Hello Pojo Fans,

Gouki Thunder Ogre gets into the big Gouki monsters and the reasons why I’m reviewing them this week.

Two or more Gouki monsters isn’t hard to come by in this deck. Link 3, 2200 is like Tri-Gate, so the stats are alright. The 400ATK gain isn’t much, but it is permanent, so you could beef up Thunder Orge depending on your play style. The additional Normal Summon to a zone this points too applies to both players, and is quite the wrinkle. You never want to give your opponent another Normal Summon, that is an instant Link 2, and with one of the arrows pointing to the opponent you will be doing just that. Yes, you get an additional Normal Summon because you have 2 zones for yourself if this is in your Main Monster Zone, but you’d better be certain you can handle whatever that extra Normal Summon they may get will bring.

Yay Link Monsters! Gouki Thunder Ogre is a Link 3 Earth Warrior-type Link Monster with 2200 Atk and Up, Bottom Left, and Bottom Right Arrows. You need 2 or more Gouki monsters to properly Link Summon this guy and the arrows are only useful in the Extra Monster Zone, so don’t like Special Summon him from the grave or something. 2200 Atk is decent and the other stats fit the theme, but he is definitely not versatile because of the summoning restriction. Anyway, if something Thunder Ogre points to is destroyed by battle or card effect you can make him gain 400 Atk. You don’t have to but the gain would be permanent if he stays on the field. The second effect also depends on his Linked Zones. Either player can Normal Summon or Set to a zone he points to in addition to the regular one. Again, useless in the Main Monster Zone, but excellent for Gouki decks. Just gain a Normal Summon and Link climb to something that won’t give your opponent advantage. Definitely worth running in the Extra Deck, but not versatile or strong enough to be great.

It’s time to look at the Gouki Link Monsters. It isn’t the most popular way of playing the deck, but it is still a solid way of playing it for fun, the first Link we look at for Gouki is Thunder Ogre.

Thunder Ogre is a Link-3 EARTH Warrior with 2200 ATK and arrows pointing Up, Bottom Left, and Bottom Right. 2200 ATK is fine on a Link-3 even though I’ve seen better, arrows are some of the best you can have even though I’d prefer that arrow pointing Up be going to the side instead if not Down, and EARTH Warrior is a good type/attribute combination. The summoning requirements are 2+ Gouki monsters, which is easy to obtain with cards like Suprex, Headbat, and Rematch and it helps that Goukis have a few Link-2s to their name. If a monster this card points to is destroyed by battle, it gains 400 ATK, so it gets a nice boost to 2600 with one destruction and over time it’ll get more respectable as more monsters it points to are destroyed. The turn player can apply the following effects while this monster is on the field: during their Main Phase, they can Normal Summon 1 monster to a zone this card points to in addition to their Normal Summon/Set (you can only gain this effect once per turn). This helps get you from your Gouki Link-3s into your Gouki Link-4s fairly quickly or help get you another Link-2. You’ll likely want to Link this away into a Link-4 though because this can give your opponent an additional Normal Summon as well since it does point to their side of the field. It has that clause to make sure you aren’t using this with other cards that grant additional Normal Summons like Double Summon or Gem-Knight Seraphinite. Thunder Ogre is simply meant to get you to the Link-4s with greater ease, while the Goukis you are summoning are likely searching when being used as Link Material. Thunder Ogre is a must if you are putting Goukis in your Extra Deck.

Now we’ll look at some Link Monsters for the rest of the week, and the first one up is Gouki Thunder Ogre.  We have a Link 3 Monster, requiring 2+ Gouki Monsters for a Link Summon.  Arrows point directly above and to the bottom respective diagonals.  Still an Earth, Warrior type Monster, who has 2200 attack…could do better, could do worse on a Link 3.

This is a simple enough card, but a useful one.  When a Monster (or Monsters) is (are) destroyed by Battle OR Effect, this card gains 400 attack.  All of a sudden 2600 attack looks much better than that 2200, and we see why it had to start out a bit lower.  The effect is cumulative, so if it stays on the Field, it can easily obtain and break 3000 attack as well.

The second effect is fun too.  The turn player can Summon a Monster to a zone one of this cards arrows point to.  Said Summon is a Normal Summon, which is fine, and you won’t always be able to use this effect anyway (and you likely don’t want your opponent to do so) but it won’t necessarily hurt if it does, especially if you keep the top arrow open.  Appropriately, it’s an additional Summon, so it’s once per turn.  He’s fun, he can be VERY powerful, and good for the theme.

Rating:  3.75/5

Art:  4.5/5  All that armor and the suit makes me feel he could be a Hero.  The Lightning, if not a bit pedantic, is cool, and that blaster is also charged with thunder it seems.
