Old School Worm Deck
Fix Up - 2.17.05
Today I'm going to help with an oldschool
Worm deck. Remember back when Worms were all the rage during evo
crushinators? Well it appears Darin is attempting to bring that kind of deck
back into style. Here's what Darin had to say about his deck...
I am trying to make a good mono-dark deck that uses ultracide and chaos
worms. I don't care about the rarity of the cards or anything. I am hoping
to have a good worm deck.
Spells:
4x Terror Pit
4x Critical Blade
4x Death Smoke
Creatures:
4x Horrid Worm
4x Gregorian Worm
2x Poison Worm
2x Swamp Worm
4x Bloody Squito
4x Wailing Shadow Belbetphlo
4x Ultracide Worm
4x Chaos Worm
Thanks
Darin
Wow. This is the challenge of the century. Trying to make a good deck with
both Ultracide AND Chaos Worm is really hard to do. But I'll try. I'm going
to have to go the completly unconventional route with this one. This means
I'll be dropping staples out of the deck to make room for different cards.
Don't worry though. Hopefully I'll be able to keep the deck effective. I
think having an evo ratio of 4:8 is good to do. So we need eight worms for
Ultracide, and eight Worms for Chaos Worm. Now I know that a lot of the
worms are really bad to use. Fortunatly in a deck like this Dark Reversal
can easily act as an extra worm. People will be glad to kill off Horrid
Worm, so you should almost always have a worm in the grave to fetch via Dark
Reversal. Horrid and Gregorian Worm are both very good to use. Dark Reversal
can be used to fetch needed cards like Horrid Worm, Bloody Squito, Chaos
Worm, or Slayers. The next decent worm IMO is Stinger Worm (You'll see why I
chose him over Poison Worm in a bit). So your worm base setup will look like
this... x4 Horrid Worm, x4 Stinger Worm, x4 Gregorian Worm, x4 Dark
Reversal. To make room for the changes I'll drop Critical Blade (I've got a
better way for you to kill blockers, so just wait and see), Swamp Worm, and
Poison Worm. So now the deck looks like this...
Spells:
4x Terror Pit
4x Dark Reversal
4x Death Smoke
Creatures:
4x Horrid Worm
4x Gregorian Worm
4x Stinger Worm
4x Bloody Squito
4x Wailing Shadow Belbetphlo
4x Ultracide Worm
4x Chaos Worm
Stinger Worm seems like a bad choice for the deck. But to fix that I'm going
to do the unthinkable. I'm going to take Terror Pit out of the deck. And
replace it with Sinister General Damudo (told ya I was going to go the
unconventional route.) Without a Sheild Trigger Terror Pit you're going to
lose a lot of tempo. But hopefully Damudo will speed things up for you.
Killing all of your opponent's 3000 or less powered creatures should be
annoying to say the least. Your own creatures shouldn't die because most of
them should become either Chaos Worm, or Ultracide by the time you need to
use Damudo. Wailing Shadow gets killed by Damudo which isn't a good thing.
Perhaps there's a way to fix that. I'm assuming that Wailing Shadow is meant
to deal with Barkwhip, and all the other creatures in the 5000 power range.
So I'm going to take out Wailing Shadow to put in Bone Spider. So here's
what the deck looks like now...
Spells:
4x Dark Reversal
4x Death Smoke
Creatures:
4x Sinister General Damudo
4x Horrid Worm
4x Gregorian Worm
4x Stinger Worm
4x Bloody Squito
4x Bone Spider
4x Ultracide Worm
4x Chaos Worm
This is the finished version of the deck. The mana curve is a bit steep, and
the deck may act slow. In the right meta this deck can easily shine though.
In order for this deck to really work well I'd suggest dropping Ultracide
for Terror Pit, and a few other changes. But you wanted to run Ultracide,
and it's my job to help you with a pure worm deck. For the early game you
will want to focus on defending as much as possible. Try to put Bloody
Squito into play, and then follow it up with Horrid Worm, or Bone Spider
depending on what cards you expect your opponent to use. If you manage to
get Horrid Worm into play then try to keep it into play until turn five pops
up. By that time you'll want to evolve it into Chaos Worm, kill a creature
with Chaos Worm's effect, and then attack another creature with Chaos Worm.
On turn four you should try to cast Death Smoke, or put a dead Squito back
into play via Dark Reversal. Try to take the first few sheilds out
exclusivly with Horrid Worm. This way your opponent doesn't get a bigger
hand from his shields. After that try to take the last few sheilds (and your
opponent) out in one fell swoop via Ultracide and other creatures. If you
know that your opponent has a lot of little creatures then put Damudo into
play, and kill it with Stinger Worm. Stinger Worm should never be used
unless you have Damudo in play. Damudo is a nice way to take out multiple
blockers, so try to save him for when your opponent has three or more
killable creatures. Well that's it for this week. Someone try this deck out
and tell me how it works. Perhaps it's better than I think it is. ;) I'll
try to get another deck garage in over the weekend. Anyway until next time
keep sending submissions.
