-0

Justin:  Yet another win, making me 6 – 0. While finishing off Chubby, Tyler Smallwood had finished off Matt G. So, it looked like I was facing Tyler in the next round… DUMDUDMDUM!

Tyler VS Matt #2

Tyler:  Matt said he’d give it if I let him lose 2-1, so that was that.  6-1

Lee:  That is IT!!  I’m not supposed to butt in like this, but HOW LOW CAN YOU GO?!?  This move was what most duelists call CHEATING and is severely frowned upon.  Here’s what the DCI has to say about THIS:

161.     Cheating—Bribery

Definition

A player attempts to bribe an opponent into conceding, drawing, or changing the results of a match, or two players attempt to determine the outcome of a game or match using a random method such as a coin flip or die roll. Refer to section 25 of the Universal Tournament Rules for a more detailed description of what constitutes bribery.

Examples

(A) A player in a Swiss round offers his opponent $100 to concede the match.

(B) Two players roll a die to determine the winner of a match.

(C) A player offers his opponent a card in exchange for a draw.

Philosophy

Bribery disrupts the integrity of the tournament and is strictly forbidden. Randomly determining the outcome of a game or match is also specifically prohibited. Please refer to section 25 of the Universal Tournament Rules to ensure the proper application of this penalty.

Disqualification without prize

Lee:  You two are SO going down the next time I see you.  Not in a duel, I am PERSONALLY going to reprimand you for what you did.  Tyler, you don’t DESERVE the second place you got.  I see this happened later, too, in the finals.  That’s it.  I’m not doing any more in this category.  Let it be known that both Tyler (Cheater), and Justin Florio made it to the finals, where Tyler suggested they split the prize.  Funny thing is, they both thought the other surrendered to them according to their reports!  Still, I think that was just Tyler B.S.ing, unwilling to admit he’s a coward duelist.  Congrats Florio.  Have fun watching your DCI rankings skyrocket Tyler and Matt #2, cause I’m gonna PERSONALLY see to it you don’t play at GQ anymore.  Cheerio!

ROUND FOUR:  15+

Lee VS Mushroom

Lee:  That having been said, let’s get back to the HONEST division.  My next opponent was Mushroom (Not his real name, btw) who was running a green/red rush.  I just LOVE rush decks (sarcasm).  I needed to win this one to make it to the semi-finals.

DUEL ONE:

Lee: I summoned all my blockers early and I got to go first.  He couldn’t get past my blockers, so I was free to smack him around at my leisure.  6-2

DUEL TWO:

Lee:  Well, in addtion to him going first, I pulled an expensive hand.  My shields never knew what hit them…  6-3

DUEL THREE:

Lee:  He made another good start, but I somehow managed to counter it with the help of some blockers and weenie attackers.  Still, it all came down to my last shield being a trigger, and it yielded Terror Pit.  Thanks Emeral!  7-3

Lee:  Well, there were now four people tied at seven points, and one guy had eight.  Since it was top four, we figured one of us was gone.  Since I had more losses than the others, I figured it would be me… WHATDAYA MEAN ROUND FIVE?

Steven VS Adam

Steven:  I saw this guy before with what I assumed to be his son. Adam looked somewhere in his thirties, just like your average comic store bum. He used a strange deck for such a serious tournament.

Steven:  Both duels went along the same lines. He rushed with Blazosaur, Smash Horn, and/or Rikabu to quickly destroy a handful of my shields. While I was gaining hand advantage, he was rapidly losing it. Locomotiver and Horrid Worm had a field day destroying his cards. The highlight of the match was when he had no cards in hand and only Smash Horn on the field…I corile’d it three times in a row, and no deck can comeback after THAT.  7-2

Steven:  I kind of felt sorry for the guy because, er, he didn’t respond to losing well. Adam threw a bit of a temper tantrum and stormed out. Then after that slightly disturbing match the owner of T&T makes us play a fifth round, just waiting to screw everything up.

Stephan VS Ramsey

Ramsey:  I had a repeat of the last match.  6-5

Stephan:  Ramsey surprised me greatly after beating me first match. He has shown a lot of improvement and is becoming a next Austin. The first match caught me by surprise, but I adapted quickly, roughly owning him the rest of the round.  6-3

Welp, I pretty much gave up. I had only 4 points and I knew everyone with 5-6 would move on. Fortunately… :)

AustinVS Micheal Bailey

DUEL ONE:

Austin:  My opponent was using a strange three color deck which I called the Patriots because it was red, white, and blue.  Just because you’re a patriot doesn’t mean you’ll always win.  3-4

DUEL TWO

Austin:  No matter what he did, he couldn’t maintain field presence.  4-4

Justin VS James Rath

DUEL ONE:

Justin:  2 Whips and three other creatures against 3 shields.  7-2

DUEL TWO:

Justin:  Lancered me through the heart.   7-3

DUEL THREE:

Justin:  Couldn’t draw a base creature to save my life.  7-4

ROUND FIVE (!):  15+

Lee VS James Roth

Lee:  Naturally, this WILL determine whether or not I make the semifinals, and I naturally have to face the undefeated guy.  Here goes nothing…

DUEL ONE:

Lee:  I won.  I don’t remember the details, but I did win.  8-3

DUEL ONE:

Lee:  He evo rushed me.  He ended up with a both FDF and Crystal Lancer on the field at once.  Despite having two terror pits as shield triggers, he killed me.  8-4

DUEL THREE:

Lee:  Much better.  I was able to get him topdecking, and he never fully recovered from it.  9-4

Steven VS Austin

Austin:  Not another blue/black control!!

Steven:  If you read any of the other reports from Galactic Quest you should know that Austin is both friend and rival of Lee Sandow. He struggled so far today after trying out a new design and then ditching it for his old deck right before the tournament.

DUEL ONE:

Austin:  He couldn’t maintain field presence, but in the end he summoned Paladin and I lost.  Mmm… a pattern is beginning to develop… I wonder…  4-5

Steven:  Duel one dragged on and on because Austin killed just about everything I summoned. It wasn’t until I had about ten cards left that I realized he was trying to deck me out. In desperation I somehow got Austin down to zero shields but I had no way of pulling off the final blow. Then with three cards left I drew Crystal Paladin, but there were no liquid people to evolve from! The next turn I topdecked my last hulcus, evolved, and delivered the last shot to win. 8-2

DUEL TWO:

Austin:  I’m going to have nightmares for weeks about Crystal Paladin.  4-6

Steven:  Duel two wasn’t nearly as exciting and I don’t remember much. I’ll just say that I won.  9-2

Austin:  ONE CARD!!!  Mmmm… Something is unsettling.  My only losses were to blue/black decks that ran at least two Crystal Paladins… Hmmm….

Steven:  So after a brief scare having to play an additional round, it actually benefited me. The final standing were announced and I placed third, good enough for the semifinals. My opponent: none other than Lee Sandow.

Stephan VS Justin

Stephan:  Justin was pissed that there would be a round 5. He has always ran tournaments 4 rounds, 1 final round (Depending on points, 2 final rounds). But he knew he had me, considering how he had been kicking my butt lately.  Well, sorry Justin. Lol. He had a quick start, I got lucky and pulled a couple of good hands and some really good STs. It was the Spiral Gate/Ghost Touch combo that really killed him. YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU JUSTIN!! Lol, no matter what dude, it’s always a pleasure and always a thrill. Me and you by far have the closest, most tense matches. Again, the pleasure was all mine.  8-4

Justin:  In the first game, I got a band hand he had great shields.  The second game, I pulled a win out of my rear end.  Finally, he had great control in the third game.  8-6

Ramsey gets a bye!

Ramsey:  I sat around twiddling my thumbs.

SEMIFINALS:  15+

Of the team Galactic Quest players that were there that day, 4 of us made it to the semi final rounds.  Lee Sandow, Steven Cantrell, Stephan Slack, and James Roth (who goes to the Buford Store), all made it to the finals.  Great try to everyone who didn’t make it, and good luck to you four in the finals!

Lee Sandow VS Steven Cantrell

Top Four Semifinals: Vs Lee (Black/Blue

Lee:  Steven had beaten me in tournaments for the last two weeks in a row.  I was really hoping to beat him here, but I didn’t have high hopes.

Steven:  Lee and myself are about evenly matched cardwise and skillwise. We have had some close duels lately, so I was prepared for a fight…until I saw my opening hand.

DUEL ONE:

Lee:  It went back and fourth in the beginning.  Finally, a well timed Lost Soul stripped him of his hand, which allowed me to win.  10-4

Steven:  Either I shuffled my deck too well or not well enough, but I drew about the crappiest hands possible BOTH DUELS. The first duel wasn’t as bad, so I almost managed a comeback but Lee dueled well enough to not give me a realistic shot.  9-3

DUEL TWO:

Lee:  He drew an AWEFUL hand.  I got off to a good start, and his hand never really recovered.  Especially not after I lost souled him two separate times.  Still, it was that opening hand that did him in.  I felt bad for beating him, but hey, that’s life.  11-4

Steven:  Next round my hand consisted of NONE of my sixteen cards that cost three or less. Lee simply Stompatron’d me into the ground before I had a chance.  9-4

Stephan Slack VS James Roth

Stephan:  This kid plays at the Buford location. Surprisingly, he wooped butt and so did his friend. Turns out that playing the store owner, who is about as good as Lee, all the time pays off in the long run. He was the only undefeated kid their – until I came along. First match he owned and everyone was worried I wouldn’t get to the finals, revenging everyone’s defeat by the infamous LEE SANDOW. Next two matches flew by. Very close. James showed great sportsmanship and we had a great time none the less.  10-4

Stephan:  Welp, I guess since Lee beat Steven (Who defeated the undefeated Lee that past two weeks), it was just me and him. And as it turned out at the last Civ’s, everyone was in for a treat :).  Lee:  Sad but true…

FINALS:  15+

Lee Sandow VS Stephan Slack

Lee:  This takes me back to the old days when Slack and I played Pokemon.  We both usually ended up in the finals, and he constantly beat me with his Sneasel/King/Krow deck.  Good old days.  Well, he beat me in the first match, which took me by a bit of surprise, seeing as how I’d beaten him back in round one.  Well, it happens.  Next duel, he got me in a Corile lock which he kindly let me out of.  I ended up winning that one.  Finally, he pulled off a Merfolk in game three, and he had 5 cards in hand and six mana while I was topdecking with six mana.  I never got my hand back… and I lost. Second place again.

Stephan:  Lee was very stunned when I beat him first match. “Yes! I finally beat Lee! Finally! OMG!” were the words that I chanted, as Lee laughed and told me it wasn’t over yet. Of course, I was just thrilled to have beaten him. Second match was about even, with me making some incredibly stupid mistakes and Lee just flying through. Third match he had a great start, but like the first match, I did farely well.

 AFTERMATH

Stephan:  In the end, I had alot of fun. The year’s Civs was definitely better (Adrian Carter – running away won’t get you anywhere, son!). Team GQ got a couple of new arrivals and lots of them showed up (Taking most of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places). We all played some great games, and luck was on my side. Of course, now that lee has been beaten by the under dawg Slack, I am in for a beaten’ next week (Although I think the 5 packs that I gave him might have evened things out a bit. You know how I do).

Lee:  Second place again.  Well, I salute you Slack. Thank you for the cards, and I hope you enjoy your plaque, because I’ll be taking it next time!

Steven:  For a great day of dueling to come to an end like this was a bit of a shame, but there’s always next week. Lee is a very tough opponent but I expected better of myself. My prize for placing third was six survivor packs. All considered today turned out well.

Austin:  I guess it’s time to modify the Dark Incinerator.

Ramsey:  Nuthin to say.

Justin:  Join us at Galactic Quest in Lawrenceville.  www.galacticquest.com for more information!

Justin:  After Tyler surrendered, I was the champion! Hurray! I got the sexy plaque and my booster box! Hurray! I was the champ! (of my division of course) So, it ended up in the 15+ division with Lee being beaten by Slak (I know, I know. Lee beat Slak first match and lost to him in the finals… same thing that happened with him and Austin at the last 5 Civs… VERY ironic…) Congrats to you Slak.
