Garunix Eternity, Hyang of the Fire Kings ends the week look at the new Fire King support.

The archetype’s first Xyz monster, Garunix Eternity requires at least two Level 8 monsters to summon (your big Winged-Beasts fit the bill). Garunix Eternity carries High Avatar Garunix’s monster wipe ability upon Xyz Summon, clearing the way for a direct attack as well as setting up/activating any Fire King monster effect(s) you had on the field. Normally it isn’t wise to blow up your own monsters but this archetype thrives on it.

Spell/Trap spot removal is something this archetype hasn’t had before. 1-for-1 trade may seem slow when compared to the board wipe abilities of a few of the monsters in the archetype, but not needing to trade a FIRE monster on field/in hand can be a plus: this is generic spot removal and most archetype’s have a monster to do it. The 500ATK boost is nice but normally will not be consequential. Despite the utility of the spot removal, Garunix Eternity brings back “Fire King” monsters equal to the materials attached to it when destroyed, almost making you want to keep as many on it as possible. Since you can attach multiple materials and they don’t need to be monsters, you could use other Spell/Trap cards to attach as Xyz Materials to Garunix Eternity, however there likely wouldn’t be space for that in the deck. Echelon of the Fire Kings already can Special Summon three Fire King monsters, as well as summon one of those from the Deck. Sure, effects are negated, and they get destroyed in the End Phase, but that will set up any Standby Phase effect(s) to trigger during your next turn, as well as this card being used first to get you to materials for a three-material Garunix Eternity (providing you have one of your Level 8’s in the grave). Combo that trap previously mentioned with Fire King Sanctuary (if your opponent Special Summons after you play Echelon) and you’ve got an Xyz of this on your opponent’s turn without losing out on the monsters you summon in the End Phase.

A big Fire King monster with spot removal included into a board-wipe ability: devastation and measured pressure. Garunix Eternity can deal with Spell/Trap cards as well as clear out your opponent’s monsters, AND trigger Fire King monster effect(s). It does everything the other Fire King monsters can do and a little more: a fitting set of effects for the newest and strongest monster in the archetype. Worth noting that this card is generic as well, so if you have a few Level 8’s in your deck this card should be high on the list of Xyz Monster choices due to its generic destruction powers. Maybe should’ve made it less generic to be splashed into other decks?

We end this week off with the Xyz-era archetype finally getting an Xyz of their own: Garunix Eternity, Hyang of the Fire Kings.

Garunix Eternity is a Rank 8 FIRE Pyro Xyz with 3000 ATK and 2000 DEF. Great stats for a Rank 8, FIRE is great, and Pyro has recieved a fair amount of support recently. Materials are any 2+ Level 8 monsters, so completely generic and gives room for using more monsters if you wish. Upon being Xyz Summoned, you can destroy all other monsters on the field, which is a more reliable way to resolve something like this vs Fire King High Avatar Garunix making you wait til the next Standby Phase after being destroyed via a card effect. It’s easy to summon either on your turn or on the opponent’s thanks to Fire King Sanctuary. You can detach a material from this card to target and destroy any Spell/Trap on the field, which gives Fire Kings an in archetype form of backrow removal and less reliance on Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys. It also gains 500 ATK after destroying said Spell/Trap, so a nice boost. Finally, if it is destroyed and it had material, you can summon Fire King monsters from your graveyard up to the number of materials it had, letting you reswarm likely with some Level 8 monsters, monsters with effects you can trigger, or you can just revive this for the 3000 ATK if you wish. Hard once per turn on each effect, of course. Garunix Eternity is a solid addition to the Fire King archetype, which never really needed an Extra Deck before all this FIRE support, but now can make use of it, with this being a great addition to it. You certainly play it, just the number is up to you since that Extra Deck space is always tight, especially as we get Promethian Princess for FIRE combos later on.

All of this leads up to the new boss of the Fire King archetype, Garunix Eternity, Hyang of the Fire Kings, yet another form of Garunix to round out the week. Garunix Eternity is a Rank 8 FIRE Pyro Xyz monster, and while being FIRE is on-brand, being Pyro is a little odd. It’ll take any two or more level 8 monsters, which is not too hard considering Sacred Fire King Garunix and Fire King High Avatar Kirin are both fairly easy to summon. It also packs a solid 3000 attack, though its defense stat of 2000 is somewhat lacking.

Just like Legendary Fire King Ponix, Garunix Eternity has three hard once per turn effects. Its first effect, your primary disruption, triggers when it’s Xyz Summoned, destroying all other monsters on the field. Triggering this on your opponent’s turn is easy with Fire King Sanctuary, as it lets you Xyz Summon if your opponent Special Summons a monster, effectively guaranteeing that you blow up at least one monster. Garunix Eternity’s second effect lets you detach one Xyz material to target and destroy any Spell or Trap on the field, then grants Garunix itself 500 attack. Getting rid of your opponent’s backrow is nice, and I assume you’re supposed to use it to destroy your own Fire King Island to destroy Garunix and trigger its third effect, which lets you revive a Fire King monster from your Graveyard for each Xyz material Garunix had when it was destroyed. This effect includes itself, too, so if Garunix Eternity still had its two Xyz materials when it was destroyed (IE, from Island’s ignition effect), you can revive Eternity and Kirin then summon a Sacred Garunix you can search off of Island, which will easily secure an OTK against an empty board. Garunix Eternity is a gold standard for a good and balanced boss monster; while it doesn’t have protection or an inherent disruption, it works well with its own deck. Most opt to run only one copy since it revives itself and you want to save space for Link monsters, but I like running two for the security of it being banished.

+Powerful disruption and sets up follow-up and extenders
-Can be a little slow to summon because of Sanctuary’s limits
