Episode 5: The Man With the Mechanical Arm
Written by Buster Blader 126

As the episode begins, we find the Elric brothers at a train station. As Al buys some bread, Ed makes a phone call to Lieutenant Colonel Roy Mustang. Ed tells him that he & his brother will depart for Central City at the 9:20 train, but Roy asks him whether or not there was another train before that. Ed answers with a "yes," but told him that the train was actually about to leave. Roy tells him to take that train instead. Ed starts to ask why, but Roy interrupts, telling him to just get on, and hangs up. Ed & Al quickly get on the moving train in the nick of time. Back at Central City, Roy simply says that he wants to test Ed's luck. A young woman standing beside him simply stares at him.

In the train, Ed wonders what kind of person Roy is. At that moment, a little girl pops up from the seat behind Ed. Al waves. The little girl ducked her head just as Ed turned around. Al sighs, and asks Ed if he's scary, since he thought that he scared her. As Ed starts to reply, the little girl (who is called Marin) can be heard, telling her mom that there's was a strange person nearby. Her mother tells her to be quiet, but Marin kept on talking. Feeling a bit peeved, Ed stands up and looks around the train. As Ed sits down, a couple of men wearing shades stare from the other side of the train. Marin pops up again and waves to Al. Ed reassures Al that she likes him, and Marin confirms this with a nod. She then notices Ed's automail arm, which he proudly shows. The mother then pops up, telling her to not give them any trouble. Everybody smiles.

In the front car, a General called Hakuro and his family are in a room with another man from the military. As the two men casually talk about the General's vacation, Warrant Officer Farman & another man talk about the higher-ups & the location of Major Maes Hughes. In another room, that very same man was on the phone, talking to Roy about his pregnant wife. Roy eventually hangs up out of irritation. Maes simply thinks that the line is unstable, and calls again. Farman tries to get Maes' attention, but fails, and leaves to go on patrol. Maes once again talks to Roy about his personal matters, but Roy interrupts him, saying that he's already heard the same story 50 times. Roy tells him to simply call his wife instead, but Maes already did. Pissed off, Roy tells him to stop asking him if he's already done so. The young woman from earlier (Riza Hawkeye) interrupts them, and angrily tells Maes that a baby doesn't come out in 5 months. Maes couldn't hear though, due to the train roaring through a tunnel.

After going through the tunnel, Farman spots Al during partol, and is suspicious. Meanwhile, Roy & Maes' conversation turns serious, as they were apparantly testing to see if anybody was tapping on the line. The men talk about the amount of people on the train being higher than usual. Another phone rings, which Maes picks up. It is Farman, who talks about a man in armour (Al). Listening from the other phone, Roy laughs, reassuring them that he's fine if there's a short person (Ed) with him. Farman runs to check, and exclaims that there is a short person. Ed, who was asleep, suddenly awakens, overreacting as usual. Farman tries to calm him down, but the 2 men in shades from earlier pull out their guns on him. Farman gets knocked out shortly after, and the passengers put their hands up in fear. Hakuro, his family, and the military man also get attacked, by a man with an eyepatch & his cronies.

Maes, sensing trouble, quickly hangs up & escapes. At that moment, more thugs enter the radio room. At Central City, Roy gets a phone call from Hakuro, who is being held captive. The man with the eyepatch snatches the phone. He reveals himself as Bard of the Blue Brigade, and demanded them to release their captured leader at Central Station, in exchange for the train’s passengers. Roy agrees, if Bard doesn't kill anybody. He is then abruptly hanged up on. When Riza shows some concern, Roy tells her not to worry, saying that he's already taken the necessary steps.

Meanwhile, the two thugs with shades approach Ed & Al with guns. Ed easily distracts them, and knocks one of them out. Al knocks the other guy out by conking him on the head. As the passengers question Ed & Al's actions, one of the thugs wakes up, & points his gun at Marin. As he shoots, Al quickly steps on him. Ed confirms Marin's safety, and reassures her that they'll be fine. As they start to head out, Farman wakes up, and tells them about their situation. Ed then decides to go the front from above and Al & Farman through the bottom.

On another part of the train, 2 thugs get confirmation that something happened on the rear of the train. One of them heads out, finding Al at the door. Disregarding Al's warning, the thug shoots. However, the bullets ricochet off of him & back to the thug. The other thug comes, and also shoots, disregarding Al's warning. At the front, Bard learns that the rear cars were retaken. Hakuro tries to disuade him, but Bard somehow shoots his ear, silencing him. Afterwards, he tells his thugs to search the train.

At the top, Ed almost falls off from trying to duck under a tree branch, but is saved by Maes. After the man introduces himself, they continue their assault. In the locomotive, the engineers are being held hostage. At the window, Ed gets their attention by sticking their tongue at them. Looking at the window, Maes infiltrates through the other window, & pierces one of the thug's hands with a hidden knife. Ed kicks the other thug onto the ground. The engineers follow suit by knocking them out. Ed climbs back up to the top afterwards. Another thug up top finds him, & shoots. Ed dodges, and draws a transmutation circle on the side of a car. He transmutes it into a cannon, and knocks the thug out with a cannonball. While Maes compliments him, an engineer tells him to watch out for the train's tender. With that, Ed thinks of an idea.

Bard is notified about the happenings going on. Then, a transmutated megaphone appears on the door. It turns out to be Ed, who demands the release of Hakuro & his family. When Bard refuses, a water pipe appears, and washes out the thugs outside with a stream of water. As Al proceeds to beat them up, Maes attacks Bard with his knife. However, he easily deflects it with his arm, and shoots at Maes using his other arm, hitting his shoulder. As Bard goes in for the kill, Ed appears, and they go into a deadlock. Ed then realizes that Bard also has an automail arm! Bard explains, telling Ed his story about how the military discharged him when he repaired his arm. After being thrown with questions, Ed gets angry, and breaks Bard's metal arm! Al then proceeds to knock him out.

At the station, the thugs are seen being tied up. Roy arrives, and approaches Bard. Seeing an opportunity to strike, Bard cuts his ropes using a knife hidden in the remains of his metal arm, and lunges! Roy proceeds to stop him, using his fire, created through alchemy. Roy then told the charred Bard with his other name, the Flame Alchemist. Ed then approaches Roy & asks him about him setting them up. Roy gives him an indirect answer, and then proceeds to tell Ed that he & his brother were given special permission to take the National Alchemist Test. This means that Roy tricked them into coming here otherwise. As Roy leaves, he tells Ed that he isn't being forced to take it. Ed shouts to him, saying that he'll take it. Suddenly, the brothers hear Marin's voice from afar, and find her with her mom. She waves at them, thanking them in the process. The brothers happily waved back.
