Georgius, Swordman of the Ice Barrier – #BLTR-EN006

While you control another “Ice Barrier” monster, your opponent cannot activate the effects of monsters in the GY. You can only use each of the following effects of “Georgius, Swordman of the Ice Barrier” once per turn. If you control an “Ice Barrier” monster: You can Special Summon this card from your hand in Defense Position. If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can Special Summon 1 Level 5 or lower “Ice Barrier” monster from your hand or GY.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Georgius, Swordman of the Ice Barrier, like Moon Mage yesterday, are the kind of monsters the archetype have sorely needed.

Level 6 Winged Beast (most of the Ice Barrier archetype are different Types) but with a Special Summon ability if you control another Ice Barrier monster. Yes, he gets Special Summoned in defense and with 1200DEF he isn’t going to be surviving most attacks, but lets be honest, 2000ATK isn’t going to do too much either unless you are rushing smaller monsters your opponent left out on the field. Georgius is meant to Special Summon another Level 5 or lower Ice Barrier off his Normal or Special Summon: he is your fuel additive to the fire.

Moon Mage and Georgius are a great combo. Moon Mage pops the monster Georgius summoned from the hand or graveyard for Moon Mage to pop to get three tokens. If you do that, you’ve got a Level 5 Moon Mage, Level 6 Georgius, and three Level 1 tokens: 14 Levels on the field can make any Synchro WATER monster in the game (that doesn’t have restrictions). On top of that, Georgius is a Tuner himself, making him an ample teammate of Moon Mage to make two Synchro Summons using themselves and the tokens. Add in Speaker of the Ice Barrier being able to Special Summon herself easily and you’ve got even more options for those two for Synchro Summoning.

A Special Summon ability that is easy to come by in the archetype, Special Summons an Ice Barrier from the hand/graveyard, and has a high Level while being a Tuner, Georgius has a lot going on for him. His low stats and being forced into defense are meant to balance out the fact that you are going to be Synchro Summoning using him and giving him typical Level 6 stats and the ability to attack upon summon would make him “unfair”.

We double up on Tuners this week as Ice Barrier got a second one with this wave of support: Georgius, Swordman of the Ice Barrrier.

Georgius is a Level 6 WATER Winged Beast Tuner with 2000 ATK and 1200 DEF. Stats are whatever on a Level 6, but WATER is good, though Winged Beast feels odd here. While you control another Ice Barrier monster, your opponent cannot activate the effects of monsters in the graveyard, so yet another floodgate for Ice Barrier. Shutting off graveyard effects can be pretty potent in 2024 as we keep getting more and more monsters that trigger their effects in the graveyard. The remaining effects are each a hard once per turn effect, first being a Special Summon effect from the hand if you control another Ice Barrier monster, which we’re thankful is here since otherwise we are dealing with a Level 6 monster. It’s summoned in Defense Position, but chance might be you’ll use it for a Synchro Summon. Upon Normal or Special Summon, you can summon any Level 5 or lower Ice Barrier from your hand or graveyard, giving you some extension and recovery if summoning from the grave. This should really help Ice Barriers make their new big Synchro. It’s a solid card for the Deck, giving it another floodgate option while also being a free Special Summon from the hand and also summoning another body on summon. Numbers might vary on this, it’s a Level 6 that summons itself once a turn, but it’s pretty searchable. Still a staple for the Deck, maybe 2-3 can work.

Following up on Mirror Mage is Georgius, Swordman (sic) of the Ice Barrier, this time a level 6 WATER Winged Beast Tuner monster. A spiritual successor to its Mist Valley counterpart, Georgius is accessible with Medallion of the Ice Barrier, Revealer of the Ice Barrier, and Mirror Mage of the Ice Barrier. Like Mist Valley Falcon, it has 2000 attack and 1200 defense, a stat spread that would’ve been nice on a (terrible) level 4, though they’re a bit underwhelming for a level 6 monster, especially one that’ll stay on the field– more on that later.

While Georgius and another Ice Barrier monster are on your field, your opponent can’t activate monster effects in the Graveyard, essentially making it a more permanent but limited Abyss Dweller. It’s not as strong as you would think, but it’s still a fairly strong effect for this meta; it’ll stop the Graveyard effects of Lo, the Prayers of the Voiceless Voice and Fiendsmith Engraver, among other things. It won’t stop Snake-Eye combos proper, but it can prevent Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames from activating. Georgius has two other effects, both of them hard once per turn, the first letting you Special Summon it from your hand in Defense position as long as you control an Ice Barrier monster. Being able to field it without tributes is the bare minimum, so while it is nice, it’s still a potential brick, and opening two of them will always feel terrible. Georgius’s last effect triggers if it’s Normal or Special Summoned to Special Summon any level 5 or lower Ice Barrier monster from your hand or Graveyard. This effect is great for extending, though it’s mostly to let you double dip on its primary purpose: to be summoned by Ice Barrier’s new boss monster! You’ll generally bring it out during your opponent’s turn for the floodgate, potentially reviving any useful Ice Barriers as well for another floodgate or as follow-up. The extending effects are still great, however, so I can see two copies being justifiable. I don’t recommend playing three unless you like building houses.

+Great effects for extending and can be weaved into combo lines
+Floodgate has good general usage against the meta
-Mediocre stats make it susceptible to being destroyed by battle
-High level brick that relies on fielding an Ice Barrier first

Art: 4/5 Not sure why Mist Valley Falcon decided to become an Ice Barrier, but he looks better in blue anyway. Also, I know “Swordman” is technically a real word, but…
