When we first reviewed Fabled Passage, I made a comment about the Redwall novels, and the potential for a future Magic set inspired by them and how the card would fit in such a setting. I didn’t quite think we’d be seeing it comparatively soon after that article. But apparently somebody else was thinking the same thing! And it’s still a good card in any format, although its limitations will stand out more in some than others. Fetchlands don’t need to be able to get nonbasic lands to be good: we’ve seen that in some recent formats, not least when Fabled Passage was first released, and that’s been true as far back as people playing the Onslaught fetchlands in Standard as their deck’s only set of pseudo-dual lands. But faster decks will probably not want to run the risk of having tapped lands early, and the same is true for decks of any speed that have very specific multicolored costs early in their mana curve. Even so, this card’s benefits will often outweigh its drawback, and with the right kind of ramp strategy, you might not even need to wait until your fifth turn to start getting untapped lands.

A bit of a lateral take on a lot of fetchlands. Fabled Passage has an interesting condition to be an improvement over the likes of Evolving Wilds and the Onslaught-era fetchlands; it can only grab basic lands, but it fetches them in untapped if the game is late enough to have enough lands. On turn 4 or later, it’s a flat upgrade over common fetches, and it doesn’t cost life (which can matter in long games as life totals drop), though it can only find basic lands. This was particularly useful in Throne of Eldraine, a set with a slight monocolor theme, though it’s maybe less useful in the multicolor-focused Bloomburrow.

That said, Fabled Passage is still a good card for monocolor decks or decks that can benefit from basic lands being dug out in particular. It’s a pretty simple card with a lot of efficacy baked into it, but it does its job extremely well. It won’t find a home for every deck, but there are lots of decks this can spice up all the same.
