Galaxy-Eyes Afterglow Dragon – #LDS2-EN052

If you control a “Galaxy-Eyes” monster: You can Special Summon this card from your hand in Defense Position. If this card is detached from an Xyz Monster to activate that monster’s effect: You can take 1 “Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon” from your hand or Deck, and either Special Summon it, or attach it to an Xyz Monster you control as material, then if you activated this effect during the Battle Phase, double the ATK of all “Number” Xyz Monsters you control. You can only use each effect of “Galaxy-Eyes Afterglow Dragon” once per turn.

With Galaxy/Photon support likely impending, let’s take this opportunity to look back at the last card they got: Galaxy-Eyes Afterglow Dragon.

Afterglow is a Level 8 LIGHT Dragon with 3000 ATK and 2500 DEF. Great stats, great Attribute, and great Type all to give Galaxy/Photon another target for Melody of Awakening Dragon alongside Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon. First effect lets you Special Summon this from hand if you control a Galaxy-Eyes monster, which they’re all easy to get out. The Deck summons Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon pretty quickly, and most the Rank 8s you might run in the strategy are Galaxy-Eyes monsters, not to forget the Link-2 Galaxy-Eyes as well. If this card is detached from an Xyz Monster to activate that monster’s effect, you can take a Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon from your hand or Deck and either Special Summon it or attach it to an Xyz Monster you control as material, then you can double the ATK of all Number monsters you control if you did this in the Battle Phase. A really nice effect actually to help make another Rank 8 faster after using the effect of an Xyz you control that detached this. The ability to double your Number monster’s ATK is also nice to have in the Battle Phase to OTK easier since you do run a good amount of Numbers in a Galaxy/Photon Extra Deck as well, and it really makes Number 62 a powerhouse in terms of stats. Each effect is a hard once per turn, which is fine. Afterglow is a great piece of support for an archetype that can really make use of it with great ease. More Rank 8 access in Galaxy/Photon is always appreciated. It does technically help make Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon faster, but you’re still likely going for Rank 8s that just need 2 monsters. The card is highly searchable in the archetype as well, and they can recover it decently well enough to where 2 might work, but I wouldn’t fault you for wanting to run 3.

Art: 5/5 I do like the blue-white coloring here better than blue-purple on Photon Dragon.

Speaking of card linages that didn’t need another insertion, here we have Galaxy-Eyes Afterglow Dragon.  Level 8, Light/Dragon make beautiful love to each other, and BEWD atk and def make for a good start to this card.  Controlling a Galaxy Eyes Monster Special Summons this, in defense position, from your Hand.  That should all but immediately open up a Rank 8 play for you, so the defense part shouldn’t matter, but it won’t ALWAYS be the case to just Extra Deck this guy off, and you may not want/need to.  If detached for an Effect of an XYZ Monster, you can Special Summon a Galaxy Eyes Photon Dragon (the original) from your Hand or Deck, which is pretty awesome.  Free board drop of a big body Monster like that is always welcome.  Additionally, you can take that Galaxy Eyes and attach it to another XYZ you control as Material, if you desire.  Versatility is good, and you’re likely most of the time to drop it to the Field, but it’s nice to have that option.  If you did this, you then can double the attack of all Number XYZ Monsters you control.  That’s one hell of a boost, even just for the Turn, so that should be your push to win the game.  It’s almost sad the card itself does nothing for itself or really while it’s on the Field, but it’s still a nice, solid choice for Galaxy Eyes players.
