Pojo's FMA Card of the Day
Darktaro |
Today we're
looking at Frozen, an advantage that once again
depending on your meta can disrupt your
opponent's whole strategy. The idea behind
Frozen is main phase hate. For each player their
first main event or ability is free but after
that they must discard a card every time they
wish to play one. Frozen is great anti-Homonculus
as much of their strength lies in the main
phase. Imagine a level 3 Envy, Father Cornello,
Lust Torturer, Mugear, Land Baron, and Father
Cornello, Lust's Ringbearer. Now imagining have
to ditch 3 cards every turn if your opponent
wanted to use those effects.
The weaknesses of the card is it forces you to
play little main phase events and abilities
yourself. Also when facing a deck that also uses
minimal main phase events and abilities,
Frozen's effect may not be so potent. Another
weakness is your opponent can take the first
free main action to use Betrayal and kill off
Frozen before it has a chance to do any damage.
All in all though, a very solid advantage that
has the power to fully disrupt your opponent's
tempo.
Constructed: 55-Homonculus has another new
challenge to face, just make sure to watch out
for those Betrayals and Bull-Eyes. |

Wednesday:
Frozen 2 Cost Advantage
As an additional cost to play a main event or
ability, a palyer must discard one card. This
does not apply to the first event or ability
played by a player during a turn.
This card, again follows the lets have a Search
phase game. Its quite potent. A general rule of
thumb is "The more cards you have the more
options you have," This card lets you start out
with options and dwindle from there. On average
I'd say 5-6 cards in your hand, you play one for
free dwindling down to lets say 4, you now want
to use your Change in Plans, you now have 2
cards, your opponent Clues it back to something
of their choosing. In retaliation you Change one
last time dwindling your hand to 0 leaving you
vulnerable for the rest of the turn.
So yeah, now that you're scared to use the card
for scare of hurting yourself, lets see where we
work. My answer Rebels. The few rebel decks I
had relied seldom on Main events, besides Lizard
Man, all I really did was attachments. Against
say Homoncs, who base around abilities keep you
from going in or Catching the Train, they'll
burn their hand down. When you go in you have
your hand and your battle changers to fight
with.
This is a bit shorter then I normally review,
but I really don't know what to think of this
card, without any first hand knowledge.
Ratings:
Constructed: 2/5 I can't say this card is
worthless, but I believe it can shut down quite
a few decks, this rating is a bit biased as I
like my main phase actions.
Sealed: 1/5 It seems like a filler card for me.
Though being able to shut down main phase items
I'm not to sure how much I'd like my mains shut
down again. |

Wednesday -
Frozen
Hello again. Retched here with today's card of
the day. In continuing the theme of advantages
from the new set Sacrifice, here's 'Frozen'.
Advantage: Cost 2
As an additional cost to play a main event or
ability, a player must discard 1 card. This
ability does not apply to the first main event
or ability played by a player during a turn.
Ok... This is one of those double edged swords
that a player might have to come across every
now and again. Do you want to chuck a card to
play your second or third main ability... or do
you like your cards used for something else? Are
you running Reflection? Do you have more than
one copy in this deck? ... Is your hand worth
sacrificing?
Then again... Do you like the fact that your
opponent may have more cards in his/her hand
than you do?
If you're more of a beat 'em up/attachment type
deck, discarding cards might not be such a
problem since you're likely not playing many
main abilities either... But if you're running
character setting/penalty inducing abilities
heavily during the main, like say a
Claire/Homunculi deck... maybe you should pass
on this card... Or if you're playing against the
Homunculi deck, this advantage is their worst
nightmare and you're opponent should be looking
for the card or ability that will let them
destroy that advantage. Let's go to stats.
Constructed: 3/5. Too conditional for my tastes.
If you're running attachments only during your
main or at most one main ability activation,
it's in your deck. If you're playing Homunculi,
PASS or be prepared to discard your hand.
Limited: 2/5. This card doesn't get too much
better in sealed/booster drafts. Sideboard for
something else. (And yes I said sideboard... as
in it doesn't belong in the main deck... It
belongs in the pile of cards you're going to
take home with you and use in that Constructed
tournament later in the week.) |
The “Steel
Talon Alchemist” |
Sacrifice
Advantage #2 this week is Frozen:
Just when you
thought Homunculus hand control was killed off
by Bluebird a Duo of nasty cards arise. First
off you have Gluttony Pure Hunger to contend
with since it can simply take the bird out of
the game. But more importantly for today you
have the advantage Frozen.
Now in this
one card you have some wonderful combo
abilities. If you play Sloth Miss Guidance then
your opponents will have to discard 2 cards to
play their draw cards. Those two cards alone
will make an Elric deck scream and if you add in
Gluttony Pure Hunger then you’ll be able to play
some of those wonderful discard events to
completely drain your opponent’s resources.
So you say
you don’t want to use the staple discard events
since it would make you drop an extra card in
the process. Simply pull out your play-set of
Goodbye for a killer deck control spin on
things.
In
constructed this card has so many possibilities
for hand control it’s almost funny, so long as
you aren’t the opposing player who likes main
events that is.
In Limited
there are 12 main events and a handful of reacts
that could effect the main phase out of 34
events. There’s a good chance with that many
main events available that your opponents will
use them. And that’s not even counting
characters with main abilities.
There is
nothing better than to force your opponent to
deplete their resources in order to play events.
Having this in play may make an opponent rethink
whether to play an event now or wait until he
has a card he can safely sack. An extra turn is
sometimes all you need to turn around a match or
to simply decimate your opponent.
Final Score
Constructed:
4.5/5
If you play
Homunculus then use this card. If you don’t use
main events or abilities much then use this
card. If you like the main phase and all its
many wonders, you better get some Bulls-eyes.
Limited: 3/5
It’s a great
card yes. But with 30-40 card decks it can
backfire depending on your drafts and pulls. If
you can draft around this card then you’ve got
an evil plan and a wonderful deck not to mention
a little luck and I applaud you for all three.
But for most average drafters I might suggest
other routes and use this card more to delay
your opponent until you can get your deck
moving.
The “Steel
Talon” Alchemist |
State
Alchemist
Evan |
Frozen:
"Hey there my name is Evan, State Alchemist from
Tennessee and currently going to school at
Oberlin College.
Naturally this card will not work in a deck that
has more than a few
events/characters/advantages/attachments that
utilize the main phase. If you are going to use
frozen, you need to PLAN AROUND IT. As long as
your main events and abilities are nothing more
than one or two characters, a few draw cards,
and maybe a couple cards for location control,
you should be fine. To sum it up, if you are a
deck that is focused on battling, or perhaps
search phase control, then this is the deck for
you. I see Frozen being most useful in Rebel,
Military (reinforcements may be a problem
though), and Elric beatdown decks. I may not be
down on the current trends on the Homunculus
side of things, but I am guessing that most will
want to steer clear. I am definitely considering
replacing the mob mentalities of my Scar deck
with this bad boy.
Well, assuming you've built a proper deck that
avoids main whenever possible, you are free to
make main phase control decks cry. BTOOTF,
Torturer, Ringbearer, Shou's New Chimera,
Nightmares, the list of cards that will now cost
your opponent a pretty penny goes on and on. The
amount of self-hand destruction that certain
types will need to do in order to fulfill their
function may be enough to give you the win. Plan
around keeping "Frozen" safe, however, because
you can bet that Betrayal, Bullseye, and Lyra
NWGT are going to be chomping at the bit to get
rid of this thing. Keep a couple of pressures
and cages around just in case. Also, if you're
fighting another beatdown deck, frozen will
essentially be a waste of two recruitment
points, so keep that in mind.
Constructed 4/5: Not for everyone and not useful
against everyone, but in the right situation it
can be a game-breaker.
Sealed 2.5/5: Way less useful in sealed as you
may end up with a lot of "main cards" at the
least, you can use it for EE"
Thanks,
Evan |
