Once per turn (Quick Effect): You can target 1 Fusion Monster you control; send 1 “Frightfur” card from your Deck or Extra Deck to the GY, except “Frightfur Cruel Whale”, and if you do, the targeted monster gains ATK equal to half of its original ATK until the end of this turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Frightfur Cruel Whale wraps up the Frightfur week on Pojo, a new Frightfur Fusion for the archetype.  Also, for those celebrating it, stay safe this Halloween weekend and try to enjoy it as much as possible.

Needing any Edge Imp monster works well with the new Scythe, and not requiring a specific Fluffal also lends to flexibility for easy summoning. The spot removal 1-for-1 on both sides of the field can work in your favor if used with something like Toy Vendor or something that can come back like Edge Imp Sabre. Whale can boost its attack during either players turn, giving it a chance to have some serious attack power when pushing for an OTK, or using this in the Damage Step to out one of your opponents monsters. If you don’t want the ATK boost, you can send a Frightfur spell/trap to the grave instead to thin the deck. Whale fits perfectly with the strategy of Frightfur/Fluffal: OTK, damage, damage, damage. Even though the ATK boost is half the Frightfur sent to the grave, at the least that will be a 950 boost, giving Whale an ATK of 3550. With something like Tiger clearing the way that Whale could be game over for the opponent, or Whale could push through for Tiger to claw at the opponent for the same result. You can cycle the Frightfur back with Repair as well, making it a little easier to use even on turn one.

Frightfur have some high ATK monsters, but Whale takes that high ATK, pushes it further, and can get rid of something off its Fusion Summon to boot.

The ending card of the week was probably obvious and is very fitting the day before Halloween: Frightfur Cruel Whale.

Cruel Whale is a Level 9 WATER Fiend Fusion with 2600 ATK and 2400 DEF. Stats are low for Level 9, but it makes up for that with a low cost to summon, being Fiend is also cool though DARK instead of WATER feels more fitting here even though it is a Whale. The Fusion Materials are any Edge Imp monster and any Fluffal monster, which is as generic as it gets for this archetype. Upon being Fusion Summoned, you can destroy a card on each side of the field, which is great to use on the opponent’s turn with Scythe to get the disruption as well as protect the Whale if it’s the only card you have on field. Some interesting things you could do is the obvious to pop Toy Vendor for that search or you can try some Artifacts to get to Artifact Scythe to pop that on the opponent’s turn after summoning this with Edge Imp Scythe to lock the opponent from the Extra Deck while having a disruption with this. It’s great this isn’t a once per turn effect at all, letting you summon multiple in a turn for multiple pops and having 2 Level 9s for True King of All Calamities if you desire to run it. The second effect is a soft once per turn with a Quick Effect to target any Fusion you control and dump a Frightfur card from the Deck or Extra Deck to the graveyard to boost the targeted monster’s ATK by half of its original ATK. Great for OTKs and it can setup the graveyard with Frightfur Repair we saw on Wednesday or put a Frightfur Fusion from the Extra Deck to the grave to either retrieve with Frightfur Repair or use with Frightfur Fusion to get into Frightfur Sabre-Tooth to revive a different Frightfur Fusion for massive damage. Cruel Whale helps give the archetype more pops while also giving it a higher damage output, making it another great addition to their arsenal.

Closing the week is Frightfur Cruel Whale.  Level 9, Water/Fiend, 2600 attack and 2400 defense.  Fair stats, but lower than I’d like on a Level 9.  Fusion Material is vaguely openly specific needing one each of an Edge Imp and a Fluffal Monster.  A Fusion Summon of this card allows you to destroy one card on the Field of each player.  Note this effect IS optional.  Which becomes relevant if say, this is the only card you happen to have on the Field and/or your opponent would happen to have none.  Meaning this card doesn’t have to destroy itself with its own effect, which I like.  A Quick Effect lets you send a Frightfur Monster from your Deck or Extra Deck (open versatile options are always good) to your Graveyard and the targeted Monster gains attack equal to half its original attack.  But only until the End of the current turn.  Something is better than nothing, and I realize whatever you dump will likely be eventually cycled back to you in one way or another, unless you win that turn.  So it can combo well with about anything in the Theme, but it doesn’t seem like much to get from a Fusion who himself should be stronger to begin with.

Art:  5/5  Despite the misconception, whales are usually gentle creatures.  The smile here creeps me out, as well as the metal claws on the underbelly.  Great spooky pic for Halloween eve.
