Each time a “Six Samurai” monster(s) is Normal or Special Summoned, place 2 Bushido Counters on this card. You can remove Bushido Counters from your field to activate these effects.
● 2 Counters: Target 1 “Six Samurai” or “Shien” Effect Monster; that target gains 500 ATK until the end of this turn.
● 4 Counters: Add 1 “Six Samurai” monster from your Deck or GY to your hand.
● 6 Counters: Target 1 “Shien” Effect Monster in your GY; Special Summon that target.

Gateway of the Six HAS to become at least two…the OCG has it at three!

The boss card for Six Samurai, they just aren’t the same deck with it only at one. Yes, tomorrow’s card can search Gateway upon Link Summoning, but not forcing them to commit resources to that instead of maybe a Naturia Beast would be preferable. What can be said about Gateway that hasn’t already been said? The card is broken for Six Samurai. Turn one, it means death if your opponent can’t stop it. The only thing holding it back are the ways you have to put counters on it. The card is dependent on your ability to put counters on it continuously. Looping the second effect with Kizan over and over is standard. Back in the day I would get my search off making Beast with Elder and Kagemusha. Rarely will the ATK boost come into play or the Shien search, especially when you can use the second effect until you run out of counters ON THE FIELD. Not just on this card, but the entire field. If you have Dojo or tomorrows card, you may be making a five minute play with Gateway. The card is a small ATK boost, RoTA for any Six Samurai, and one of the better Continuous Spell cards in the game.

Don’t care if it can be broken, don’t care if having two filling up with counters would be insane, the card is at 3 in the OCG and you hear nothing about Six Samurai…just like Blackwings at full power in the TCG and…nope, nothing.

Today’s card tells you tomorrow’s card with little subtlety, here’s Gateway of the Six.

Gateway of the Six is a Continuous Spell that gains 2 Bushido Counters every time your Normal or Special Summon a Six Samurai. Funny how this was made before the Legendary Six Samurai when the archetype didn’t have as much spam power outside of Grandmaster, but after the Legendary Six Samurai and later the Secret Six Samurai, you could get counters on this like no tomorrow, which gets insane when you look at the effects it has to remove counters with none being a once per turn and you can remove Bushido Counters from any card, not just Gateway. Removing 2 counters lets a Six Samurai or Shien Effect Monster gain 500 ATK until the end of the turn. You can keep boosting the same monster as well if you need to make sure your monster is stronger than the opponent’s, which is nice when you consider Six Samurai almost always had an issue getting rid of bigger monsters. Removing 4 counters lets you add a Six Samurai monster from the Deck or grave to your hand, and that doesn’t beg for loops at all (obvious sarcasm is obvious). In all seriousness, this let the archetype have a turn almost as long as they needed to in order to get the resources needed to summon whatever Extra Deck monsters they needed or to potentially even FTK you with something like Cannon Soldier or Ghostrick Angel of Mischief (don’t ask about the latter). That is some insane searching for an archetype that can create infinite counters on this card. Removing 6 counters lets you target a Shien Effect Monster in your grave and Special Summon it. It’d probably be more relevant if Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En didn’t have that space, but it does and I don’t know if any other Shiens are being played outside the occasional Great Shogun Shien. This card is insane for the Six Samurai archetype and I can’t really blame the TCG for making this a TCG exclusive since it was well over a year before the Legendary Six Samurai became a thing that made this ban worthy for a time. Now we have 1, OCG has 3, and you don’t go without it in Six Samurai.

Throwback Thursday gives us Gateway of the Six.  This has been reviewed twice in the past, back in 2009 and 2010, all of about 2.5 months apart (links below):  Despite my near Cal Ripken like streak of reviews over the near past 15 years, I missed both of these, so this is a first for me.

This is one of those Continuous Magic cards that acts like a Field one, but I digress.  You get 2 Bushido Counters each time a Six Samurai Monster is Normal OR Special Summoned (and not just yours either, if you happen to be playing against them as well) and you get varying effects depending on the number of Counters you choose to remove from this card:

2:  Target a Six Samurai of Shien Effect Monster that gains 500 attack until the End of the turn.  500 attack isn’t a LOT, but it’s not nothing.  It seems like a bit much to give up for what you get in return, however.

4:  Cycles a Six Samurai Monster from your Deck or Graveyard to your Hand.  A free resource, considering I’m not counting the counters as a resource, for any Monster from your Deck or Graveyard is fantastic.  No limitation or restriction as to Type or Level or anything like that either.

6:  Special Summon a Shien Effect Monster (Targeted of course) from your Graveyard.  Great Shogun Shien?  I like this, specific as it is.  And the real gem of this card, of course, is the insane ease of how quickly you can generate these counters.  It’s very fast, as are the Monsters and this Deck, so there’s no reason not to play it if you’re playing Six Samurai.

Art:  5/5  Now THIS is really cool.  Six Samurai art is always amazing.  It is a door, so I guess we can call that a gateway, but I’m not sure why that circle on the gate is emitting all that light.
