Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay
– #SAST-EN020

If your opponent Special Summons a Link Monster(s) (except during the Damage Step): You can Special Summon this card from your hand, draw cards equal to the number of Link Monsters your opponent controls +1, then shuffle cards from your hand into the Deck equal to the number of Link Monsters they control. When your opponent activates a card or effect that targets a monster(s) you control (Quick Effect): You can discard 1 card; negate the activation, and if you do, destroy it. You can only use each effect of “Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay” once per turn.

Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay or “Thanos Dragon” as it has come to be known, has become one of the most sought after cards in the game. Garnering at least $75 for one, this card can set the tone for a duel to go in your favor.

A hand trap of sorts, Level 7 Dragon and DARK, you can drop this titan off a Link Summon of your opponents and benefit from a Skull Dread-like effect depending on the number of link monsters your opponent has. Three link monsters? Draw four, cycle back three. Getting to fix your hand before you even have a turn and off of your opponents plays, that puts you ahead without having to use your resources. If that wasn’t enough, “Thanos Dragon” has a 1-for-1 quick effect to negate and destroy a card/effect that targets a monster(s) on the field. You can force out an effect from your opponent and negate it, making them spend resources on their turn before you even draw. The way players tend to like to make big boards turn one can be punished by this card. It doesn’t have the strongest defense, and reminds me of Dragon Ice, but much better.

If you can get one, play it. If you can get 3, play them.

Happy Fantastical Friday! Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay is a Level 7 Dark Dragon-type monster with 2400 Atk and 1800 Def. I must say, I love everything about this card except the Atk should have been 100 points higher. All the stats really work for it. I particularly like Level 7 because then a Level 1 Tuner could make Borreload Savage Dragon. (or many Level 8 Synchros) There are 2 great effects on Phantazmay that are a hard once per turn. From the hand, in response to a Special Summon of a Link Monster being performed by your opponent, Phantazmay will Special Summon itself. Then you have to draw cards equal to the number of Link Monsters they control plus 1. Then you have to shuffle cards from your hand back into the deck equal to the number of Link Monsters they control. In essence, you get a monster on the field during either player’s turn and draw a card while shuffling something else back. Similar to Saryuja, being able to fix your hand is what brings Phantazmay up in price. Especially when the conditions are so predominant in the meta right now. Now the second effect is a lot of icing on a great cake. While on the field, you can discard a card to negate and destroy a card or effect that targets a monster you control. Sure it’s once per turn, but it’s a QuickEffect so if you have the resources use this to deal with targeting problems. I’m just really glad you can revive this and use the second effect regardless of its original summon. Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay is absolutely worth the price right now for its rarity and utility.

Score: 4.5/5     Art: 5/5 Even if it didn’t look like Thanos, it would still look very cool.

We end this week off with the most expensive card in Savage Strike, and arguably the best considering it has that price tag, Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay.

Phantazmay is a Level 7 DARK Dragon with 2400 ATK and 1800 DEF. I’ve seen far worse stats on Level 7s in my life, DARK and Dragon make for a good combination once again, especially in the Main Deck this time. If your opponent Special Summons a Link Monster, you can Special Summon this card from the hand and then draw cards equal to the number of Link Monsters on the field +1 and then put back cards from your hand into the deck equal to the number of Link Monsters on the field. Perfect for shuffling through your deck to craft your perfect hand, it’s better when there are multiple Links on the field, but it’s hard to call when your opponent may be done Link Summoning. I’d say always use this after your opponent’s first Link Summon since no matter what you are always guaranteed a +1 and nothing more or less, but you could wait till they put a second Link on the field but only if you are 100% certain they’ll make a second Link Play. Don’t wait too late, because once again you never know when your opponent will stop. I should mention I know this card says you can’t activate this effect during the Damage Step, but I don’t know many cards that summon Link Monsters during that step anyways, so it shouldn’t be important, lol. This card also has protection as if your opponent targets a monster(s) you control, doesn’t have to be this, you can discard a card to negate the activation and destroy that card. Both effects are Quick Effects as well as I should mention, even though I know the first effect doesn’t mention it, but that’s likely because it activates in the hand and those effects are typically during any time. Having protection from targeting for all your monsters is great to have, even though targeting is falling out of favor expect on cards that would be broken if they didn’t target, having the protection from it is still great to have, especially since every card doesn’t have targeting protection. Both effects are hard once per turns cause that first effect especially needs it, and it’s probably too good to negate every targeting effect considering how easy it is to get out. This card is a great hand trap in the format, especially with Link Summoning being the Extra Deck method of choice right now and probably will be for a while, just make sure to use it early in your opponent’s Link Combos because you never know when they will stop. This card makes for a great Maxx “C” replacement since the TCG has it banned and would still be a good card if Maxx “C” was legal over here.

Advanced Rating: 4.5/5

Art: 4.5/5 I’ve heard of Thanos comparisons and I can see it, him being a Secret Rare does his art justice I feel, though it does suck for his price.

We have another behemoth of a name for a Monster to close the week.  Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay, is a Level 7, Dark, Dragon Monster, with 2400 attack and 1800 defense.  At a glance, we aren’t impressed with either of those numbers, even on a Level 7.  Even Dark Magician is better than that, so I’m not being overly harsh on this card.

Of course, little of that matters.  A Link Summon (save in the Damage Step) by your opponent grants you a Special Summon of this card from your Hand.  You then get to Draw cards equal to the number of Link Monsters currently controlled by your opponent at the time +1.  Phenomenal effect here (fantastical, I might say) that’s AT LEAST 2 cards to your Hand.

Which is, mind you, only a +1 (you got a Monster on the Field, lost a card from you Hand, and Draw 2) but it COULD be more than a +1, and in terms of Field presence, at least in that moment, you’re breaking even.  Each side got a Monster, although your opponent is losing Field presence in bringing out a Link Monster, so this all (essentially) should swing in your favor.

Oh, but wait, there’s a downside to this too, it’s essentially a Magical Mallet, because after this, you shuffle a number of cards you Drew via this effect back into your Deck.  (Save for the +1) so you should, still come out of this +1.  And that’s fair, an effect that can strengthen your Hand without giving you TOO much advantage, since you get a 2400 attacker on the Field too.

Lastly, as a Quick effect, as we saw and you should be familiar with from earlier in the week, when your opponent activates a card OR effect that Targets (blasted Target specification) a Monster of yours, you can negate (and destroy if successful) said card.  The Target part is kind of a downer, and the Monster only part is too, but it’s still protection, and you use it WHEN YOU WANT, which is nice.

It’s different than earlier this week, but protection, even specific protection, that you can use at your discretion is good.  The body here isn’t as strong (remember 2400 attack) but it’s easier to bring out, and the Draw mechanic is nice, even if it cycles the Deck instead.  It’s more or less on par with Borreload Savage Dragon.  They would work well together!

Art:  5/5  Quite fantastical indeed.  (Did anyone else not know ‘fantastical’ is a word?)  These colors are dazzling, the bright white blue, contrasting the dark purple armor, as well as the pink/purple in the sky, and the white/gold in the bottom section.  So beautiful.
