“There is no book or teacher to give you the answers, to show you the path. Choose your own way! Do not follow me, or anyone else.”
— Ezio Auditore
Ezio is probably still the most popular Assassin’s Creed character, and it’s fitting that he made our top ten list this year. Since everyone’s favorite assassin became everyone’s favorite assassin’s guild master, it’s equally fitting that he threatens to overwhelm opponents with a swarm of efficient, specialized killers. There are 133 physically-printed creatures eligible for his freerunning bonus, plus changelings; since they’re all eligible to be in his deck in Commander, your opponent will never know what to expect. It might even be Thraximundar.
His instant-win ability is a little further away from the start of a Commander game compared to 1v1, but the number of support spells and tricks that are available because of his five-color identity means it’s far from out of the question. From a design perspective, that impresses me too: they managed to fit his leadership qualities, his immaculate Eagle Strike, and his ability to carve through crowds of guards in the Batman: Arkham Asylum style into a single text box and statline. It shows just how clever they can be when they choose to!

This card was #6 on my Top 10 list.
Any time you get a card strong enough to make an underrepresented tribe viable, that’s worth a nod. While the Universes Beyond products of 2024 didn’t play demolition derby with the metagames as a set from last year did, Assassin’s Creed gave the Assassin tribe a pretty potent enabler, both for his triggered ability and his ability to cheat on their costs…and cheat reliably at that, because Ezio Auditore da Frienze just so happens to pack menace and a menacing statline.
I will say that Ezio Auditore da Firenze has not taken off outside of Commander; he’s not inherently awful, but he’s more likely just an enabler for a fairly underwhelming tribe without a lot going on besides. Still, he’s earned his stripes in EDH (especially Duel Commander), and he can definitely leverage a little bit of space and blow a game open in a trice.
