Re: 3 Player HPTCG
Our group also has found enjoyment in playing games with more than 2 players
(not just limited to three). However we have a few particular rules, so
I'll lay it all out here:
1. Basis
The same turn sequence is kept (moving around the table clockwise), so
mechanically player play just like they always do, except for the other
details listed here.
2. Adventures
The reason WotC made sure each player could only play one adventure at a
time is that way, no player was hit by two adventures at the same time.
Therefore, we adjusted the rules so each player may only be affected by one
adventure at a time, the difference is that a player may affect each of his
opponents with different adventures (assuming no one else hit each other
with adventures). This prevents horrible locks we found if each player
could play one adventure, but target someone who already has it. Each
player is targeted individually, making playing them more dangerous (unless,
of course, you are a Weasley).
3. Creatures
Each creature chooses and opponent to go to each turn, and thus, you
may split up you creatures to do damage ("Fluffy eats Bob for 12, while the
three wolves feast of Joe for 9"). Invididual effects (such as Mrs. Norris)
affect only one person a turn (but that may be changed each turn when damage
is normally done) [that darn cat can only follow around 1 person at a time].
4. Effects only work against specified opponents.
In the case of Dungbomb, Wingardium Leviosa, etc, these effects target
only one person, and only protects the user. For instance. If player 1
plays Dungbomb targetting player 2, player 2's beast won't go after player
1, but they will love to chomp player 3. This makes such cards good for
causing opponents to fights, but dead weight if opponents aren't carrying
creatures. NOTE: Shrinking Potion, since it hides the spellcaster, work
against both opponents, and thus is very powerful with these rules.
5. Matches
Matches are between 2 people only, so legally 3 matches can be in play
at a time in a 3 player game (1 v 2, 2 v 3, 1 v 3). Note, you can only
challenge opponent's to matches, not cause two other players to play
(Hufflepuff Match caused this rule).
6. Locations
Only one location can be in play at a time between the 3 players, so
those cards are less powerful as they leave play quickly.
That's about it. Try it out and let me know how it goes!
