There’s a curious tension in Forsworn Paladin’s design: a one-mana 1/1 with menace is pretty efficient, but it almost seems more valuable to hold it back and use its activated abilities. Of course, this makes it valuable in the late game, where that little extra mana will sometimes make all the difference – not to mention how good that second ability is at breaking stalemates. And there’s little not to like about black having another way to interact with the treasure themes that are becoming popular in casual decks.

Part of the “Treasure matters” theme of the set, Forsworn Paladin is both a mana sink and a way to slowly, incrementally get there on your own. It needn’t buff itself, making it an interesting late-game threat, and it sort of serves as a weird bit of black ramp. It’s a capable enough attacker if called into service, as it can use its activated ability to dispatch two creatures, and menace means it can be quite a threat with enough support. It’s not flashy, but it’ll get the job done.
