This card was 2nd on my Top 10 cards of 2021 list.

With its great, big, long wings and its long and swishy tail, Goldspan Dragon cut a rather impressive swath through the entire year. It might not have protection on its own, but it can actually make protection easier with its treasure generation; it’s way easier to thwart attempts to kill Mister Biggles if you have two mana open to do it! It’s an aggressive clock on its own that especially speeds up the rest of your board by doubling the value of treasures, and it actually has been played rather liberally alongside Alrund’s Epiphany as another means to help get the game closed out and the extra turn engine rolling. It’s deceptively good at helping protect itself, which puts it a cut above other curve-toppers, and Goldspan Dragon has helped to underscore all year that swooping is, has been, and always will be bad.

Constructed: 5 (it’s easily been the best creature in Standard all year)
Casual: 5
Limited: 5
Multiplayer: 4
Commander: 4.75

Goldspan Dragon

One of the best cards printed in 2021 and one of the best dragons printed OF ALL TIME! Treasure tokens have become insanely popular and have become an integral part of several strategies in multiple formats so a card like Goldspan Dragon only enhances treasure token use and popularity. Pair this with Galazeth Prismari and you have treasure tokens that do not sacrifice and you keep getting them every time Goldspan Dragon attacks. To be rewarded when your opponent Terminates, Doom Blades, or double Lightning Bolts is just amazing in the world of Magic the Gathering. It wouldn’t hurt to pick up a playset for multiple decks to just have in the future, I doubt it’ll be reprinted for a long time!

It was said that dragon-fire could melt and destroy the Rings of Power. But why would you want to destroy shiny treasures, when you could use them to cast your big, splashy cards? Goldspan Dragon is obviously a very powerful card – it shines through even on your very first reading, and the possibilities just multiply the more cards you put alongside him. That rate of Treasure production is just as good for ramping, casting multiple spells, upping your artifact count for whatever cares about that, and fuelling cards like Glimmer Bairn or Woodland Champion. This card has something for everyone. It’s a home run in every way I can think of.
