Hello Pojo Fans,
It’s time for GB to get a REAL Field Spell, and that is Flavian – Colosseum of the Gladiator Beasts.
Flavian may not trigger on activation, but it allows you to do a once per turn 1-for-1 to search a GB from the Deck. Any card discarded for any GB is an even better Gladiator Proving Ground despite it costing you a discard, but that discard can be mitigated by something like setting up a Special Summon using Darius or the Graveyard GB being fodder for the new Fusion GB we review on Friday. Honestly, the Field Spell could’ve ended here and it would be better than Colosseum.
If you Special Summoned a GB from the Deck, Flavian will set a GB Trap from the Deck at the End Phase. War Chariot is always appreciated, and now you’ve got Gladiator Beast Charge to set with this. Had it been able to set Spells too it would have been incredible, but this does help save Gistel for Spell searching. Getting to your monster negation in War Chariot only benefits the new negation you have in the archetype and while it is a bit out-dated, looping Equeste and War Chariot is still a thing.
It wasn’t going to take much for Flavian to top the previous Gladiator Beast Field Spell, but it sure did. A viable search option for GB monsters each turn, potential setup in the grave with the right cards, and it can set a GB Trap each turn when you’ve Special Summoned from the Deck a Gladiator Beast, and you are always going to be doing that. Great support addition that was sorely needed.

The old Field Spell for Gladiator Beasts was basically out of date on release, so it’s nice after all these years that we have a new one in the form of Flavian – Colossem of the Gladiator Beasts.
Flavian is a Field Spell where all the effects are each a HOPT, with the first letting you discard a card to search for any Gladiator Beast monster. More searching is useful for a Deck that needs specific monsters in hand to start their combos considering most of the old Gladiator Beasts you’d be playing don’t start any combos on their own. The discard does suck, but you can at least do it every turn and not just on activation. When your opponent declares an attack, you can summon any Gladiator Beast from your Deck that cannot be destroyed in battle. It’d be great if it was treated as being summoned via the effect of a Gladiator Beast monster, especially since the opponent isn’t attacking a monster that cannot be destroyed in battle (especially a Gladiator Beast) unless they can deal the damage that’ll win them the game. Finally, during the End Phase of a turn a Gladiator Beast was summoned from the Deck, you can set a Gladiator Trap from your Deck, so access to War Chariot and Charge for the opponent’s turn after you combo. It’s a nice updated Field Spell for a Deck that didn’t have a playable Field Spell to begin with. This and Proving Ground gives you six searchers for the Deck, so you should have an easy time getting the pieces needed to combo. A solid 3-of for the Deck.

It looks like the Gladiator Beasts finally decided to give their colosseum some TLC, resulting in today’s card, Flavian – Colosseum of the Gladiator Beasts. One again a Field Spell, you’ll mainly search Flavian with Gladiator Beast Gistel or Test Panther. Flavian comes with 3 hard once per turn effects; the first lets you discard a card and search any Gladiator Beast monster. Gladiator Beast is unfortunately scant when it comes to 1 card combos, so if you’re using Flavian as a starter, you’ll probably be grabbing Gladiator Beast Gistel or whichever name best suits your combo route alongside Gistel. The second effect can be triggered whenever your opponent declares an attack, letting you Special Summon a Gladiator Beast from your deck and make it indestructible by battle. It’s a cute effect that helps set up follow-up– Gistel and Gladiator Beast Darius are great choices here– but it’s not too reliable for triggering battle-reliant effects because your opponent can simply choose not to attack again after a replay. Flavian’s third and final effect makes all the difference; it triggers during the End Phase if you Special Summoned any Gladiator Beast from your deck that turn, letting you set a Gladiator Trap directly from your deck. The most popular choices are Gladiator Beast Charge for a potential multi-pop and Gladiator Beast War Chariot for a simple but strong monster effect negation and destruction. Charge is probably a bit better in general, though against decks with heavy Graveyard extension ability like Maliss, you’re probably better off with War Chariot. Heck, Gladiator Beast has such amazing search power that you might even be able to use both, searching one or the other with Gistel or Test Panther. Overall, a gold standard Field Spell; it can access your key combo pieces and saves a search for your Gladiator Beast Traps, as if you didn’t have enough disruption. It’d be even better if Gladiator Beast had robust 1-card combos or if you could search the Test monsters, but I suppose it balances out the deck’s already monstrous search power. Naturally, play 3 of these things, and maybe even Terraforming to taste.
+Helps access key combo pieces like Gladiator Beast Gistel and Noxious
+Saves a search for the Gladiator Beast Traps
-Battle Phase summon is too predictable to pull off significant plays
-Still can’t search Test monsters
