Reports
"Rising Suns" - by Rob "NBK"
Cummins - BishopGames, Coventry, UK
Deck Name: "Rising Suns" (Light/Water "T&K" Aggro Deck)
Name: Rob "NBK" Cummins
Location: BishopGames Card Shop, Coventry, UK
Date of Tournament: 21st January, 2006
Number of Duelists: 8
Heya all, NBK is back on the scene giving you all another
fresh look into the UK meta, particularly here in Coventry!
With this being the 1st Constructed tournament of the year,
this was a tournament that a lot of people wanted to win to
get a good start to the new season and with Set 9 "Fatal
Brood of Infinite Ruin" having just been released, I was
interested to see if anyone was gonna play any of the new
cards in their decks! Got up at 8am, quick shower, small
breakfast and out the door, catch the bus to Birmingham New
Street Station and catch the train to Coventry and walk the
10mins to the shop.
At first, I thought I was going to be the only one there but
soon enough people start to show and while it wasn't the
biggest turnout we have had, it was still enough to provide
us all with some good competition and a nice assortment of
decks! Our Tournament Organiser for the day, Zann, also
decided to join in on the fun so we can the full 8 duelists!
The deck I used for this tournament was only a deck that I
had decided to use a few days previous, with the idea coming
from Mr King off the main DuelMasters forums and JMatthew
highlighting the possible deck as being good. So i decided
to take the idea and make my own unique version and while
testing against control decks went 50/50 at times, I was
convinced it would do well enough at the tournament! And
besides, while I did have my super control deck with me that
would have done even better, control decks bore me too
easily so this was more of a challenge more than anything
else. So here is the deck....."Rising Suns"
"Rising Suns" Light/Water "T&K" Aggro Card Deck (45)
Light:
4 x Sarius, Vizier of Suppression
4 x Miele, Vizier of Lightning
4 x Kalute, Vizier of Eternity
4 x Magris, Vizier of Magnetism
4 x Jill Warka, Time Guardian
2 x Phal Eega, Dawn Guardian
2 x Petrova, Channeler of Suns
3 x Craze Valkryie, the Drastic
4 x Holy Awe
Water:
4 x Marinomancer
4 x Hydro Hurricane
4 x Eureka Charger
2 x Energy Stream
After getting registered and seated, the 1st round draws
were made and I happened to get the worst draw in my 1st
round......Adam Hawkesford!
Round 1 vs Adam Hawkesford (Darkness/Light/Nature Control
Deck)
This was the 1st time since the UK Nationals that Adam and I
have had the chance to meet up, let alone duel and
considering his strong performance at the Nationals (made
the Top 8 and only lost to the eventual Winner, Lamahl
Skeritt!), I was worried with how my deck would play against
his! 1st duel saw me try and figure out his deck and soon
into the duel, I was playing rather defensive. He managed to
Lost Soul my hand as soon as he hit 7 mana and from there on
he managed to control me and take me out using his weenies.
2nd duel was a very close call on both of us. We both kept
taking control of the field, but this time luck was on my
side as I was able to keep his side clear with tapping and
killing his creatures. Petrova played a big part in this win
as my powered up Initiates were a real pain for him to deal
with. While he did Nexus his shields a bit, he never had the
field to take advantage of them so I won it after that! 3rd
duel started off similar to the 1st but after getting Lost
Souled, I topdecked Marinomancer and got 3 Light cards and
was back into the swing of things and soon enough it came
down to the final shields of the game and suprisingly
enough, I managed to break the last shield and with Magris,
took the win! Shook hands with him afterwards and was well
happy with myself for the result! Soon after, the next round
was called, and my next opponent was someone I hadn't lost
to in Contructed yet, Owen Barry!
2-1
Round 2 vs Owen Barry (Rainbow Merfolk Control Deck)
Now, Owen attended the UK Nationals but got a very rude
awakening as he got thrashed in several of his first rounds
due to his deck just not meeting the standards that everyone
else was out, so after the Nationals, he started planning
his deck out for this day, and with Adam Skrendrovic, they
both built control decks for the tourney but Adam changed
his mind and went with his Beasty deck, but more on that
later! Owen has just won his last match 2-0 and while his
deck has all 5 civs in it, it was a typical Control deck so
it couldn't be underestimated. 1st duel so my deck do
something it wasn't exactly meant to do.....Rush. Kalute got
sent out on turn 2 and 3 and by the time he managed to get
some defence up, it was too late and it got tapped and
killed and took the 1st duel easy. The 2nd and 3rd duels
came down to him manipulating his shields with Mana Nexus
and some rather dodgy shield triggers (gave the impression
that his shields were fixed, especially as nearly everyone
of them was a ST!) so while both duels were close, his
shields saved him and he took the shock win 2-1. Of course,
he had mentioned that I wasn't my top deck so he took it as
a fluck.....how nice. People were suprised to see me lose
but with me playing such an unconventional deck, people
dismissed it as nothing. Had a break and played Adam
Skrendrovic against his tourney deck (Darkness/Nature
Beastfolk) and his control deck ( 4 Civ control) that Zann
was using for the tournament since he didn't have his own
deck. The practise against the control proved useful as my
next opponent in Round 3 just happened to be Zann, our TO!
3-3
Round 3 vs Zann (4 Civ Control)
Now this deck was originally based on Lamahl Skeritt's
winning UK Nationals deck, but Adam didn't like how it was
meant to be played so he added in his own touches here and
there and his deck was handed to Zann for this tournament
and so far Zann hadn't been doing too bad! However, both
duels proved to not be a problem for me as both duels both
of us stalled to bits, and then Petrova and Craze Valkryie
came out and with the super blockers in play and no Darkness
in his deck, his deck crumpled very quickly and he didn't
manage to attack a single shield of mine, so that proved
quite good! In the 2nd duel, it had to be said that he did
use a Natural Snare and Mana Nexus even though he had no
Nature Mana to use either card, but I let him off with it as
he was dead anywayz, so an easy 2-0 victory for me! Owen
went on to beat Alex Hawkesford, Adam's brother, and Adam
himself had just beaten Adam Skrendrovic! Next round, I was
expecting to play Alex and his Darkness/Water/Fire Merfolk
control, but I was in for a shock when I got paired with
Jack Flowers!!
5-3
Round 4 vs Jack Flowers (Fire/Darkness Rush)
Now, it must be mentioned that Jack, similar to Owen had not
beaten me in Constructed play before this tournament and I
was worried about his deck as Rush decks are always
considered dangerous, regardless of WHO plays them! But with
a history of losses to me, this played a big part in the
eventual outcome of the match. Jack wasn't confident going
into the 1st duel but he started off well knocked out 3 of
my shields, but he couldn't keep any field presence against
me and slowly but surely, my blockers and Petrova went up,
Hydro Hurricane got used on him and his confidence went down
the drain! Soon after I slowly took out his shields so as
not to give him took much of an advantage and it paided off
with a win! The 2nd duel was identical to the 1st but Craze
Valkryie played a bigger role this time around as he kept
having his creatures tapped and killed and eventually
conceded the game to me. Another 2-0 win! In the main match
being Owen and Adam H., Adam managed to gain his rep back by
beating Owen 2-1 so myself, Owen, Adam and Alex were all
tied on 9pts each going into the final round. Again, I
thought I was going to face Alex, but amazingly enough, I
got drawn against Aaron Insley, the lowest ranked duelist in
the room!
7-3
Round 5 vs Aaron Insley (Mono Light Deck)
This match has "Irony" written all over it as prior to the
tournament beginning, myself and Aaron were practising
against each other and so we knew each other's decks easy,
but in all our practise games, I won them but he started
breaking more and more of my shields in each duel so I
couldn't relax with this being an important duel! Both duels
saw Petrova out on the field, but with his deck being based
on Light, he just happened to have a fair few Initiates on
the field as well so it proved to be a more strategic game
than in any of my other duels. Craze Valkryie in a lot of
the time was the main difference between us and slowly but
surely his field was levelled. In the 2nd duel, it got so
bad that I had all 3 of my Craze Valkryie's on the field and
with that much heavy tappage and kill, his deck couldn't
stand up to it and again, it lead to a well-earned 2-0 win!!
Final Score: 9-3 (4 out 5 rounds won!)
With the results all entered, and due to other small things,
Owen Barry, myself and Alex tied for 1st but Owen took 1st
place with Alex in 2nd after beating his brother, 2-0 in the
final round, and myself placing ina respectable 3rd place.
Adam H finished 4th, Jack finished 5th, Zann 6th, Adam S 7th
and little Aaron in 8th place. Congrats to Owen Barry for
winning but in a way, im glad i didn't finish 1st as his
boosters had no good cards at all and Alex pulled a Petrova
while I got myself a nice Stratosphere Giant so I was happy
with the results.
Overall, I was over the moon with how the deck ran and with
a few minor changes, Im sure this deck can play along with
the top tier decks and win on a regular basis! Thxs to Zann
for running the tournament and for BishopGames for holding
it. Next tournament won't be for a while so I'll see you's
then!!
